How to Prevet Egie Failure! WHY ENGINES FAIL BEST WAYS TO PREVENT FAILURE Bearig failure due to improper prelubricatio. Use the coveiet aerosol preluber that comes with your egie. Follow istructios o Page 4. Improper breaki ad ot usig oil with a zic additive for flat tappet cams. Note: Zic additive ot required for egies with roller cams. For flat tappet cams, we require you use oil cotaiig zic or a zic additive durig breaki. Follow istructios o Page 5. Wrog tueup specificatios Follow istructios ad use recommeded specificatios for correct timig o Page 5. Overheatig Always istall a ew thermostat with a bypass hole for your egie. Leakig exhaust maifold gasket from iadequate torque o maifold bolts (liste for tickig). Always retorque maifold bolts after a heat cycle to esure proper seal. If usig aftermarket headers, cotact the maufacturer for proper gaskets. Poorly cleaed addo parts that result i premature bearig failure. Clea all addo parts professioally to prevet abrasives from gettig i oil. Never use abrasive sadig discs or blastig media to clea parts. Leakig itake maifold ad itake vacuum (oil cosumptio). Follow the istructios that came with your itake maifold gasket for proper istallatio. Excess vibratio from improperly istalled or icorrect flexplate ad/or harmoic balacer. Refer to your egie specificatios at NOTE: Your BluePrit egie is a highperformace egie with a aggressive cam profile. It is ormal for your BluePrit egie to soud differet tha a regular stock egie. 3

To preserve your warraty ad esure years of troublefree performace, it is critical that you follow the procedures i this istallatio guide StartUp & Iitial BreakI STAGE ONE Parts Ivetory: Check egie parts ad addo recommedatios/specs Your egie has bee assembled with select parts based o the egie cofiguratio you ordered. Prior to istallatio, check to be sure your egie arrived with the parts you ordered (base, base dressed or fully dressed). Now determie the addo parts you eed to complete your istallatio. The parts list ad addo recommedatios ad specificatios for your egie are available at uder Egie Istallatio. Depedig o the egie you ordered, addo recommedatios ad related specificatios may iclude the harmoic balacer, flexplate/flywheel, spark plugs, ad spark plug gap. STAGE TWO Egie Assembly: Assemble all you ca before istallatio We recommed completig as much assembly of your egie as possible prior to istallatio, such as the igitio system, fuel system, water pump, balacer ad pulleys, flywheel or flexplate ad egie mouts. STAGE THREE PreLubricatio: Use our aerosol preluber for excellet results Your egie cotais o oil ad must be prelubricated before startup. To prelube your egie, we require you use the aerosol preluber that came with your egie. It s fast, easy to use, ad provides excellet results. 1. Fill the crakcase & oil filter with the recommeded oil ad amout, based o the type of cam your egie has: a. For egies with flat tappet cams: Use a O.E. recommeded or API SN servicerated multiviscosity (osythetic) oil cotaiig zic or use a zic additive for cam breaki. Commo breaki oils with high zic cotet are: Torco ZEP Zic Ehaced Egie Protector, ZDDPlus, GM EOS, Joe Gibbs BreakI Oil, ad Lucas #10063 BreakI Additive. b. For egies with roller cams: Oil cotaiig zic or a zic additive is ot required. Use a O.E. recommeded or API SN servicerated multiviscosity (osythetic) oil. 2. With the distributor i the egie, istall the lie of the aerosol preluber supplied with the egie followig the directios o the ca. Empty the cotets of the preluber ito the egie while rotatig the crakshaft by had i a clockwise directio from the frot to esure oil flows to the valve trai area. 4 STAGE FOUR Coolig System: Add coolat ad istall ew thermostat Coolat: We recommed you use a quality ame brad extededlife coolat. Check the label of the brad you choose to esure the compatibility of the coolat with your egie metals (cast iro, or cast iro ad alumium) ad radiator material. Use a 50/50 mix of atifreeze ad distilled water to fill the radiator ad egie. Fill the egie with the thermostat housig removed to help prevet air pockets from developig i the coolig system. Thermostat: Istall a ew performace thermostat equipped with a bypass hole, such as a Stat Super Stat or similar brad. As a geeral rule, we recommed a thermostat that will keep your coolig system i the 180 to 190 F rage. Fuel Requiremets: Use premium gasolie or a gas/ethaol bled We recommed you use a premium gasolie with a miimum octae ratig of 91 for your high performace egie. Fuel requiremets may vary for egie types. For more iformatio o egie fuels, go to Egie Istallatio at. SAFETY FIRST: Before startig your egie, be sure to set the emergecy brake if the vehicle is o the groud, chock the wheels, ad make sure the vehicle caot slip ito gear. For the startup ad iitial breaki process, total timig was set at the factory if your egie was ordered with a distributor. If your egie was ot ordered with a distributor, total timig should be adjusted to 22 to 24 at 2,000 rpm to reduce excessive heat or load durig breaki. If the distributor is removed durig istallatio, total timig must be reset. Total timig set at the factory will also eed to be verified. For egies with flat tappet cams: Start the egie ad brig it to 2,000 RPM. Get the egie ruig smoothly. The vary the egie speed from 1,8002,200 RPM i a slow acceleratio/deceleratio cycle for 30 miutes. This is ecessary to provide adequate oil splash ad lifter rotatio to properly mate each lifter to its lobe. While the egie is ruig, be sure to check oil pressure ad coolat temperature, ad check for fluid leaks, such as oil, trasmissio fluid, fuel, ad coolat/atifreeze. Also liste for ay uusual souds. Should you hear a uusual soud, shut the egie off ad check for the source. Oce resolved, restart the egie, brig its speed immediately to 2,000 RPM, ad resume the acceleratio/ deceleratio cycle for a total ru time of 30 miutes. For egies with roller cams: Roller cams do ot require a breaki period. Start your egie. Brig it to 2,000 RPM ad get it ruig smoothly. While the egie is ruig, be sure to check oil pressure ad coolat temperature, ad check for fluid leaks, such as oil, trasmissio fluid, fuel, ad coolat/atifreeze. Also liste for ay uusual souds. Should you hear a uusual soud, shut the egie off, check for the source, ad correct it. STAGE FIVE Egie Timig After startup ad the iitial breaki period, verify the egie s iitial timig (1016 ) ad total timig (3234 ) ad adjust if ecessary. For computercotrolled egies, the timig istructios set with the egie must be followed. If additioal assistace is required cotact a performace techicia at BluePrit Egies at CAUTION: Improper timig ca lead to abormal combustio ad/or detoatio. Neither coditio is covered uder warraty. No exceptios. Settig timig by the total timig method: Total timig of 32 to 34 must be set first, ad this will determie iitial timig. For accurate results, we recommed usig a timig light without a builti advace. Failure to set the recommeded total timig will result i egie damage ot covered by your warraty. If your egie was ordered with a distributor, the total timig was set at the factory, but it must be verified durig istallatio. If it was ordered without a distributor or the distributor had to be removed durig istallatio, total timig must be set or reset. Some egies are ordered with a harmoic balacer. If your egie was ot, we recommed usig a harmoic balacer with the degrees marked o it (typically from 0 to 60 ). Start by usig a pait stick, chalk or other marker to mark a lie o the 34 mark. Whe checkig total timig, this mark will lie up with the zero o your timig poiter whe total advace is obtaied with egie at 3,500 RPM. 4 Now set your timig: 5 1. Hook timig light to the umber oe spark plug wire ad brig the egie up to 3,500 RPM. 2. At 3,500 RPM, tur the distributor to alig the 34 mark o the balacer with the 0 mark o the timig poiter, ad lock dow the distributor. 3. Let the egie idle dow ad the brig the RPM back up to verify the distributor is still set at 32 to 34 total advace. If eeded, loose ad adjust agai. 4. After total advace of 32 to 34 is set, let the egie idle dow agai ad recheck the iitial timig. If iitial timig (advace at idle) is betwee 10 ad 16, the vacuum lie ca be hooked up ad the idle adjusted. The total advace settig is ow complete. CAUTION: If the iitial timig is ot betwee 10 ad 16, cotact a techicia at BluePrit Egies for assistace ( ) or have total advace verified by a shop. NOTE: Keep a record of the iitial timig for later referece. This will allow the timig to be set agai if eeded without verifyig the total advace. The iitial breaki process is complete. Your egie is ow ready for the road ad its 500mile breaki. 5

4 ENGINE INSTALLATION 6 7 Dyo Testig STAGE SIX Dyo Tested for Performace Five Hudred Mile BreakI NOTE: Do NOT use sythetic oil durig the breaki period!!! After 6,000 miles, sythetic oils ca be used i your egie. For your egie s first 500 miles, avoid hard acceleratio for sustaied periods. Periodically chage the egie speed while drivig to help seat the rigs. After the first 500 miles, chage the oil ad the oil filter. For flat tappet cam egies, we recommed the cotiued use of oil with zic or a zic additive for the life of your egie. To test your egie, we ra it up to correct operatig temperature before checkig the oil pressure readigs, settig the timig, ad adjustig the carburetor. We the made multiple pulls o the dyamometer to determie ad record the torque ad horsepower readigs over a rage of RPM readigs ad to esure your egie met or exceeded its desig specificatios. The crakcase was the draied ad your egie was approved ad prepared for shippig. STAGE SEVEN Warraty Registratio: Register your egie olie To activate your BluePrit Egies Limited Warraty, go to ad complete the registratio form as soo as your egie is istalled. Maiteace Do NOT use sythetic oil durig the breaki period!! After 6,000 miles, sythetic oils ca be used i your egie. 10 to 1 Compressio Ratio Torque Horsepower Show us your muscle! STAGE EIGHT 420 HP & 450 ft/lbs 500 CAUTION: Your egie s assembly lube was washed away durig dyo testig. Be sure to PRELUBE YOUR ENGINE before startup/breaki. Failure to do so will void your warraty. NOTE: With proper istallatio, breaki ad maiteace, you ca look forward to years of troublefree performace. Be sure to register your warraty at! 8 Your BluePrit egie has bee dyo tested to cofirm its readiess to deliver maximum horsepower ad torque as desiged. For braggig rights, we have icluded your dyo sheet with actual results from your egie. Durig the breaki period, check all fluid levels frequetly. I colder regios, lower viscosity oil may be required for better flow characteristics. Use premium gasolie as recommeded for your egie at uder Egie Istallatio. Chage the oil ad oil filter every 3,000 miles. If your egie is used i a heavy duty or dusty eviromet, the oil ad oil/air filters should be chaged more frequetly.
