Here s what we do to make the SmithBlair TaperSeal Service Saddle exceptionally corrosion resistant: First, we shotblast the tough ductile iron saddle body down to bare metal; Next, we preheat the saddle; Then, we apply a heavy impact and corrosion resistant SmithBlair fusion bonded FlexiCoat epoxy coating; Next, we add job proven, selfenergizing Taper Seal gaskets and wide type 0 Stainless Steel Straps; Finally, we finish it off with type 0 Stainless Steel Bolts, Nuts and Washers. The same superior sealing and pipe supporting stability on the pipe, and the same easy installation qualities you have come to know and expect from the SmithBlair TaperSeal Service Saddles, are unchanged in the new corrosion protected saddles. Superior Sealing Qualities SmithBlair TaperSeal Service Saddles hold high pressure with just a few foot pounds of torque applied to the strap nuts. The unique, pressureenergized, TaperSeal gasket seals as a result of both mechanical and hydrostatic pressures and is held in position in a uniquely designed gasket cavity to provide optimum sealing efficiency. In laboratory testing, TaperSeal gaskets have been able to withstand pressures in excess of the working pressure of the pipe. When properly sized from the factory, SmithBlair TaperSeal Saddles meet the requirements listed in the UniBell PVC Pipe Association s Handbook of PVC Pipe and in the AWWA s Manual M: PVC Pipe Design and Installation. Nearly Full Pipe Support When installed on a pipe with an near the top of a saddle s range, the saddle body wraps around approximately 0 of the pipe. When installed on a pipe near the bottom of the saddle s range, the saddle wraps around approximately 0 of the pipe. As the strap bolts are tightened, tangential pull directs mechanical forces toward and around the pipe, uniformly distributing pressure around its circumference, supporting it and reinforcing it without a crushing action. Stability on the Pipe The wide skirt on SmithBlair TaperSeal Service Saddle bodies, combined with their wide wraparound stainless steel straps, provides excellent stability on the pipe. These two features work together to prevent the saddle from rocking or creeping on the pipe, which could be caused by vibration, pressure or excessive external loading. Easy to Install SmithBlair TaperSeal Service Saddles are designed for fast, easy installation. They feature a closed lug on one side of the saddle, which acts as a hinge and holds the bolt, nut and washer in place. The other side features an open canted lug, where the other bolt, nut and washer can be slipped, without disassembly. Thus, no loose parts get lost. In addition to their primary use for tapping pipe, the saddles may also be used to install air and vacuum valves, pitot tubes, or other equipment. 5 Service Saddles General Information. Initial tightening confines the TaperSeal gasket in the gasket cavity. During continued tightening, the canted ears on the saddle body and angular shape of the bales cause a tangential pull that forms the body casting to the pipe, directing mechanical forces toward and around the pipe to support and reinforce it. If the saddle body is not initially loose on the pipe, it should be spread before installation.. Tightening is complete when the saddle body conforms to the pipe. No additional benefit results from overtightening the saddle.. Service Saddle gaskets are glued in for convenience in handling. The glue does not improve the performance of the saddle. Should the gasket come loose, simply position it in the saddle body and continue with installation.. It is a good practice to screw the corporation stop, or other fitting being used, into the service saddle before mounting the saddle on the pipe. Doing so protects the threads from damage or distortion during installation and verifies that the fitting is the correct size and thread type.. Service saddles should be initially placed, as near as possible to their exact final location on the pipe. Excessive moving of the saddle on the pipe could damage the rubber gasket.. There are two types of threads coonly furnished on service saddles in the United States and Canada; a standard pipe thread and a special waterworks thread developed for service connections that have a steeper taper than the standard pipe thread.
