3 Company profile PERCY LANE PRODUCTS E S T A B L I S H E D I N Percy Lane Products was founded 22 June 1932 by Captain Percy Lane with the intention of providing windows, windscreens and louvers for all classes of mechanically propelled vehicles and caravans. This tradition remains true to this date, although both the industry base and the product range have expanded through ongoing development and competitor acquisition. PLP s core business remains the manufacture of aluminium frames. Our proprietary window and door systems are engineered to create bespoke products for individual customer needs. 4 Manual doors PLP manual doors can be used in many varying applications such as emergency exit locations or as a simple hinged door. One of the most significant features of the product is a cassette outer frame designed to significantly reduce door installation time compared to a standalone door leaf. The inner frame is pre-hung to the cassette outer frame at the PLP factory, resulting in installation to the vehicle taking only a few minutes. The hinges that mount the door leaf to the cassette outer frame are purpose designed and fully adjustable to accommodate build tolerances and are easily maintained on the vehicle. The base construction of the door leaf is purpose designed aluminium profiles, fully welded to create a rigid structure either flat, cranked or profiled to match the vehicle body condition. Traditionally the internal and external skins of the door leaf are aluminium sheet bonded to the framework using a structural adhesive and are thus ready for painting on the vehicle. Alternatively moulded and/or decorative panels can be accommodated if bespoke styling is required. Glazing can be either single or double glazed assuming a vision panel is required, either bonded or gasket mounted depending upon choice of aesthetics and preferred maintenance procedure. Alternatively a PLP sliding window can be pre-fitted if the door application dictates such. Significantly, PLP manual doors are assembled with PLP locking gear which is of a robust design providing reliability and long life. The locking gear has an external handle with the word PULL cast into the body, together with an internal lock case housing the tongue mechanism plus optional internal rod and rotating handle. Subject to the overall dimensions of the door and/or the shape of the aperture, PLP may recommend a two point lock arrangement thus ensuring against water and noise ingress. Customer choice dictates the finish of the locking mechanism, black powder coat or silver chrome plus key locking or non-locking handle. 5 Rear double doors Cassette outer frame concept for reduced installation time The rear double door concept is an enhancement of the manual door in that it uses all of the same core features but adapted to a double door arrangement. The rear double door design also utilises the cassette concept in that the two leaves are mounted to a cassette outer frame at the PLP factory, creating the major benefit of significantly reduced installation time on the vehicle. The rear double doors are also supplied with the robust PLP locking mechanism thus ensuring longevity of life and is available as either an exterior pull or rotating handle arrangement on the master leaf. Each door also has a hold back facility purpose mounted to retain the door leaves in the fully open position, ensuring there are no obstructions to gaining access to the vehicle through the door aperture. PLP s experienced team of engineers work closely with the vehicle builder throughout the design phase of a new project to ensure that the correct glazing position is achieved on each door leaf so that the vehicle lights/indicators remain visible even when the doors are in the open position (visible through the glazing). 6 Drivers assault protection door Construction The PLP assault door has become the UK industry standard aimed at providing the driver with a level of protection at affordable prices and with the ability to bespoke the design configuration to suit individual needs. Modular in construction, the door can have either a sliding pane (lifting, dropping or rotating) or a fully fixed panel without the option of opening. Where heavy 9.5mm laminated glass is required the opening pane is attached to torso balances located within the framework providing assistance to the user. Usually manufactured in polycarbonate material, the screen can be flat or shaped to suit the vehicle interface with suitable fixing brackets/rails mounted to the edges for secure fixing. 7 Locker doors PLP locker doors have varying applications such as mainstream coach luggage panels or equipment locker doors housing batteries etc. Typically the mainstream coach pro d u c t incorporates not only the hinged panels but also those that are fixed in place such as the air in-take grilles and wheelarc h e s. The basic panel construction uses aluminium extrusions welded together to f o rm a rigid framework that is bonded to an aluminium sheet using a stru c t u r a l adhesive. The aluminium sheet is punched to create fuel filler and lighting apert u re s and is sheared to the finished size intern a l l y within PLP using modern sheet metal fabrication equipment. The completed panels can be either flat or profiled to suit the vehicle body. A wet paint process can also be applied to the interior of the panels to aid overall weather proofing in this section of the vehicle. Finally locks and gas stays can be p re-mounted to the locker doors thus reducing the installation time simply to hanging the doors. As well as traditional hinging of locker doors along the top horizontal edge, PLP can supply a manual paralift arrangement for applications where space may be limited to the side of the vehicle. A robust steel framework is mounted to the aluminium panel with appropriate adjustment both laterally and vert i c a l l y. Simpler equipment locker doors take advantage of being a cassette concept w h e reby a hinged inner leaf is p re-mounted by PLP to an outer frame. This gives the benefit of reduced installation time of the whole assembly to the vehicle as the lock and appropriate fittings are p re-fitted by PLP. The hinged leaf is framed by an aluminium e x t rusion thus varying thicknesses of panels can be accommodated e.g. aluminium sheet, composite panel etc. Either supplied in a mill finish condition for painting on the vehicle or pre - p o l y e s t e r powder coated by PLP, the locker door o ffers excellent value for money with longevity of life. 8 Powered doors PLP manufacture inswing and glider powered doors either electrical or pneumatic in operation. The door leaf construction is an aluminium extrusion profile surrounding toughened glass, screen printed if required, together with relevant mechanism mounting brackets and handpoles shaped and coloured to assist reduced mobility passengers. The door leaf assembly traditionally has gasket mounted glass but a bonded version is also possible. The door leaf can either be flat or profiled to match the vehicle aperture condition. The movement of the door is controlled via open/close push buttons that interface with a shelfplate arrangement located at the head of the door aperture, linking to the door leaves via floor mounted pillar tubes. pre-assembled by PLP and holds the logic dictating the speed of door operation, sensitive edge detection, 5 kph interlock etc. Audible warnings are also incorporated into the product where required to alert passengers to door movement, and optional lighting can be installed to assist safe passageway in times of darkness. The PLP powered door package includes the door leaf assembly with pillar tubes, shelfplate, aperture weather sealing kit and ancillary items including the buttons, pipework etc. Maintenance procedure All mechanisms, hinges, and rubber seals must be regularly checked for wear and cleaned and lubricated as required. All framework and glass must be cleaned with a non-abrasive cleaner. 9 Emergency window The traditional emergency window is a hinged glass contained within an aluminium framework suitable for gasket glazing to the vehicle body. Purpose designed hinges, located at the head of the window, fix through the glass and provide the ability for the glass to rotate to the exterior of the vehicle. At the bottom of the window is the PLP modular locking gear arrangement that, depending upon the overall window width, can give either a 2 or 3 point locking facility to retain the window in the closed position and provide seal compression to resist weathering. The locking gear comprises of reliable, high strength, silver chrome plated rods connecting to spindles that drive internal lock tongues. Operation is achieved through turning a handle, usually a minimum of one on the interior and one on the exterior of the window. Such handles are traditionally powder coated colour red (alternatives available upon request) and are mounted either horizontally or at a prescribed angle e.g. 45 degrees. The aluminium frame can be produced with either square or radius corners or a mixture of both if preferred. The recommended maximum overall dimension of the emergency window is 1800mm wide x 700mm high but PLP s experienced Engineering department will advise if you have a requirement outside this range. For example, a fixed glass could be mounted above or below the opening glass thus keeping the hinged portion within controlled limits. Optional gas stays can also be accommodated if the glass is required to remain in the fully open position once deployed. Glazing 5mm or 6mm toughened clear or tinted. T h e re are a number of outer frame p rofiles available with two of the most popular re f e renced for typical radius c o rn e red re q u i rements plus a typical bonded installation pro f i l e. Depending upon the overall width of the window either one or two vents can be present and are opened by a passenger pulling the extru d e d f i n g e rgrip profile running along the top of each vent. Alternatively an unframed vent can be supplied with a handle mounted through the glass. The vents are held in either the fully open or fully closed position via tensioned springs located within the horizontal crossrail. The opening force can be fine tuned by the addition/deletion of springs but care must be taken as the spring pre s s u re also provides the n e c e s s a ry compression upon the weatherseal. 4mm or 5mm thick toughened glass is the usual glazing medium for hopper windows but bespoke p rofiles do exist for thicker glass re q u i rements. 11 Hopper window double glazed Gasket mounting Double glazed unit Double glazed hopper windows use the c o re principles of the single glazed pro d u c t but with the aluminium profiles incre a s e d in size to accommodate the incre a s e d thickness of the double glazed unit. Like its single glazed counterpart, the double glazed hopper can also be either rubber gasket mounted or bonded to the vehicle through a choice of applicable outer frame extrusions as shown on the c ross-sectional drawings. Significant to the design however are the v a rying methods of glass retention which give the end user various options re maintenance and reglaze in the event of the glass unit being damaged. The wedge system utilises the patented Beclatite rubber profile to hold the double glazed units within the framework but allows the glass to be removed from the exterior of the vehicle without removing the window from the bodyside. It also has the advantage of not requiring materials with a shelf-life hence the cost of repair is constant and unaffected by curing times when compared to bonding. A l t e rnatively if a flusher extern a l appearance is re q u i red then the bonded unit installation method can be purc h a s e d. Within this design the bottom double glazed unit is stepped along the cro s s r a i l thus ensuring that both panes of the double glazed unit are bonded to the framework, whilst allowing the unit to be removed from the exterior of the vehicle without removing the window from the vehicle. In similar fashion the hopper vents can be individually removed from the outer frame for the reglazing function to be perf o rm e d in a controlled enviro n m e n t. The accompanying cro s s - s e c t i o n a l drawings show that a positive drainage path exists in both designs local to the double glazed unit, in order to achieve an acceptable warranty period against b reakdown of the double glazed unit seal. Maintenance pro c e d u re All mechanisms, hinges and rubber seals must be regularly checked for wear and cleaned and lubricated as re q u i re d. Drainage slots and channels should be checked regularly and kept clear of o b s t ructions. All framework and glass must be cleaned with a non-abrasive c l e a n e r. 12 Drivers signalling window Window styles Arrows represent sliding glasses. However, a fixed glass can be used if required. The drivers signalling window is available as either a traditional channel glazed configuration or as a removable rail. The choice of overall window design is vast with some of the choices outlined opposite, showing square and radius cornered, 3 panel, 4 panel etc. Please contact the PLP Engineering department for clarification if you are unsure as to whether your requirement is achievable. The removable rail design offers a higher performance of slide and easier repair capability compared to traditional channel glazed windows in that the sliding glass is encapsulated in an aluminium slider rail along the bottom edge. In turn the slider rail contains nylon blocks that create the easy slide motion. Furthermore the tension on the nylon blocks can be adjusted thus giving longevity of life through very simple maintenance. Moreover should the sliding glasses require replacement then they can be removed from the outer frame without demounting the whole of the window from the vehicle aperture. This is performed by removing a few strategically placed screws from the removable rail thus allowing it and the glass assemblies to come free. For higher security environments the drivers signalling window is also available with 9.5mm thick laminated glass and is the perfect accompaniment to the driver s assault protection door. Furthermore PLP are able to offer a continental style sliding window that exhibits a cut-out within the glass thus giving the perception of a flush glazed bodyside. 13 Top sliding window Glass The top sliding window is very similar to the drivers signalling window design in that it can be supplied in either a channel glazed or removable rail condition. A wide choice of aluminium extrusion outer frame profiles are available suitable for either rubber gasket or bonded installation to the vehicle. 14 Locks The photographs below show the lock mechanism mounted to an emergency exit door as well as a typical internal lock casing and exterior handles. Lock assemblies are available in high grade chromium plate, dull nickel or black powder coated. A comprehensive range of steel locks is available from PLP to suit either slam or rotating handle applications. Due to the base material the PLP lock range is extremely durable and of the highest quality, thus providing the user with a robust product designed to outlast others on the market. The exterior handle has been ergonomically designed and has the word PULL cast into it, to give the user clear instruction on its use, available in either key locking or non-locking configuration. Alternatively the handle can be supplied without wording if preferred. The interior lock casing and accompanying rod can be either face mounted to a door or, if the door is being manufactured by PLP, can be recessed between internal and external skins. An interior handle can be located at any point along the internal rod which releases the lock tongue when operated. If the overall dimensions or profile of the door dictate the need for more than one locking point then the PLP lock range is modular in design and can accommodate two or three point locking also. Note that the lock casing can be mounted horizontally or vertically in this case. The PLP lock range is available in black polyester powder or silver chrome finish as standard and may be purchased either pre-assembled to a door product or as a stand-alone commodity. 15 Destination equipment PLP manufacture manual destination equipment to suit individual vehicle aperture conditions suitable for printed blind installation. Typical destination equipment configurations include: 4-way design normally located behind the front windscreen, incorporating the destination name and triple route number (TRN). The advantage of a 4-way design is that only one handle is required to change both the destination name and route number blinds. Alternatively PLP can supply a traditional combination unit with one operating handle for the destination name and a separate one for the route number. Such applications are often located on the side of the vehicle. Triple Route Number (TRN) simply showing the route number, typically found at the rear of a vehicle. Other configurations include a QRN (Quadruple Route Number) and a simple destination box. Please consult the PLP Engineering department to discuss alternative requirements as most options can be accommodated. The destination equipment can be pre-mounted by PLP into a surround frame or box complete with ABS mask for improved aesthetics, together with the option of powder coating the box to match the vehicle interior. Other options include latches to prevent unwanted interference and internal lighting specific to each unit.
