3 Overview This guide will help you install your new XLR-8 60 extended rack autosampler with a simple configuration. This guide also explains how to upgrade a CETAC ASX-560 autosampler to a CETAC XLR-8 60 extended rack autosampler. You will remove the base of your ASX-560 autosampler, and the ASX-560 will become the "autosampler head" of the XLR The Operator s Manual, which you can find on the included CD, provides more information on every aspect of setting up the autosampler for your application. This guide shows common versions of the autosampler. Your autosampler may have different racks, a different probe, or other minor differences from what is shown. CAUTION LIFTING HAZARD Two people are required to lift the autosampler. Lifting should be done with a person situated on either side of the instrument. CAUTION WARNING Ensure the power switch is off and the power cord is unplugged before proceeding with installation. If the power is left on, motors may move unexpectedly and cause injury. CHEMICAL INJURY HAZARD The autosampler is intended for use only by qualified operators who have been trained in safe laboratory practices. Make sure you know the hazards associated with all of the chemicals you are using, and take the appropriate precautions. Exposure to laboratory chemicals may result in serious injury. MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL HAZARDS The autosampler has moving parts which can pinch or puncture you. The autosampler also has electrical components which could pose a shock or fire hazard. This Quick Installation Guide assumes that you are familiar with autosampler safety. See the Autosampler Safety Manual (included with the autosampler) and the Operator s Manual (on the CD) for notices and safety information. 5 Step 1: Choose a Location Place the autosampler close to the ICP-MS or other analytical instrument. Place the autosampler where space, liquid waste, and power requirements can be met. If you have not already evaluated the intended location for the autosampler, see the Operator s Manual. Step 2: Unpack the Autosampler 1 Inspect all components for shipping damage. 2 Place the tray on the autosampler base. 3 Mount the rinse station. Step 3: Prepare the Autosampler Head (Upgrade Kits Only) If you ordered the XLR-8 60 as a complete system, skip to Step 4: Mount the Head Assembly Onto the XLR-8 60 Base on page 9. Removing the Head Assembly from the ASX-560 Autosampler 1 Turn the autosampler upside-down. The Z-drive (if installed) should hang over the edge of the table. Alternatively, you can temporarily remove the Z-drive assembly. See the ASX-560 Operator s Manual if you need instructions for removing the Z-drive. 2 Remove the four screws from the base. 6 3 Remove the rubber gasket and feed the cables into the autosampler head. These cables will not be needed. Figure 4 Moving Unused Cables Out of the Way There are leveling screws which protrude from the bottom of the autosampler head. These screws do not normally need further adjustment. 7 Installing the Brackets 1 Turn the autosampler head right-side-up. 2 Remove the four screws which secure the cover to the back of the autosampler. Don t remove the cover you just need to free up the holes so that the brackets can be installed. 3 On the left side, install the bracket for the XLR-8 60 chain. 8 5 Below the Z-axis motor, install the tubing guide bracket. Figure 9 Installing the Tubing Guide Bracket Installing the Standards Rack 1 Locate the XLR-8 60 standards rack. 9 Mounting the Chain Assembly 1 Attach the chain to the autosampler head using the three supplied screws. Figure 12 Attaching the Chain to the Head Step 4: Mount the Head Assembly Onto the XLR-860 Base If you installed an upgrade kit, this step should already be complete and you can skip to the next step. 1 Place the extended rack onto a sturdy work surface. You will need access to the back of the instrument. 2 Place the head assembly on the rails of the extended rack. Note the interlocking pegs in Figure 11. 10 3 Tighten the two screws with a 5/32 inch hex key or hex screwdriver. Figure 14 Tightening the Screws Step 5: Connect the Cables 1 Attach the chain to the base using the three supplied screws. Figure 15 Attaching the Chain 2 Connect the COM2 serial cable from the chain to the base of the XLR (This is the shorter of the two serial cables.) 11 3 Check that the power switch is turned off, and then connect the two power cables to the base of the XLR WARNING Do not plug in the desktop "brick" transformer until you are ready to use the autosampler. The autosampler could move unexpectedly and cause an injury. There are two 24 V power connectors: LED 5 Pins 6 Pins Figure V Power Connectors Connect the 6-pin cable from the desktop "brick" transformer to right connector on the base of the XLR Connect the 5-pin cable from the left connector on the base to the autosampler head. This cable passes through the chain. To Autosampler To Transformer Figure 18 Power Connections for ASX-520 The LED indicates when the XLR-8 60 is powered on. 4 Connect the two serial cables to the autosampler head. The cables are located in the chain. Connect the COM 1 cable to the COM 1 connector and connect the COM 2 cable to the COM 2 connector. COM 1 connects the autosampler head to the host computer, and COM 2 connects the autosampler head to the XLR-8 60 base. 11

13 Step 6: Mount the Z-Drive The Z-drive moves the probe up and down. The Z-drive is shipped detached from the autosampler. 1 Carefully unpack the Z-drive. 2 Find the Y-axis carriage on the arm of the autosampler. The Z-drive will be attached to this carriage. 14 4 Secure the Z-drive to the carriage using the two thumbscrews. Figure 23 Securing the Z-Drive 5 Feed the cable through the rear guide block and around the rotor, and then tighten the nut to secure the cable sleeve to the guide block. Figure 24 Guide Block with Nut 6 Turn the rotor clockwise as far as it will go. 7 Finish sliding the cable around the rotor on the back of the autosampler. Loosen the thumbscrew on the rotor to allow the cable to pass through the clamp, with about 2 mm of cable extending past the clamp. 14

15 Figure 25 Position of Cable on Rotor 8 Verify that there is a small gap between the Z-axis slider and cap at the top of the Z-drive (approximately 1-3 mm). Adjust the cable a bit if necessary. Figure 26 Z-Drive at Top Position With Gap 9 Hold the cable flat against the rotor and secure the cable by tightening thumbscrew on the rotor. The thumbscrew should be as tight as possible using just your fingers. Figure 27 Securing Cable to Rotor 15

16 The cable is pre-cut to the proper length and does not need to be trimmed when properly installed. 10 Rotate the Z-drive rotor back and forth to ensure that the Z-drive moves up and down freely. CAUTION Never push the Z-axis slider to move it up or down. Pushing on the Z-axis slider can kink the drive cable. Instead, rotate the Z-drive rotor on the back of the autosampler. 17 Step 7: Mount the Tray and Rinse Station Installing the Tray 1 Place the tray on the base of the autosampler. 2 Install the rinse tubing block on the left edge of the XLR-8 60 base. Figure 29 Installing the Rinse Tubing Block Installing the Rinse Station 1 With a No.1 (small) Phillips head screwdriver, loosen the four screws on the rinse station holder. 2 Place the rinse station on the left end of the standards rack. 18 Step 8: Connect the Rinse Station Use a pumped drain arrangement, where one channel of the peristaltic pump supplies rinse solution to the rinse station, while the other channel of the pump drains the used rinse solution. Figure 31 Typical Pumped Drain Arrangement Depending on your application, the waste rinse solution may be returned to the rinse solution container and recycled, or it may be directed to a separate waste container. To connect the rinse station using the pumped drain, complete the following steps: 1 Verify that the supplied tubing material is compatible with the rinse solution you are using. Most autosamplers are supplied with Tygon tubing. Contact CETAC if you need different tubing material. 2 Locate the two pieces of adapter tubing. 18

19 Figure 32 Adapter Tubing 3 Connect the smaller ends of the tubing as shown. Note that the two tubes are on different channels. Pass the larger ends through the bracket on the side of the autosampler. Figure 33 Connecting the Adapter tubes 4 Connect the tubing from the bottom of the pump, closest to the back of the autosampler, to the bottom fitting of the rinse station. Refer to Figure 34. Carefully press the tubing straight in to avoid breaking the fitting. This tubing will pump rinse solution into the rinse station. 5 Connect the tubing from the top of the pump, farthest from the back of the autosampler, to the top fitting of the rinse station. This tubing will pump rinse solution from the rinse station. Figure 34 Rinse Station Connections 6 Locate the rinse source tubing and drain tubing. This tubing should pass through the chain then under the Z-drive motor. 19

20 Figure 35 Tubing Bracket Under the Z-Drive Motor 7 Connect the rinse source tubing to the bottom of the channel closest to the back of the autosampler. 8 Connect the drain tubing to the top of the channel farthest from the back of the autosampler. Figure 36 Completed Peristaltic Pump Connections Ensure that the drain tubing outlet is placed so that it will remain above the surface of the liquid in the waste container. If the end of the tube is immersed, the waste solution might back up and overflow. 20

21 Step 9: Install the Sample Probe NOTE To prevent contamination, wear gloves when handling the probe. 1 Shut down and unplug the autosampler. 2 Rotate the rotor on the back of the autosampler to move the Z-axis slider to the top of the Z-drive. Figure 38 Installing the Probe Clamps 5 Guide the probe straight down until the tip of the probe is level with the bottom of the Z-Drive. 21

22 Figure 39 Adjusting the Probe Height 6 Tighten the probe clamps. 7 Use the provided spiral wraps to secure the sample tube to the Z-drive cable. There should be just a little curve to the free sample tube when the probe is lowered, and an untangled loop when the probe is raised. Check that the tubing will not be stretched and will not snag on an obstacle when the probe is moved to the far corner sample positions. Spiral wrap Loop Figure 40 Positioning the Sample Tubing 8 Optional: Moisten a Kimwipes wiper with 10% HNO 3 and wipe the probe to remove any aqueous or inorganic contamination from the surface. Then moisten a new Kimwipes wiper with a chromatography grade solvent such as n-propanol, isopropanol, or hexane and wipe the probe again to remove any oil. Let the probe air dry. Be careful not to touch the probe without gloves residue from handling the probe can cause the surface tension properties of the probe surface to change and can lead to material dripping off the probe during use. Periodic cleaning may be necessary depending on the application. 22

23 Step 10: Connect the Sample Tubing to the Analytical Instrument One end of the sample transfer tubing is pre-connected to the sample probe. The tubing should be long enough to allow the sample probe to move easily to every position. On the other hand, keep the tubing as short as possible to minimize carryover between samples. 1 Determine the length of the sample transfer tubing you need, and cut it to size. 2 Connect the free end of the sample transfer tubing to the inlet of the analytical instrument s peristaltic pump. If an enclosure is present, connect the trimmed tubing from the sample probe to the inside bulkhead using the nut and ferrule provided with the enclosure. Then attach tubing from the outside bulkhead to the input of the analytical instrument. Step 11: Connect the Power Supply The autosampler is powered by the included external power supply. Ensure that you position the autosampler so that the power cord is not blocked and can be quickly disconnected if needed. 1 Turn the power switch on base OFF. 2 Turn the power switch on the autosampler head OFF. 3 Check the plug on the power cord to verify that it is of the correct type for your country. 4 Plug the power cord into a power outlet. 5 Plug the power cord into the power supply. 24 Step 12: Connect the Host Computer You can use a USB or serial cable. A serial cable is preinstalled in the chain. Serial Connection 1 Connect the COM 1 serial cable to the serial port on the host computer. USB Connection 1 Connect a USB cable between the host computer and the autosampler. You will need to route this cable through the chain. 2 Allow Windows to search for a driver. In most cases, the driver will be found online and installed automatically. In some cases, you may need to install a driver from the CD; see the Operator s Manual for information. The USB driver will make the USB port emulate an RS-232 COM port. Step 13: Test the Installation 1 Install the ASX Dashboard software and Test32 utility from the CD. 2 Check the alignment of the tray to the autosampler head. See the instructions in the XLR-8 60 Operator s Manual on the CD. 3 Use the IQ-OQ utility (part of the ASX Dashboard software) to test autosampler operation. 4 Use the Autosampler Config utility to adjust the speed of the autosampler. 5 Use the manual controls in the ICP-MS software (or other instrument control software) to verify that the software is communicating with the autosampler. 24
