2 What You Need to Provide for Assembly Fine-tipped soldering iron and small diameter (1/32 ) rosin-core solder (lead-free or leaded) Wire clippers Eye protection Vise or third hand Assembly Instructions Assemble the Circuit Board 1. Insert the tactile switch into the bottom of the printed circuit board. Be sure to press it in all the way so that it rests flat on the circuit board: 2. Solder the switch in place from this side, being careful not to melt the plastic switch body. Do two diagonally-opposite pins first, then recheck to make sure the switch is still pressed flat against the circuit board. Then solder the remaining two pins. Finally, clip the leads protruding through the top flush with the top surface of the circuit board. 3. Take the LED and insert it into the lead bender fixture as shown in the photo, making sure that the right-angle formed lead is in the rear and the diagonally-formed lead is in front: 4. 3 5. Bend the leads of the LED over the wider tine of the fixture, once, and then down to form a complete 180 bend: 6. Check to make sure the LED s leads are oriented properly. With the LED pointed upwards and the leads bent behind it, the right-angle formed lead will be on the left; the diagonally-formed lead, on the right: 7. Insert the LED into the circuit board through the large hole, so that its rim rests against the edge of the hole: 8. 4 9. Insert the battery holder into the board, being sure to press it in all the way so it rests flat: 10. Flip the board over and solder the tabs protruding through the holes to the circuit board: 11. 5 12. Slide the battery into its holder, positive (+) side up. It is very important not to insert the battery upside down. Doing so will damage the LED: 13. Once the battery has been inserted, the LED will go into a power-up mode where it cycles through all of its colors and then flashes them for a while. Once this cycle is complete, the tactile switch may be used to select from among seven constant colors or a mode that cycles through them. The switch can be activated either by pressing it from behind the circuit board or by pressing on the rear of the badge while it s sitting on a level surface. Any mode in which the LED is off will draw minimal current from the battery, so the battery can be left in place without fear of it draining prematurely. 14. To remove the battery, use the skinny tine of the lead-bending tool to push it out: 15.
