FARM WAGONS Safety General Hazard Information No accident-prevention program can be successful without the wholehearted cooperation of the person who is directly responsible for the operation of the equipment. A large number of accidents can be prevented only by the operator anticipating the result before the accident is caused and doing something about it. No power-driven equipment, whether it be transportation or processing, whether it be on the highway, in the field, or in the industrial plant, can be safer than the person who is at the controls. If accidents are to be prevented--and they can be prevented--it will be done by the operators who accept the full measure of their responsibility. It is true that the designer, the manufacturer, and the safety engineer can help; and they will help, but their combined efforts can be wiped out by a single careless act of the operator. It is said that, the best kind of a safety device is a careful operator. We, at Unverferth Mfg. Co., Inc. ask that you be that kind of operator. SIGNAL WORDS REMEMBER: THINK SAFETY A CAREFUL OPERATOR IS THE BEST INSURANCE AGAINST AN ACCIDENT! INDICATES AN EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS SITUATION OR ACTION THAT WILL RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. INDICATES A HAZARDOUS SITUATION OR ACTION THAT COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. INDICATES AN UNSAFE SITUATION OR ACTION THAT MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY. Is used for instruction on operating, adjusting, or servicing a machine. 1-2 (October 2011)

FARM WAGONS Operation SECTION III Operation Load Capacity Tractor Ballast Tractor Drawbar Tires and Wheels Checking Chassis Load Distribution Adjustable Quick Hitch Tongue Tongue Length Adjusting Wheelbase Transport Chain (October 2011) 3-1

FARM WAGONS Operation Load Capacity The following models are designed to operate with a total maximum gross load of... Model 872 = 16,000 lbs. Model 1072 = 20,000 lbs. Model 1280 = 24,000 lbs. Model 1396/1396B = 26,000 lbs. Gross load is the combined weight of the Farm Wagon, wagon box or bed, and the material being hauled. Net load is the weight of the material being hauled. Operator safety and FARM WAGON life will depend on the correct combination of load weight, tire load capacity and tire inflation. FARM WAGON rating is the maximum recommended gross load for the wagon gear when the tire load capacity is greater than the FARM WAGON capacity. When the tire load capacity is less than the FARM WAGON rating, the tire load capacity becomes the maximum recommended gross load of the unit. Tractor Ballast Refer to your tractor operator's manual for correct amount of weights or ballast to be used with towed vehicles. This implement may not be equipped with brakes. Ensure that the towing vehicle has adequate weight and braking capacity to tow this unit. See the towing vehicle operator's manual for towing and braking capacity. Tractor Drawbar Before attaching the FARM WAGON to any tractor drawbar, be sure the drawbar is pinned and locked on center and the drawbar pin is of proper size and a safety pin is used. 3-2 (October (January 2011) 2014)

FARM WAGONS Operation Tires and Wheels Check tire pressures and maintain at recommended values listed in the "MAINTENANCE" section of this manual. IMPROPERLY TORQUED WHEEL NUTS/BOLTS CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF IMPLEMENT CONTROL AND MACHINE DAMAGE. WHEEL NUTS/BOLTS MUST BE CHECKED REGU- LARLY. SEE TORQUE PAGE IN THE "MAINTENANCE" SECTION FOR PROPER WHEEL NUT/BOLT SPECIFICATIONS. WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER FAILURES CAUSED BY IMPROPERLY TORQUED WHEEL NUTS/BOLTS. For questions regarding new tire warranty, please contact your local original equipment tire dealer. Used tires carry no warranty. Tire manufacturers' phone numbers and web sites are listed in the "MAINTENANCE" Section of this manual for your convenience. Checking Chassis Periodically, check all bolts and connections, especially before operating on the highway. Looseness in the reach, steering mechanism, or coupling pole may cause the FARM WAGON to sway or whip, repair or replace any worn or damaged components immediately. Load Distribution Be sure the load is well balanced on the FARM WAGON to insure proper trailing. Poor load distribution will cause improper trailing of the wagon. For best trailing results, the load must be evenly distributed between the front and rear axles and between the left-hand and right-hand sides. (October 2011) 3-3

FARM WAGONS Operation Adjustable Quick Hitch Tongue The adjustable quick hitch tongue permits the FARM WAGON to be hooked-up to the tractor safely. Position the tractor in-front of the FARM WAGON. Lift the tongue and extended body to attach the tractor drawbar. Back the tractor up to the re-latch tongue. Tongue Length For 872, 1072, and 1280 model Farm Wagons, to adjust the tongue length, simply lift up on tongue latch handle and extend completely. See "Adjustable Tongue Length" in Assembly Section of this manual. For the 1396 model Farm Wagon, adjust the tongue length by lifting up on the latch handle and extending inner body to desired length. Remove the capscrew and stop nut securing the latch handle to the inner tongue body, move latch handle into new hole location and replace hardware to attain desired length. Adjusting Wheelbase To adjust wheelbase, remove the capscrews, flat washers, and stop nuts, holding the coupling pole to the axle frames. Slide the coupling pole / axle frames to the desired setting. Replace hardware and tighten Transport Chain ALWAYS USE TRANSPORT CHAIN WHEN TRANSPORTING IMPLEMENTS. FAILURE TO USE A TRANSPORT CHAIN COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE IF IMPLE- MENTS BECOME DISENGAGED. REPLACE TRANSPORT CHAIN IF ANY LINK OR END FITTING IS BROKEN, STRETCHED OR DAMAGED. DO NOT WELD TRANSPORT CHAIN. Secure the transport chain to the Farm Wagon tongue and to the tractor drawbar before transporting. Transport chain should have a minimum rating equal to the gross weight of implement and all attachments. Use only ASABE approved chains. Allow no more slack in chain than necessary to permit turning. NOTE: When towing two wagons, wrap the chain of second wagon around the rear axle of the first wagon and secure. The transport chain of the lead wagon must be sized for the total weight of both grain wagons. 3-4 (October (January 2011) 2014)

FARM WAGONS Operation Transport Chain (continued) Attach transport chain by inserting chain link between underside lugs on tongue and attach using pin (108049) and secure with two spiral pins ( ). 28 FARM WAGONS Maintenance Adjusting Wheel Toe-In After first use, recheck toe-in. Front wheel toe-in has been preset at the factory. If adjustment becomes necessary, use the following procedure. 1. Place the tongue in a straight and horizontal position. This can be checked by measuring reference lines "A" and "B". These measurements are the same when the tongue is straight forward. 2. Measure the distance between the front wheels at the centerline of the tires, Front (F) and Rear (R). Measurement "R" should be 1/8" to 3/8" longer than measurement "F" for proper toe-in. 3. If not, loosen both clamps on each tie rod and turn the tie rod to increase or decrease its length. When desired adjustment is reached, tighten clamps on tie rods. NOTE: Tie rods must be adjusted equally, so that dimension "C" is the same on both sides. FIG. 2-1 OM-00221A 4-2 (October 2011)

FARM WAGONS Maintenance General Maintenance Instructions For farm wagon and bearing longevity, as well as ease of operation, periodic lubrication is essential. This also helps to flush out moisture and dirt. Grease Gun Lube Points Lube Cycle Tongue Hitch Pin (End of Steering Hinge) - 1 Point Grease Once/Year Steering Hinge Pin (Front of Front Frame) - 1 Point Grease Once/Year Spindle Bearings (Both Ends of Front Axle) - 2 Points Grease Once/Year Miscellaneous Lube Points Extension Part of Extendable Tongue Oil or Grease When Needed Wheel Bearing - 8 Points Repack Grease Yearly After first use: 1. Recheck toe-in. Tie rods -- adjust to minimum 1/8" toe in (1/8" to 3/8" toe measured at tires). Periodically during usage, check the following: 1. Tongue pivot pin. 2. Tie rod connections at radius arm and at steering hinge. 3. Coupling pole bolt and nuts. 4. Tire pressure -- follow manufacturer's specification (too high or too low pressure causes abnormal tread wear). 5. Beveled wheel bolts -- wheel torque requirements. After each season: 1. Check welds on front and rear axles to coupling pole and to hounds. 2. Tie rods -- adjust to minimum 1/8" toe in (1/8" to 3/8" toe measured at tires). 3. It is recommended for improved tire life that tires be rotated diagonally. Hub Assembly 1. Use grease to lubricate the seal lip. 2. Place the hub onto the spindle. Rotate the hub while doing this so that the seal lip does not fold under as the lip goes on the seal lip of the spindle. 3. Be sure the outer cone slides on the spindle and into the cup. 4. Assemble the washer and the nut onto the spindle and tighten the nut to ft.-lbs. Rotate the hub while tightening the nut. 5. Back off the nut until it becomes loose. 6. While rotating the hub, retighten the nut to remove all clearance. 7. Line up the next slot in the nut with the hole in the spindle. Insert the cotter pin and bend the cotter pin. 8. Install the hub cap. (January (October 2015) 2011) 4-3

FARM WAGONS Maintenance Brake System Sliding Hitch and Latch The braking system on your farm wagon is designed to release automatically when you backup. Before adjusting individual brake shoes, inspect the master cylinder push plate and put tube adjustment screw for proper contact when the sliding hitch and latch mechanism are compressed. If necessary, adjust the setscrew for a 1/4" gap in the normal free position (Fig. 2-2). Be sure to retighten jam nut. FIG. 2-2 OM DO NOT PACK REAR HUBS FULL OF GREASE. EXCESSIVE GREASE MAY LEAK INTO BRAKE DRUMS CAUSING BRAKE FAILURE. Saltwater, granular fertilizers, and other corrosive materials are destructive to metal. To prolong the life of a braking system used under corrosive conditions, flush the actuator periodically with a high pressure water hose. Be sure to grease bearings and oil all moving parts after the unit has dried. At the end of the season, when unit is to be stored, remove the brake drums and clean inside the brakes. Pack the wheel bearing before drum is installed. Master Cylinder Brake fluid level may be checked by removing the cap on the master cylinder. Refill level with a heavy-duty brake fluid that meets DOT-3. Do not clean any brake components in gasoline, kerosene, or oil. 4-4 (October (January 2011) 2014)

FARM WAGONS Maintenance Brake System (continued) Brake Shoe Adjustment Brakes are set at the factory, however, it may become necessary to adjust shoes after first season. The brakes incorporate a "Back-up" feature that makes it necessary to rotate the wheels in the direction of forward rotation only when making adjustments. Use appropriate lifting device rated at a minimum of 2,000 lbs. to lift Farm Wagon and support with jack stands rated at 2,000 lbs., lift each wheel. Turn adjustment cog wheel located in slot on the brake backing plate until you cannot rotate the wheel by hand, then back-off the adjustment 1-2 threads. NOTE: Always rotate drum in direction of forward rotation only. Maintain brake fluid level in master cylinder. Adjust brake shoes as necessary. Purge air from lines if necessary. Brake Bleeding Use ONLY quality DOT-3 heavy-duty brake fluid. If pressure bleeding equipment is available follow the manufacturer's instructions in bleeding the system. Manual Bleeding Fill master cylinder with fluid. Bleed brakes first (farthest from master cylinder). Loosen the bleeder screw located in wheel cylinder one turn. The system is now open to the atmosphere through a passage drilled in the screw. Securely install bleeder hose to bleed screw on first wheel cylinder to be bled. (August (October 2012) 2011) 4-5

FARM WAGONS Maintenance Brake Adjusting Instructions FALLING OBJECTS CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. DO NOT WORK UNDER THE MACHINE AT ANY TIME WHILE BEING HOISTED. BE SURE ALL LIFTING DEVICES AND SUPPORTS ARE RATED FOR THE LOADS BEING HOISTED. THESE ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS WILL REQUIRE SAFE LIFTING DEVICES UP TO 26,000 LBS. SPECIFIC LOAD RATINGS FOR INDIVIDUAL LOADS WILL BE GIVEN AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME IN THE INSTRUCTIONS. To bleed and adjust the brakes on the rear wheels of the running gear, follow this procedure: 1. Properly chock the tires not being serviced. Remove the master cylinder cover on the tongue of the wagon. Make sure the master cylinder is not being actuated. 2. Using a safe lifting device rated for 26,000 lbs., raise up the axle to allow the tire with the brakes needing adjustment to spin freely. Loosen the anchor pin nut on the inside of the brake assembly back plate with a 1 1/8" socket. 3. Spin the tire in the direction of forward travel of the wagon. While the tire is spinning, adjust the brake and adjustment screw to increase the brakes until full contact of the brakes can be heard. The shoe adjustment screw is located behind the rubber cover located on the opposite side of the assembly back plate from the anchor pin. There will normally be 7-8 threads showing to achieve full contact. 4. While the tire is spinning, slowly apply and hold pressure to the master cylinder to engage the brakes. With the brakes engaged, retighten the anchor pin nut to 365 ft.-lbs. 5. Release the pressure to the master cylinder. 6. Back off the brake adjusting screw until 3.5 to 4 threads are showing. Spin the tire in the direction of forward travel of the wagon to make sure the wheel spins freely. If it does not, adjust the screw so 1/2 less threads are showing. 7. If brake contact is still severe, repeat steps 1 through Lower the jack, install the master cylinder cover and remove the chocks from the tires. 9. Check the brakes by pulling the trailer at least one mile. Bring the wagon up to normal towing speed or a maximum of 25 mph and apply the brakes to bring the unit to a stop several times. Check the brakes for excessive heat. 10. After allowing the brakes to cool, adjust the brake shoe adjustment depending on the feel of the brakes. 4-6 (October (January 2011) 2015)

FARM WAGONS Maintenance Typical Wheel Cylinder Parts In overhauling wheel cylinders, it is best to remove the cylinder from the brake cluster assembly in order to facilitate repair. To Disassemble To remove the cylinder, unhook the brake shoe lever retracting spring and expand the shoe levers by hand. Disconnect hydraulic line, remove cylinder mounting bolts, and lift cylinder from mount. If cylinder is connected with brake hose, loosen, but do not twist hose connection. Lift cylinder free of mount, pulling hose through mounting bracket, then unscrew cylinder from hose. Remove the rubber boot. Push out internal parts or apply low pressure compressed air to fluid inlet blowing parts from cylinder. Clean parts well and keep them clean. There must be no trace of dirt, metal filings, sludge, or other deposits when the unit is ready for assembly. Use lint-free cloth in cleaning. Internal parts must be cleaned in denatured alcohol or hydraulic brake fluid. Cylinder castings may be cleaned with your usual cleaning methods but must be finish cleaned with denatured alcohol or hydraulic brake fluid to remove all traces of solvent. Mineral base solvents deteriorate rubber parts. To Reassemble To reassemble, lubricate parts and cylinder wall with clean brake fluid. Push in spring, rubber cap, and one piston. To assemble the rubber cup; cock it slightly so the flange will not bind. A slight vacuum applied to the fluid inlet will prevent the spring from forcing out the cup. Install boot making certain it is seated into the boot grooves on the cylinder. (October 2011) 4-11
