2 Visual Dr audible May be used in all weather conditions Can be bridged across phases, and js unaffected by nejghbauring valtage fjelds Indication unaffected temperature by Camplies with VDE 0681 A Live Line Tester is essentially an operating rod with an indication device which detects and shows whether voltage is present on the item to be tested. Single phase contact, i. e. physical contact with the conductor to be tested is a necessary part of the test procedure. The Voltage Detector will then indicate whether parts of an installation are under operating voltage or not All ARCUS Voltage testers comply with VDE 0681 part 4/.86 and consequently all requirements of that specification are fully met as a minimum. As there are approximately requirements in the specification, we list below some of the more important safety constructional features of the ARCUSTON and ARCUSLIGHT. Extension Piece In contrast to VDE 0427/1.63, ARCUS Live Line Testers have an extension piece. This overcomes the problem of interference frorn neighbouring voltage fields as weil as the influence of stray voltages and induced voltages. Conducting Parts The current limiting resistors in the extension piece will not reduce its insulation safety. The Live Line Tester is safe to use when bridging across phases, both in the dry conditions and in the case of Testers which "may be used in damp or wet conditions" under heavily precipitous conditions. The Tester may rest across parts under voltage for up to 1 minute. Insulation Level Each Live Line Tester is subjected to standard routine tests to ensure its complete safety: Tests are made on leakage current and voltage bridging safety levels. Each tester is calibrated to the maximum operating voltage Um. In the routine test the voltage Um is raised by % so as to provide a suitable safety factor. Mechanical Safety Routine tests are made on the ability of tester to withstand vibration and impact shock of the type that will be met under normaloperating conditions. Voltage Threshold Level The Tester will only indicate nominal operating voltages. Since the Tester can only show voltages from phase to earth, the indication "Line Alive" is given within the range 0.15 x Un and 0.4 x Un. For wide range testers the threshold level will be between 0.15xUn of the higher voltage and 0.4 x Un of the lower voltage. In order to comply with VDE 0681, a wide range detector is limited to a maximum ratio of 2 : 1 between the upper and lower voltage levels. For example if a detector is supplied for operation at 60-1 KV, the threshold point will be between > 16,5 KVand KV dependent on the test assembly when measured to earth. It should be noted that the Live Line Testers which are offered for u. K. operating voltages of KV therefore have a wider ratio of 2 : 1 and would not comply with VDE 0681 in this respect only. D. C. Valtages The Live Line Testers described in this pamphlet are not to be used tor D. C. voltages. Stray Voltages The term stray voltages covers voltages which are induced by capacitive or inductive coupling. Stray voltages are generally less than % of the nominal voltage and will consequently not be indicated by the detector. Occasionally, there will be situations where the interference is from a much higher voltage source, e. g. a KV line can be subjected to interference from a 380 KV line. The voltage tester is not able to differentiate between stray voltages and operating voltages in such cases. Stray Fields Since the detector is a single phase device, it follows that voltage measurement is always made with reference to earth potential. Earlier Live Line Testers were influenced by the effect of a distorted earth field, e. g. around large corona screening rings or neighbouring conductors of the same potential. The danger of false indication through this cause does not exist with the ARCUS detectors, since the signal detection equipment and indicator housing are located weil away from the test probe and are outside the effect of stray fields which can cause these incorrect indications. Signal Clarity The test electrode of the ARCUSTON is visually located onto the item to be tested. An audible indication is then given as to whether the line is alive or not. All personne' in a large area will be able to hear the noise signal which will overcome a substantial background noise. The optical indication of the ARCUSLIGHT is clearly shown from two different light sources. Operators who are colour blind can therefore still use this equipment while observing a change in the position of the light.
3 ta aperate Built-in selfchecking device Wide range of GonstruGtion Full range of accessories Indication The two conditions "Line Dead" and "Line Alive" are indicated on the ARCUSTON by means of an intermittent tone which changes to a continuous note when the line is alive. For the U. K. the normal sound indication system which is chosen is "Line Alive" - Noise Stops and "Line Dead" -continuous note. With the ARCUSliGHT the lamp will change from green to red if the line is alive. These methods of signalling provide a failsafe indication. Self-Checking Device The self-checking device ensures that the batteries are fully charged and that all components within the electronic circuit are functioning correctly. In the event of a fault on the soldered connections orcomponents, this will be detected by the self-checking device and the normal "Circuit Healthy" signal will not be given. The capacity of the usual batteries is checked as weil. The functional capability of impedances which are not in the electronic circuit must be checked by independent measurements and tests. These impedances are selected, so as to be completely stable at the appropriate voltages of the instrument. The switching of the ARCUSTON detector by means of a rotating ring, ensures that the safety check must be completed before and after the live line test is made. In the case of the ARCUSLIGHT the safety check is carried out by pressing the push button. If the light changes from green to red when this button is pressed and back to green again when the button is released, then the ARCUSLIGHT is ready for use. Switching on the ARCUSTON by rotating the annular ring switch. Ease cf Handling The use of light components and multisectional closed operating rods enables the tester to be easily handled on masts. Routine Maintenance Safety Tests Each instrument will be subjected to a different amount of wear and tear, storage and transportation. There is consequently no set schedule in VDE 0681 as to the frequency of routine maintenance and safety testing. It is the responsibility of the appropriate engineer in the organisation concerned to decide on the type and frequency of the tests to be undertaken. We would suggest that these tests should include the checking of the threshold voltage level, the measurement of leakage current and a thorough inspection for mechanical damage. The high voltage tester is an important device both for the safety of personnel and for the installation. It must be treated with care and respect. The Association of German Electrical Power Companies (DKE) will prepare a guideline for routine safety checks and recoendations on the care of these instruments. Application in Type-tested switchgear Voltage testers which comply with VDE 0681 are suitable for type-tested switchgear under certain conditions. (See VDE 01 /4. 71, section 23 and DIN part 6/VDE 0670 part 6, May 1976 issue). Creepage distances for the insulation of voltage testers follow the basic recoendations of distances for flash-over levels in VDE 01. Before using the voltage tester in a type-tested switchboard it is necessary to ascertain whether the use of the tester is acceptable on that particular piece of equipment. All leading German manufacturers of switchboards have approved the ARCUS Voltage Detector for use with their equipment. The ARCUSTON Uve Une Tester in use on a mast. References I. 12 ß ~~ ~i ARCUSDISTANT Order no Weight: Length: III UN = ,2 kg 950 The acoustical distance tester ARCUSDISTANT III can be used to determine whether an h. v. overhead line is alive from the position of the traverse of the mast without galvanic contact. The 2-part tester consists of an electronic indicating section (1) and the insulating rod (2). In assembled condition the indicating section is traversable on the operating rod (3). This enables the user to place the tester parallel to the axis of the insulator independent I y from his position. The green mark (4) on the indigating segtion has to be GontaGted to the insulator armature whigh is earthed at the mast. The detegtion whether the respegtive overhead line is alive or dead is Garried out with the extension part (5) whigh dives into the elegtrig field with its length 4. Since almost years our enterprise otters distance testers from 1 on. On high voltage masts the detection of the absence of tension is considerably facilitated by the use of distance testers. On the other hand different influences from the outside have an effect on the response behaviour of the ARCUSDISTANT III as the voltage state of the conductor to be tested has to be proven at the electrical field of the protection armature which is earthed at the mast. For voltage testing speciallyon masts with several systems of different nominal voltage, angular masts, etc., weil experienced personnel is required. The safest method is to carry out the test during disconnecting where the change from a permanent tone to an intermittent signal is considered as reliable indication of a disconnected overhead line. In the meantime the caittee "Distance Valtage Testers" has elabarated a VDE-guideline ta which the ARCUSDISTANT III is adapted.
