3 Luminous transparency The crisp silhouette of the trees frames the deep blue of the evening sky. The striking architecture of the cemetery chapel sits in stark contrast to its natural surroundings, its transparency helping to detract from the inevitable solemnity of its role. The same is true of, which bathes the funeral parlour in light, keeping the surrounding darkness at bay. It too unites transparency, substance and brilliance to create a cohesive whole. Wherever contemporary design and solid dependability come together, the family is the obvious choice.

While these contrasting attributes are noticeable straight away to the observer, the technology behind this extraordinary effect is not immediately obvious. The matt surface layer appears to float freely in the air. Between it and the powder coated steel body is a transparent but shining surface a superpolished acrylic glass block. The technical challenge here was to find a way to make the sharp-edged solid acrylic glass block usable as a ceiling and wall luminaire (both recessed and surface-mounted versions) by applying a fine, even paint layer. The solution was found in a type of reversed diamond cut, in which parts of the shiny block were matted using paint.
