4 Electrostatic disc atomizers LACTec alphadisc Electrostatic disc coaters are paint atomizers which rotate around a vertical axis and are moved in a continual up and down motion by a reciprocator. The workpieces are guided in an Omega-shaped orbit around the reciprocating disc. The alphadisc spray head is fitted with a pneumatic turbine drive system. This drive system is characterized by fast response and a relatively low compressed air consumption, and is available in a range of different equipment variations. The spray head housing of the alphadisc can be fitted with a range of integrated function valves which allow automatic colour change and automatic flushing of the disc. The use of a separate flushing agent valve is also possible. This can be used to flush the disc during breaks in production without the need to open the main paint carrying valve. The valves are arranged in the spray head closely in front of the rotating disc. This permits residual paint and flushing agent to be guided out of the paint feed pipe into a catchment vessel via a separate return pipe. In combination with a quick colour change device, the required shade or paint type can be automatically changed with seconds. The use of automatic rotational frequency control permits economical use of the drive air. The compact design of the alphadisc permits simple removal of all enclosure elements for optimum access and convenient maintenance. The achievable rotational frequencies depend on the diameter of the used discs and the processed paint volume, and can be as high as 30,000 rpm. The total enclosure of the alphadisc spray head simplifies cleaning of the atomizer and so ensures a consistently high painting quality. The LACTec alphadisc can be used for the application of water-borne paints. LACTec powerdisc The LACTec disc spray head is driven by an EExd threephase motor. Using an electronic rotational frequency control system, the rotational frequency of the spray disc can be steplessly adjusted to the requirements of the application in question within a range of 1,000 to 12,000 rpm. The paint yield, depending on workpiece shape and rotational frequency, is between 80 and 98%. Various pneumatically actuated valves are integrated in the spray head for the execution of automatic colour changes and automatic flushing of the spray disc. It is also possible to -3-

5 process 3-component material in the head. In combination with an automatic colour changer, the colour shade to be processed can be changed within seconds PowerDisc for shock absorbers powerdisc for bicycle frames In many cases, by re-equipping with the LACTec powerdisc, previously necessary manual prepainting and post-painting work processes can be completely eliminated or reduced to an unavoidable minimum. Electronic control of the reciprocating movement also permits a delay to be integrated at the stroke reversal points or at certain preselectable positions of the painting stroke. Different speeds can also be travelled within a single stroke movement depending on the workpiece geometry. The speeds required for the atomization of water-thinnable paints and paints containing a high proportion of solid particles can be achieved without problems by the LACTec disc spray head. The high-torque electric motor holds the rotational frequency at an optimum preselected level. -4-
