3 Safety Precautions Be sure to observe the following precautions to prevent accidents and injuries. - Park the vehicle and chock the wheels. - If it is necessary to start the engine, perform the operation in a well ventilated area. - Before removing and reinstalling heavy parts such as the engine, transmission and differential using specified tools, check that there are no problems with the tools. - When working in a group of 2 or more, each person must work to ensure the safety of all team members. - To prevent burns and other injuries, use extra caution when handling parts that are subject to high temperatures, as well as rotating, sliding, or vibrating parts. - When lifting the vehicle using a jack, support it in the specified location using a safety stand. - When lifting the vehicle using a lift, lock the lift for safety. Also perform the following operation with care. Use of auto lift - Make absolutely certain that there are no other workers and no tools, parts, or other objects within the movable range of the lift. Also, be sure to announce all lift operations out loud (such as Raising the lift! and Lowering the lift! ) to alert other workers. - When raising or lowering the lift, pay attention to the positions of your arms, legs, and other body parts, and be extremely careful to prevent them from being caught in the lift. Use of brake cleaner - Use brake cleaner for appropriate purposes in accordance with instructions in the manual. - Do not use brake cleaner to remove dirt or stains from the engineers clothes and so forth, as it can catch on fire, causing serious burns. < Precautions > - Do not use brake cleaner near flames or fire. - Do not use large amounts of brake cleaner in a room where a fire is burning. - Do not keep brake cleaner in a place subject to high temperatures exceeding 40 C, such as a place subject to direct sunlight or near fire. - Do not put brake cleaner in fire. Edges - When handling the edges of parts and panels, wear protective gloves or apply protective tape to the edges to prevent injuries to your hands and fingers. 2

4 1. OPERATION FLOW CHART Verify Vehicle Eligibility 1. Check VIN range. 2. Check the TIS Vehicle Inquiry System. Not Involved No further action required. Involved Remove the LH and RH front wiper arm and blade assembly. Remove the serration pattern from the wiper arm pivot hole. Not Removable ONLY a small number of front wiper arm(s) are expected to be replaced. Removable Clean the debris from the splines of the pivot shafts. Replace only the front wiper arm(s) when the serration pattern cannot be successfully removed. Wiper blade will be reused. Use a new nut (for front wiper arm setting) and Install the front wiper arm and blade assembly. Campaign completed, return the Vehicle to the customer. 3

8 B. Tools: Illustration Part Name Qty Remarks Serration Removal Tool (Wiper Arm Reamer Set) 1 For removing the serration pattern from the front wiper arm pivot hole. The serration removal tool is specifically designed for the models mentioned in this Technical Instruction. Do not use this tool on other models. Each blade can be used for approximately 360 vehicles. When replacing the blade, press the blade toward the handle side until there is no gap, and then secure with the screw. C. 10 B. REMOVE THE FRONT WIPER ARM AND BLADE ASSEMBLY 1. REMOVE THE FRONT WIPER ARM HEAD CAPS a) Using a flat head thin-blade screwdriver, disengage the 3 claws, and remove the 2 head caps. 2. REMOVE THE FRONT WIPER ARM AND BLADE ASSEMBLY a) Remove 2 nuts, and remove the front wiper arm and blade assembly LH and RH. b) Mark and store the removed nuts in the replacement parts box, etc., so they will not be reused. DO NOT reuse the removed nuts. They should be stored separately from NEW nuts because they appear identical. 9

11 C. REMOVE THE SERRATION PATTERN FROM THE WIPER ARM PIVOT HOLE 1. PAINT OUT THE SERRATION PATTERN a) Color out the entire serration pattern with a black marker pen. Ensure there are no gaps. The paint is used to determine how much of the serration pattern remains after usage of the tool. 2. REMOVE THE SERRATION PATTERN FROM THE WIPER ARM PIVOT HOLE a) Put a shop cloth on a workbench, and support the wiper arm with the other hand. b) Insert the tip of the serration removal tool into the wiper arm pivot hole, and set the guide. c) Pressing the serration removal tool against the wiper arm pivot hole, twist it 2 to 3 times to remove the serration pattern. Maintain a position that prevents the tip of the serration removal tool from touching the work bench. DO NOT support the wiper arm by the wiper blade. Twisting direction does not matter. The Guide on the tool is to prevent excessive side to side motion of the tool when in use. The serration removal tool has a stopper that controls reaming to within the correction limit. This operation MUST be performed with the wiper arm on a bench to ensure enough pressure is applied to the tool. 10

12 d) After twisting 2 to 3 times, check the wiper arm pivot hole and compare the condition with the table below. Judgment Criteria Result and Action OK Go to the next step (e). All the paint is gone. (The serration pattern is removed evenly.) The paint is not all gone. (The serration pattern is not fully removed.) NG Trim until all the paint is gone. If you are unable to get rid of the serration pattern after repeated attempts, replace the wiper arm with a new one. Reuse the wiper blade. Go to SECTION D: CLEAN THE WIPER PIVOT SHAFT SPLINE. e) Wear protective goggles, and use an air duster to clean the wiper arm hole and its surroundings. 11

13 D. CLEAN THE WIPER PIVOT SHAFT SPLINE 1. CLEAN THE WIPER PIVOT SHAFT SPLINE a) Protect the cowl louver around the wiper pivot shaft with tape or shop cloth. b) Using a wire brush, clean out the splines from the right and left wiper pivot shafts. Clean the splines of the wiper pivot shafts to prevent wiper arm slippage. c) Wear protective goggles, and use an air duster to clean the wiper pivot shaft and its surroundings. d) Remove the tape/ shop cloth. e) Clean the windshield. 12

14 E. INSTALL THE FRONT WIPER ARM AND BLADE ASSEMBLY 1. INSTALL THE FRONT WIPER ARM AND BLADE ASSEMBLY Always use a NEW nut when installing the wiper arm and blade assembly. a) Ensuring that the distance from the blade tip to the louver lip comes within the range given in the table, install the front wiper arm and blade assembly LH and RH with 2 NEW nuts. Torque Specification: 22 N m (224 kgf cm, 16 ft lbf) Holding the arm hinge section by hand, tighten a nut. Driver Seat Side: Area Measurement A 15 to 30 mm (0.59 to 1.18 in.) Passenger Seat Side: Area Measurement B 16 to 31 mm (0.63 to 1.22 in.) b) Pouring water or washer fluid over the glass, activate the front wipers to check that they operate smoothly without any interference between the wiper blades and the body. c) Stop the front wipers, and raise the wiper arms 2 times. d) Check that each of the wiper blade tips is within the range given in the table. Driver Seat Side: Area Measurement A 15 to 30 mm (0.59 to 1.18 in.) Passenger Seat Side: Area Measurement B 16 to 31 mm (0.63 to 1.22 in.) 13

15 2. INSTALL THE FRONT WIPER ARM HEAD CAPS a) Engage the 3 claws to install the 2 wiper arm head caps. 14
