5 .0 INTRODUCTION.. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The PR20 Ink Printer is standard on the following MPS models: 630, 650, 6 330, 6350, 6530, 6550, 6730, 6750, and come with the printer already attached. If you purchased a printer after the delivery of your MPS machine as an add-on option, you must install the unit. CAUTION: Before attempting any procedure provided in this manual it is mandatory that the MPS has been de-energized and locked out. 6 2.0 INSTALLATION & REMOVAL Tools Required. Philips Head Screwdriver 2. Allen Key Number of Persons Needed 2. INSTALLATION ) Remove the cover plates and spacers with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove FIGURE - ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS Page 3
7 2) Remove and replace the pressure bars indicated in Figure 2 with an Allen key. 3) Loosen the mounting posts, but do not remove. Replace Remove FIGURE - 2 4) Slide the printer over the post. The assembly should sit firmly on the rails. 5) Tighten the mounting posts. Make sure the drive pulley engages the in-feed belt. Embosser Mounting Posts FIGURE 3 ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS Page 4
8 6) Attach the trigger on the back rail, before the embosser, using any of the series of holes present. The trigger must be set in the correct position to emboss the bag at the right moment. See section 3.2 for procedure. 2.2 REMOVAL ) Before removing the printer, disconnect the photo eye or micro switch. 2) Loosen the socket head cap screws located in the mounting posts with an Allen key. It is not necessary to remove the screws. 3) The printer will easily lift off. 4) Replace the mounting posts and covers. 3.0 OPERATION Before you begin using the ER20, you must complete these steps: ) Set the type 2) Set the emboss position 3. SETTING & CHANGING THE TYPE To lot or date code your package, characters must be present in the printing wheel. This is accomplished by first removing the printing wheel, then loading the desired characters. ) Use procedure 2.2 to remove the printer. 2) Looking at the printer from an inverted position you will see the printing device. See Figure 4 for details. 3) To change the type, please refer to page 5 in Appendix A - Markem Imaje Manual, and follow the stated instructions. ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS Page 5
9 Printer Drive Gear Backup Roller Adj. Knob FIGURE SETTING THE PRINT POSITION ) VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT Vertical adjustment of the printed code is achieved by repositioning the print wheel. Loosen the set screw located on the print wheel with an Allen key, the wheel will slide freely along the shaft, thereby repositioning the code vertically on your bag. Ensure the backup roller is also moved the same amount as the print wheel. 2) HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT Horizontal adjustment of the printed code is achieved by repositioning the triggering mechanism. Depending upon your order, the PR20 will have either a micro switch or photoeye mechanism. ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS Page 6
10 The micro switch is fixed to the back side of the rails. There is no need to remove the unit for this adjustment. By firmly holding the base of the arm stationary, you will be able to bend the free end of the arm quite easily. This repositions the trigger, thereby allowing different horizontal placement of the embossed code on the bag. The photo-eye is also fixed to the back side of the rails. This unit may be repositioned to adjust the horizontal placement of the embossed code. 3.3 ADJUSTING THE PRINTING PRESSURE The pressure exerted on the type holder by the backup wheel will determine the clarity of the print on the bag. If the backup wheel is too close to the type holder the bag will be embossed by the type and the print will not be clear. If your MPS sealer is validatable another known issue is when the machine reverses, ink will be transferred to the backup roller causing both sides of the bag to be printed on. There should be about clearance between the backup roller and the type holder at all times for best performance. This pressure can be adjusted via the adjustment knob shown in figure 4. Follow this procedure to adjust the pressure. ) Back the pressure off completely so that no print is transferred to the bag. 2) While the machine is running slowly increase the pressure by tightening the adjustment knob until you are satisfied witht the print clarity. 3) If the bag is being embossed by the type holder and the print is unclear there is too much pressure and it must be backed off.
