1 Need, Strategy and Implementation of ERTMS A contribution to interoperability, capacity enhancement and safety in Switzerland Jan Richard Strategy Manager ERTMS SBB Infrastructure

3 Background and History The reasons for ETCS in Switzrland The concept Bahn 2000 and other new lines need speeds >= 200 km/h. The law for railway traffic dictate a CAB signalling system for speeds > 160 km/h. An evaluation in the 90 s of different CAB signalling systems proposes to use ERTMS (ETCS Level 2) as CAB signalling system for Switzerland. Strategy 2002 foresees the implementation of ETCS L2 till 2015 for the core network. Planned investments of about MCHF 830. Strategy 2006 foresees a network wide implementation of ETCS till Planned investment of about MCHF 300 ETCS L1 Limited Supvervision! 3

4 Background and History Key Driving Factors for the Strategy 2006 Renewal RU benefit Interoperability Operation ETCS The former ATP systems are getting obsolete and have to be replaced respecting signalling philosophy and investments Fastest possible transition to «ETCSonly» onboard equipment (avoiding STM s / double equipment) Interoperability on the North-/South corridor Rotterdam-Genua to be achieved until 2012 / Higher speed, shorter headways and need for capacity increase requires cab-signalling and traffic management systems. 4

15 Summary ETCS in Switzerland ETCS Level 2 did confirm it s operational fitness and performance by 2007 Switzerland provide references in ERTMS applications (headway km/h) for conventional rail The key investments (almost 600 vehicles fitted) have been done. Customer oriented migration strategy with the mode Level 1 Limited Supervision enables at least technical interoperability SBB gained significant know-how about ERTMS and is committed to the future development of the system Regarding operational harmonisation and functioinality a next baseline will be needed. 15
