2 Messina has one of most important Italian harbour in south Mediterranean It has two harbour: one sited in historic city centre that is dedicated to cruise ship; another one out side of city centre dedicated only for commercial transport. In Messina there are three Research Centres of Research about: Renewable energies; Innovative materials; Marine environment.

3 City of Messina - The Tram or Cityway Started: 2004 Line: 7,4 km Cost: 77 M Co-funded by EU In addition to have a modern system of electric mobility, the realization of this infrastructure was an opportunity to retrain some parts of the city.

4 The line develops along the city (from south to north) and intercepts the main points where arrive bus lines down from the quarters of the west side. But the line intercepts to the main points where is the railway station and harbour, pubblic administration office, university. We call this model as "connecting as comb. N

5 Currently, there are available only 9 tramcars for 190 rides/day. Time to complete a ride (7,4 km) is 50 min. Average speed for a ride 8,8 km/h Pro: Green public transport that replaced in the urban centre the ordinary bus with diesel engine; High capacity means of transport. Con: Low speed caused by much interferences and no efficient system of traffic lights; High costs for maintenance.

6 City of Messina Metro Railway Started: 2009 Line: 16 km Cost: 30 M Funded by EU The project is been developed by Municipality of Messina and RFI (Italian Rail Net). The core of the project is to use the existent railway for a suburban service for City and Province of Messina.

7 City of Messina Metro Railway The line has 10 stops. Every stops has a large car park to enhance multi-modal mobility model.

8 City of Messina Escalator Work in progress (tests and legal authorizations) Cost: Funded by Ministry of Environment It s a pilot project to facilitate the links between two near parts of the city separated by high gap level. Sometimes the citizen takes its cars to reach the city center even if it is near their houses. It is happens because there is an high difference of altitude to clear.

9 City of Messina Escalator In cities like Messina with many parts near the city center separated by high difference of altitude this mobility solution could be very interesting. Installation of escalator terminated in 2007 From that year we re waiting for test and authorizations by central approbation body Unfortunately when an escalator is installed in a public open space for our legal framework it is considered like a tram and is requested very strict safety condition of use.

10 Initiative coordinated at a European level to purchase a significant number of vehicles characterized by low (LEV) and zero (ZERO) emissions into the atmosphere (electric, natural gas, biogas, LPG, etc.) and the creation of the necessary infrastructure The project saw the participation of the cities of Palermo, Stockholm, Athens, Helsinki, London, Bremen and Luxembourg. 11 City of Palermo ZEUS Zero and low Emission vehicles in Urban Society According with other partners the project focused on two specific electric vehicles FIAT 600 Elettra CITROEN Berlingo They was purchased: n. 88 electric cars for passenger transport n. 7 electric min van for transport of goods A service for car-sharing was started coupled with a large traffic limited zone in urban centre.

12 City of Palermo ZEUS Zero and low Emission vehicles in Urban Society The charging infrastructure for electric vehicles built. Some infrastructures are simply electricity supply points within municipal buildings and municipal companies. Other infrastructures were installed to complete the parking areas for the vehicles of the car-sharing service. These feature a photovoltaic canopy. Photovoltaic panels produce electricity that is sent to the mains to accrue a "credit" of energy usable to recharge the electric vehicles.

13 RESULTS 1. This is some of most important experiences for sustainable mobility with electric means in Sicily 2. Ideas don t miss but unfortunately a strict legal framework and/or heavy burocracy stops the best practices 3. Policies must be improved for support sustainable urban mobility not alone with disburse of fund but especially with law and rules that must support a behaviour change in citizen 4. It s important to focus how sustainable mobility can support the economic development for create new economy then the sustainable prices for innovative vehicles and means.
