Welcome to September. This month is a little different, this month the meeting is on the FOURTH Saturday at the usual place and time. The meeting has been moved back to the fourth Saturday because Nordicon is on the third Saturday. For Nordicon information and directions check the TCAH web site. I hope to see a lot of you at Nordicon because they can really use your support. September is the club Swap Meet so dig out all those kits you want send to a new home or to someone else s shelf of doom. You might get a shock and find that old kit might just get built by the next guy. Now a quick note about the August meeting. It was a small turn out but, I thought a very enjoyable meeting and I would like to thank Bill Read and Bob Maderich for giving the weathering demo. I think for next years club racing build for the contest, an After the Race or a weathered build is worth thinking about. Thanks Bill and Bob. Now on to my build log for the month, well things have been better for my getting things moving. I am back working on my Ebbro 1/20 scale, 1967 Lotus 49 which now has decals on it. Having been asked a couple times about the decals I will give you my option for what it is worth. First to set the stage the Ebbro kit is going together with very few issues and I have used Tamiya spray can British Racing Green applied with an airbrush. As most of you know this is a dark green and the Lotus 49 in 1967 has a yellow stripe and white number boards. Which brings up the question, will the decals show the green through them? The quick answer is the Ebbro decals which are printed by Cartograf in Italy are up to the challenge and stay white and yellow when applied. The other major question is how well will the decals conform to the compound curves. I found that the only decal that is a challenge is the main nose stripe. You will need to slice the decal a fair bit to get it to bend around the intake lip but, it does react well to decal solvent. At times the decals seem a bit thick but, they snug down well and are strong enough to push around. Would I use them again? If you are building for a contest you will want to spray the yellow yourself. If you are building for fun and enjoyment use the decals. They are really very good. One thing to note, there are six silver dzus fittings on a separate decal sheet, watch out when using these they do not move. Make sure you get them in the right place first time. continued page 2

2 Model of the Month... built by Chris VIck The model of the month this month is brought to us once again by the Blue Oval Juggernaut, Chris Vick. Chris brought with him to August s meeting the Revell 1957 Ford Fireball Roberts NAS- CAR. This dirt track Ford was wearing Tamiya Bright Red over Pure White, which was then covered with some Testors Clear Lacquer, and given a mild wet sanding and buffing. Chris then went about adding a few extra details to the body, starting at the front of the car, a grill screen was added, a hood bungee cord, and a washer hose for the wiper. As he worked his way toward the rear, a bolt on plate that helped keep the doors shut as they went roundy round was added. He also added a chrome trim piece that was missing between the windows, and a tip onto the chrome trim. The rear of the car includes additions of towing lights on the fender tops, a bungee cord to restrain the trunk, and exhaust tips out through the tail lights. The engine in this one, as was the interior, were built box stock with the only addition being ignition wiring. The chassis was also built box stock with the exception of some surgery on the exhaust system. This included removing the mufflers, and rerouting the tailpipes to the aforementioned tail light exits. This build represents the car that was raced at the Ashville-Weaverville track in Whenever you get a chance, take the time to check out this fine example of a vintage NASCAR. A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT... continued... Now, a word about silver. There are a lot of shades of bare metal in a Lotus 49 and I have been using a lot of brands and shades with mixed results. All of them look pretty good but some leave silver dust on your fingers when you handle them and this shows up quite clearly on British Racing Green. Well, one odd silver paint I tried and like is Brush n Leaf this is a liquid form of Rub n Buff. I got it off ebay. I airbrush it thinned with a bit of lacquer thinner and it gives an almost chrome silver finish that is very hard and non-buffing. It can be tinted with lacquer or enamel paint. Now with that said the package warns not too spray it. But with a mask and a spray booth how bad is it? I do not know but a lot of things model builds do are not strictly the best for your health. With that warning said, it does produce a bright shiny silver that is durable in a way most silvers are not. See you at the meeting on the FOURTH Saturday. Bob.

3 On The Table... by Mark Rollie & Bob Maderich Steven Helfman brought in his WIP of a Revell 09 Dodge Challenger, which had required a lot of scratchbuilding for the version he was building which was based on one of the cars in the FAST FIVE movie. A good turnout for this month s On The Table, with the theme of Works in Progress and who among us doesn t have more than one WIP waiting for its time on the bench again? The library room may not have been able to hold all of us if we brought everything! Among those who did bring something in was Clint Williams, who started out with his WIP Lotus #29 Indy car, which was a glue bomb that Clint is restoring for the 65 & Older Kits club contest. Indycals will be used to finish. Clint had brought along a box of crap which contained 2 complete cars, and then there was the unique (to say the least) fusion of a Studebaker and an aircraft carrier (!) which he called the Studeliner, and to go even further features a Lambo engine! A milder (?) custom of Clint s was the WIP project that was going the Deal s Wheels route with a Testarosa, using the Trans Um Tirebird as a donor kit for the wheels & tires. Showing no shortage of WIP projects, Clint also had the Revell BMW 320I which now has a Chevy V8 from a NASCAR car and scratchbuilt twin-turbos; and then there were the 2 Mustangs, based on Monogram IMSA cars. 1st was a Pikes Peak car, and the 2nd an SCCA car which used parts from an foreign Opel kit. A couple of resin projects were next up from Randy Metts, consisting of an 54 Mercury body and using a 53 Ford chassis, and a 53 Ford Thunderbird with inspiration from Jimmie Vaughn. A frame from a Lindberg kit is being used, and requiring lots of modification to lower it. We also saw the return of the Johan Superbird from Larry Reasland, a WIP that was using the chassis from a Super Bee kit instead of the original Johan chassis, because of better detail; the Johan kit has a everything-molded-on chassis. Larry s other WIP was an AMT Rusty Wallace Grand Prix NASCAR kit, with the body work done and the chassis work just started. The new generation of builders was represented by Vincent Halliday (who had a little assist from dad & granddad), with his builds of the AMT Gravedigger and Hulk monster trucks, the AMT Ford GT90 concept car, and the Polar Lights Willys reissue of the SnapDraggins kit. Toby Halliday s WIP was his Tamiya Porsche 962C LeMans car, which will be using a PE set for extra detail, and Studio 97 decals. The finish will be Tamiya Camel Yellow. Extra work included opening up the louvers on the body. For the second half of this months OTT... continued page 4

4 Modern Muscle... by Steve Helfman Some would say that the age of the muscle car has long past and nothing noteworthy has come from the Big Three since after the mid 1970 s. Others tend to disagree and say that right now is the golden age of the modern muscle car. Whatever one s opinion, it is hard to disagree with the later when one can stroll into a Chevy, Dodge, or Ford dealership, plunk down some cash and drive away with a vehicle producing well over 500 horsepower. Also, if that amount just seems just too tame, some tuner shops can take that vehicle and with a few tweaks here and there, turn it into an absolute monster on four wheels. My model will be a loosely based interpretation of Classic Design Concepts Group 2 Widebody Challenger. The Novi, Michigan based company has been adding its visual touch to cars since 1990 usually offering tuning and appearance packages to Mustangs. CDC s inspiration for their Widebody 2 Challenger comes from Mopar models past. The overall theme of the car comes from a variety of 1970 s Chrysler race cars. Two of the most noticeable visual cues are the rear quarter panel extensions and the Shaker hood & scoop, which have a direct link to the 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. Along with various appearance packages that are stylish as well as functional, CDC also amps up the power appropriately. They offer packages that bump the standard car s 425 horsepower up to 575 by way of either turbo or supercharging. To get all that power to the ground, along with a comprehensive update of the suspension, they widened the rear quarter panels and made it possible to stuff wide 335 series tires under them. An available Baer brake package ensures the car can stop as well as it goes. CDC s Challenger has even had its place on the silver screen starring in both of the latest Fast & Furious movies being the vehicle of choice for actor Vin Diesel. For my model, I decided to replicate those rear quarter panel extensions by using an existing additional body and cutting and forming those panels. I then created custom decals for the HEMI signage for those extensions. I also found a Pegasus wheel and tire kit that closely resembles the actual car. The infamous Shaker hood & scoop comes from Mike Dowd s resin company. From the parts box came the brakes, turbocharger and plumbing. I also scratchbuilt the engine shroud the scoop sits on. As this model is still a work in progress, I still have to finish assembling the engine and getting the Shaker scoop to poke through the hood appropriately. There is also of course the final painting, sanding & polishing the body, adjusting the ride height of the model and finalizing the interior assembly. Finally, I have to glue it all together and hope it resembles the vision I had when I thought up this cool project of mine.

5 On the Table... continued... The theme this month was in progress, so how many tables would we need?? But seriously, Mark and I split this bounty up, so here goes my half of the table: Erik Zabel gave us two of his current projects. The first is the old 1/16 scale 64 1/2 Mustang that he is building for his brother. The other car was a 62 Ford Fairlane that he is making from a promo for another friend. Bob Maderich II had his ATF themed car on the table. It was a Racing 43 Porsche 911 rally car, that was sponsored by Gitane cigarettes. He also had his 50 Olds that is being made into the Pan-America car. Chris Vick gave us one of the new 57 Ford s, but you can read more about this in the Model of the Month feature. Bob Halliday ventured down to share his 68 Plymouth Road Runner that he is building. He is adding Johan wheels, Keith Marks decals, Revell engine, and Modelhaus tires to this factory stock build. Bill Johanneck had a 72 Chevy Nova Pro-Street (in primer), and a 66 Olds Cutlass sport wagon to show us. Andy Martin is converting one of the Fujimi Porsche 356 s to the original Gmund coupe. This was his inprogress offering, along with the VW Beetle Bus that he is reworking as a Chevy engined drag car. Bill Read certainly had the biggest model on the table, a Ford F-350 Limousine! He used Big Foot detail parts and had done lots of scratchbuilding on this beast. And finally Hugh Heidt was hiding some of his projects away, but we found them. They included a Target Indy car (made from the Tamiya 1/20 kit), the 70 Chaparral Camaro from the Trans-Am series, and another Trans-Am car, the Mercury Merkur. You generally expect an F1 car to be more impressive than the one you re seeing here. However, this F1 is not what it appears to be. This little replica was created in just four minutes at the Vienna University of Technology using the world s fastest 3D printer. The vehicle measures just a mere 0.285mm in length. That means you could park 2 nose to nose in the width of a pencil line! These spectacular hedges cut like a Formula1 car and pit lane mechanics will set the hearts of any motoring fan racing. Gardeners at the Williams F1 headquarters spend hours every month trimming their topiary.
