1 Right On Replicas, LLC Step-by-Step Review * HUMVEE 1:25 Scale Revell SnapTite Model Kit # Review This is a replica of the Humvee which is also known as the Hummer and the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). The Humvee was developed for the Army in 1979 and has been in production since The Humvee was created to replace several older vehicles in the Army. In 1992 a civilian Humvee version was released due to its popularity amongst the civilians and off roaders. The Humvee has heavy duty springs, a 8 cylinder diesel engine, four wheel fully independent suspension, a four speed transmission and a central tire inflation system. The Humvee was designed with a low center of gravity, a 72 inch track width, and a 16 inch ground clearance. With the snorkel kit the Humvee can ford up to 60 inches of water. The top speed for the Humvee is 65 mph. the United States Army has several variations of the Humvee depending on what mission or job it is needed for. For the modeler: This is the Revell kit 1970 that is 1: 25 scale, and a Skill Level 1. Revell released this kit before (dates unknown) and now Revell brings it back in I have found five other versions of the 1:25 Humvee the last three of which are a civilian version; Revell 1909 Wheels of Fire Military Humvee, Revell 1939 Easy Kit Humvee, Revell 7110 Easy Kit Hummer, Revell 1907 SnapTite Hummer, and Revell 1938 Hummer H1.The pieces are molded in desert tan, clear, black vinyl tires with sticker decals. There are 35 pieces to this kit and very well laid out instructions. Finished dimensions are; 7½ L X 3½ W X 4½ H.

2 Figure 3700 Here is the box art for this kit. This Step-by-Step review will examine the basic construction of this kit. It will also explore a few ways to do simple camouflage that can be done both on military vehicles and civilian vehicles. Unless stated differently Testors Model Cement in the tube and Testors Enamel paint in the bottle was used for the construction of this model kit. Figure 3701 The seats, interior, dashboard, and steering wheel are spray painted Model Master Modern Desert Sand. The seats are detailed with Model Master Faded Olive Drab (Brush painted). The dashboard and steering wheel are detailed with Testors Semi Gloss Black using a #000 paint brush. The seats are painted with model master faded olive drab. The dashboard is detailed with Testors semi gloss black and. The steering wheel is Testors semi gloss black. Figure 3701 Gather the parts for the interior pan.

3 Figure 3702 The four seats are snapped into the interior piece. Figure 3703 The steering wheel is attached to the dashboard and then the dashboard assembly is installed into the interior.

4 Figure 3704 The body is spray painted Model Master Modern Desert Tan The headlight bezels are painted Testors Silver to add detail. The windshield and headlights are installed into the body.

5 Figure 3706 and Figure 3707 The interior assembly is installed into the body assembly. Figure 3708 and The chassis and the four springs are spray painted Model Master Modern Desert Sand. The four springs are detailed with Testors Semi Gloss Black.

6 Figure 3709 The four springs are attached to the chassis. Figure 3710 and Figure 3711 The four inner wheels and four outer wheels are spray painted Model Master Modern Desert Sand. The following process is done four times; the inner wheel is installed into the tire. The outer wheel is installed into the tire and snapped to the inner wheel. The following process is done two times; the metal axle is installed into the inner wheel. (A small hammer might be needed however gently tap the metal axle in so as to not damage the inner wheels.)

7 Figure 3712 and Figure 3713 The metal axle portion is slid through the axle hole on the chassis assembly and the wheel assembly is attached to it. The chassis assembly is installed into the body assembly and two screws are used to secure the two assemblies together. A Phillips screw driver is needed for this portion of the assembly. Figure 3714 The right and left halves of the missile launcher and missile launcher top are painted Model Master Olive Drab. The antenna and brush guard are spray painted Model Master Modern Desert Sand.

8 Figure 3715 The brush guard, missile launcher assembly and antenna are attached to the Humvee assembly. The antenna is detailed with Model Master Flat Black. The front turn signals and front reflectors are painted Tamiya Acrylic Clear Orange.

9 Figure 3716 The tail lights and rear reflectors are painted Model Master Acryl Clear Red. Figure 3717 The decal sheet is inaccurate because the military does not camouflage desert vehicles like they do the woodland camouflaged vehicles. I wanted to use the private symbols so I traced them onto some wax paper and put masking tape over the symbols. After carefully cutting out the stencils the masking tape is peeled off and applied to the HUMVEE. The HUMVEE is then painted Model Master Flat Black where the stencils are.

10 Figure 3718a The HUMVEE is detailed with Testors Rust (rims), Testors Steel (lug nuts), Testors Aluminum ( parts of the body), and Model Master Interior Flat Tan (parts of body). Tamiya Weathering Master Set A (sand and light sand) is applied to the body and tires. The flat tan application represents where the body was repainted in the field due to repairs or removing markings since it is impossible to get spray paint that matches factory paint at deployment sites, this mismatch is intentional. Woodland Camouflage: Figure 3720 The sticker decals are the wrong color schematic so the pattern is traced on wax paper then masking tape is applied to the wax paper for the stencil templates.

11 Figure 3721 Here a HUMVEE body is spray painted Krylon Camouflage Olive Drab before the masking tape template is applied. Figure 3722 The body is then brush painted Model Master Military Brown. Figure 3723 and Figure 3724 Another form of masking I found in a model car magazine is the use of silly putty. Here silly putty is strategically placed and the body is painted Model Master Flat Black.

12 Figure 3725 Here are the results of both the masking tape and the silly putty. There are some areas that need touched up however this is a very easy fix and the end results are very impressive.

13 Figure 3726 and Figure 3727 The front and sides of the HUMVEE is camouflaged one-third (freehand). I first painted the Model Master Military Brown in patterns close to the HUMVEE I drive at work. This is followed by Model Master Flat Black in the same format. Figure 3728 The camouflaged HUMVEE is assembled just like the Desert Tan one however Krylon Camouflage Olive Drab is used on the interior, seats, dash board, four springs, and missile launcher assembly. The brush guard and antenna are painted Model Master Flat Black.

14 Figure 3729 Here are both versions of the HUMVEE and either way they do look great. Conclusion: I found this kit really fun to build and in my opinion it is something that would be great in anybody s collection. From the young just learning to build to the adult seasoned builder this is a very fun project. During this build I did not find any flash, cold shuts, warpage or any other defects. The instructions are very well laid out with very excellent detail. This is a really good build that will work in anybody s collection especially the military collectors. Due to it being 1:25th scale it will also work in dioramas of civilian car builders as well. I would definitely build this kit again.
