2 NEWSLETTER Presidents Message Greetings model people! I write this on New Year's Eve after returning from Hub where Bob, Bill, Eric and I had a rather informal meeting. We were all in top form" (or bottom form, depending on your point of view, I guess). First off I would like to thank you for electing me as your president, I promise to do my best at guiding our club. Furthermore, I would like to thank you for electing Toby as Vice President. I like his enthusiasm, and he fits right into my platform of getting newer and younger members involved in the leadership roles of the club! Here are some of the plans we would like to institute in the coming year: Besides getting more people involved, there have been a lot of requests for bringing back How-To demonstrations. Andy has volunteered to be our Demonstration Coordinator. That means that not only will he do a demo or two, but he will also be out there twisting a few arms to get some of you to volunteer for this task. We have a lot of talented builders in this club, and we think it would be helpful to share their techniques at the meetings. Please see Andy if you would like to volunteer for this. Also we are going to bring back 'Motorsports Updates' as part of the regular meetings. These updates will consist of driver changes, race results, injury updates, Bernies latest scam, which drivers have the hottest girlfriends, and general info about the particular racing series covered. Mark Egge will do F1, Torben= NASCAR, Jim Kampmann= NHRA, Bill=Endurance (Le Mans), and finally, Chad will do Moto GP. Another segment that might be beneficial is What ya working on? We can go around the room and ask builders what they are currently working on, and if they have any questions, concerns, etc. This segment will probably have to wait until we have some meetings that don't already have a full agenda, since going around the room is likely to take up a significant amount of time. At the upcoming January meeting, we will have to discuss themes for the 2012 meetings. I want to thank Don for agreeing to take over the club website. In today's cyber-age, I strongly believe this is one of the most valuable tools we have for promoting our club and drawing new members. In order for it to reach its full potential we need to keep it updated with fresh information. I don t expect Don to do it all, so please see him if you would like to submit a kit review, car or model show update, or even a good joke or picture. Don t worry.if you don t volunteer and I feel you should, I will be talking to you! We have discussed this before, but I think it bears repeating one last time.we are a Model Building Club! Although we focus on racing car models, please feel free to bring any type of model you want to build with you to any meeting! We have voted on this before, and this decision has been made by the majority. Furthermore, we are an IPMS Chapter whose rules indicate that we must accept all types of models. (Continued on Page 3)! 3 Official club events will focus on racing cars, but we invite anyone to bring and talk about any model they wish at the meetings. Also, if individual members want to have their own informal build challenges between themselves, that is fine too! (Unless its those dumb show cars! LOL! Sorry, just kidding). One final note I plan to be very honest and open, so if anybody has a concern they would like to discuss with me in private or during a meeting please feel free to do so. Having said that, I want you to realize that every decision I make will be based on what the majority of the club wants. I will not make changes or decisions based on the ramblings of just a few members. Also I have no problem contacting members to get their thoughts when I am not sure of something. So, in a nutshell I am saying: I will listen to everyone with an open mind, but will only act in the majority interest. That s all I have for now! See you at the meeting! Scott Vice Presidents Message - As we head into the New Year, I would like to welcome everyone to There are really two things that I would like to go over in my first submission to the RPM newsletter. The first, and foremost, is to thank everyone that voted for me in the recent election. I look forward to becoming more involved in the club, and definitely getting to know everyone better. With the New Year, and the new officers in the club, that leads me to the second thing I would like to cover. This year, I would encourage everyone to try something new, or at least re-visit something you may not have done for a very long time. It could be something as simple as going to a new show, or contest, or helping to judge at one of the contest s that the club judges. I especially encourage everyone to build in a genre that is new to them. I know in the short time that I have been in the club; one of the greatest benefits that I see is the diversity of subject matter that is built. This really makes trying something new a lot less intimidating. It seems that no matter what you want to build, someone in the club is building it, has built it, or has screwed it up, and they are willing to tell you about it. While none of these things seem like a big deal, I think it is really one of the things that attract new members. I encourage new members to take advantage of the resources within the club, and remind the members that have been in the club for an extended time, to not take this benefit for granted. That is all I have for now. I may chime in once in a while; unless I am too busy trying to keep Scott from wearing underwear on his head at the meetings! 4 On the Table by Mark Rollie December rolls around and another year winds down, and time to sit back, relax, and look back at what 2011 has brought and to look forward to what the New Year may bring. Its also time for one last RPM gathering of the year and to munch away at pizza, and to hold once again the club s White Elephant gift exchange. Next up was Scott Harvieux s Revell Ferrari 599 GTB, the 1 st Ferrari on the table and (oddly enough) the brand that dominated the gift exchange (must have been some clearance specials going on). This month s On The Table has a mixture of completed White Elephant gifts and other builds. Jim Allen starts off with Lindberg s 64 Dodge Super Stock Maverick, which he painted with an automotive lacquer, and with parts like the motor & tires robbed from a Revell hot rod kit, the Chrysler wheels from a Charger kit, and Model King decals. Jim s second car was his Shirley Shahan 67 Plymouth, making a return visit to the table. Torben Rothgeb had swiped the engine & wheels from a Firebird kit for his Revell Austin gasser, which was finished with Tamiya Clear Red over Tamiya Gold and then glossed with Future. Cameron Jamison s Tamiya Honda JACCS Accord looked pretty sharp, no small part due to the decals, but it s those same decals that Cameron said were awfully difficult to apply and for a variety of reasons. For myself, White Elephant kits from the past were placed out. 1 st up is the Heller 1/43 F1 Benetton car, a simple kit where half the parts count are for the wheel assemblies, and with decals that leave a lot to be desired. 2 nd was a WIP Elephant, Revell s 32 Ford 5-window Coupe and going the Highboy route. Paint scheme is based on a real car spotted at the Back to the 50s show, and using Testor s Bronze and PlastiKote French Country Yellow. Under Don Stadick s hands the Lindberg Little Red Wagon became a Little Green Monster, the offspring of what would happen if the LRW mated with a monster tractor. Parts from the AMT Orange Blossum were used, along with the engine from the AMT TMNT monster truck, and with plenty of scratch-building to follow the project took 3 months to complete. (continued)! 5 On the Table Continued... Jim Mulligan kept it simple by introducing his Revell 49 Mercury and left it at that, letting the work speak for itself. Bob Ferreira s Tamiya McLaren MP4/7 was mostly built out of the box, with the addition of seat belts and a few aftermarket parts, with paint from MCW. And to wrap up this month s group, Bob Maderich ends with 3 to show off. First is his Revell of Germany (actually a reboxed Hasegawa kit) Porsche 956 Jagermeister, which Bob used Zero Paints for the first time on, cleared with Future, and used DMC decals. Next was a comparison with the Revell and Tamiya versions of the Ferrari 360 Modena and noting the slight differences between the two, even tho both are listed at the same scale 1/24 th. Bill Read noted that his Revell Corvette Z06 had 6 coats of clear applied over the paint and then polished down for the super-shiny sheen.
