1 Rear strut assembly - Removal and installation Preceding operations: Drain hydraulic system ( ). Operation no. of operation texts and work units or standard texts and flat rates A. Model 129 Luggage compartment trim panels remove, install. The spring link must be supported if the vehicle is not resting on its road wheels.
2 Hexagon nuts at upper mount (5a) remove, install. Remove, install washer (5b) and rubber bushing (5c) (Position 2). When installing, torque the lower hexagon nut (5a) to 25 Nm, then lock with upper hexagon nut (5a), 25 Nm. Ensure that the rubber bushing (5c) seats properly. Rear wheel remove, install. Torque lug bolts to 110 Nm. Roll-over bar switch (S83/2, S83/3) remove, install (Position 4). High-pressure line (P4) detach, reconnect. Tightening torque for banjo bolt (5v): 25 Nm. Hexagon bolts (72d) remove, install, remove spring link cover (72c), install (Position 7). Self-locking hexagon nut with washer (5n) remove, replace, install, 55 Nm. Remove, install hexagon bolt with washer (5r) (Position 7). Strut (5) extract, insert. Pull off, push on lower rubber bushing (5d) and plate (5e). Assemble with parts in correct positions (Position 8). Roll-over bar system Check to ensure correct operation (91-860). Special tool Note The spring struts also act as the rebound stop for the rear wheels. Therefore only detach the spring strut mounting when the vehicle is on its wheels or the spring link is supported. If the spring strut tube also turns when unscrewing the nuts, this can be held by hand in the wheel house.
3 Slacken rear wheel. Tighten wheel bolts, 110 Nm. Check function of roll-over bar system (91-860). The spring link must be supported if the vehicle is not resting on its road wheels. 2 Unscrew the hexagon nuts (5a), remove the washer (5b) and the upper rubber bushing (5c). Torque the lower hexagon nut to 25 Nm, then lock it with the upper hexagon nut, 25 Nm. Ensure that the rubber bushing (5c) seats properly. 3 Remove the rear wheel. 4 Remove the roll-over bar switch (S83/2, S83/3).
4 5 Disconnect the high-pressure line (P4) from the strut. Torque banjo bolt to 25 Nm. 6 Unscrew the two hexagon bolts (72d) (arrows), then remove the spring link cover (72c). 7 Unscrew the self-locking hexagon nut (arrow), then remove the hexagon bolt together with its washer. Replace self-locking hexagon nut, 55 Nm.
5 8 Press the strut (5) downward and out of the support socket in the strut tower. Pull the strut from the spring link and then extract it to the rear. Installationn note Inspect the rubber bellows on the strut, checking for damage and cracks. Check the ball joint for excess resistance to movement, replace strut (5) as indicated. Check mounting components. 5 Strut 5r Hexagon bolt with washer 72 Spring link 9 Installation is in reverse sequence. B. Model 140
6 Luggage compartment lining remove, install. The vehicle must be on its wheels or the spring link must be supported. Self-locking hexagon nut on upper mount (5a) unscrew, replace, install, 40 Nm. Use Allen wrench (5 mm) to apply counterpressure at the strut mount (Position 2). Vehicle raise, lower ( ). Pressure line (P4) Bolts (72d) Self-locking nut (5n) detach, attach. M = 30 Nm. unscrew, screw in. Remove, refit spring link cover (72c) (No. 5). unscrew, screw on 100 Nm. Replace selflocking nut (5n). Remove, install bolt and washer (5r) (No. 6).
7 Spring strut (5) remove, install (No. 7). Special tool Note The spring struts also act as the rebound stop for the rear wheels. Therefore only detach the upper mounting when the vehicle is on its wheels or the spring link is supported. Removal, installation Remove luggage compartment lining. The vehicle must be on its wheels or the spring link supported. 2 Unscrew self-locking nut (5a) whilst holding the spring strut bearing in position using an Allan key WAF5 (arrow). Replace self-locking nut, 40 Nm. 3 Raise the vehicle ( ). Extend the strut until its mount is against the strut tower in the vehicle's floorpan.
8 4 Disconnect pressure line (P4) at the steel line/pressure hose connection (arrow) and seal line connections with suitable plugs. M = 30 Nm. Check line connections for leaks. 5 Unscrew four bolts (72d) and remove spring link cover (72c). 6 Unscrew self-locking nut (5n), and remove bolt and washer (5r). s Replace self-locking hexagon nut, 100 Nm.
9 7 Press spring strut (5) out downwards from the retainer bore in the frame floor. Remove spring strut from spring link and draw out rearwards. s Inspect the rubber bellows on the strut, checking for damage and cracks. Check the ball joint for excess resistance to movement, replace strut (5) as indicated. 5 Spring strut 5n Self-locking nut and washer 5r Bolt with washer 72 Spring link 8 Check attachment parts. 5 Spring strut 5a Self-locking nut 5n Self-locking nut and washer 5r Bolt and washer P4 Pressure line, accumulatorspring strut 9 Install in reverse sequence.
