Preparatory work Draining oil from rear wheel drive Installing rear wheel drive in retaining fixture Core activity (-) Removing nut from bevel pinion Secure lock (No ) of the retaining fixture so that it cannot turn in the release direction. Attention Heating the nut of the bevel-pinion shaft can result in damage to the shaft sealing ring. Always replace the shaft sealing ring of the bevel pinion if repair work necessitates slackening the nut on the bevelpinion shaft. Preheat nut (1) and remove it with socket wrench insert (No ). Release, pinion nut, rearwheel drive Clean the threads on the bevel pinion shaft. (-) Removing threaded ring from bevel pinion Remove threaded ring (1) with pin wrench socket adapter (No ). (-) Removing shaft sealing ring from bevel pinion

Page 2 of 5 Seat the threaded ring in support (No. 33 2 505). Use a screwdriver to drive shaft sealing ring (1) out of the threaded ring.

(-) Installing shaft sealing on bevel pinion Drive shaft sealing ring (1) into the threaded ring until seated with drift (No ). (-) Removing bevel pinion from final drive Heat the final-drive housing around the bearing. Install thread adapter (No ) and pull rod (No ) with impact weight (No ). Drive out the bevel-pinion shaft, taking care that the balls of the radial/thrust bearing do not drop out. Use a cloth to catch the balls if necessary. (-) Removing thrust ring for bevel pinion Position the bevel-pinion shaft support (No ). Heat thrust ring (1).

Page 3 of 5 Clamp thrust ring (1) with jaws (No. 00 7 504), adjusting screws (No. 00 7 505) and thrust spindle with yoke (No. 00 7 501) and remove. Remove O-ring (2).

(-) Installing thrust ring for bevel pinion Install O-ring (2). Heat thrust ring (1). 80 C Press on thrust ring (1) with bushing (No ) and thread adapter (No ). (-) Installing bevel pinion in rear-wheel drive Install thread adapter (No ). Attention The thickness of the shims between the housing and the radial/thrust bearing of the bevel pinion determines the tooth contact pattern. A shim of the wrong thickness will lead to an accelerated rate of wear and damage to components. Always ascertain the thickness of the shim when installing

Position bevel-pinion shaft (2) square to the bore and push it home quickly and without allowing it to tilt. Remove thread adapter (No ). Insert outer bearing race of radial/axial bearing (1) in the housing. (-) Installing threaded ring on bevel pinion To improve the sealing effect, install a threaded ring with larger groove diameter (a). Groove diameter, threaded ring 63.6 mm Seat sliding sleeve (No ) for threaded ring (1) on the bevel pinion shaft. Lightly oil the sealing lip of the shaft sealing ring. Consumables/lubricants Castrol SAF-XO Transmission oil Slip threaded ring (1) onto the sliding sleeve and tighten it with pin-wrench socket adapter (No ). Tightening torques Threaded ring
