Refer to Diagnostic Methods in General Information See: Vehicle > Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview for information about these practices. Refer to - Automatic Climate Control System for schematic and connector information. rmal Operation and Fault Conditions To rotate the temperature blend door actuator, the HVAC module supplies voltage and ground to the temperature blend door actuator through the door actuator motor circuits. To reverse the temperature blend door actuator rotation, the HVAC module reverses the voltage and ground circuits. The temperature blend door actuator feedback resistors are supplied a ground from the HVAC module by the temperature blend door actuator return circuits and a 5-volt reference voltage on the temperature blend door actuator reference circuits. The HVAC module reads the voltage on the temperature blend door actuator feedback circuits to determine the temperature blend door actuator position by the position of the actuator feedback resistor wiper arm. During an actuator calibration cycle, the HVAC module drives the temperature blend door until the door reaches both internal stops in the HVAC case. If the temperature blend door is temporarily obstructed or binding during a calibration cycle, the HVAC module may interpret this as the actual end of travel for the door. When this condition occurs and the HVAC module commands the actuator to its end of travel, the airflow may not be the expected temperature. DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 1/18

2 Possible Sources - Wiring, terminals or connectors - Temperature blend door actuator - Temperature blend door is binding or stuck - HVAC module - FCIM (Front Controls Interface Module) PINPOINT TEST O: TEMPERATURE CONTROL IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY - LH O1 CHECK THE HVAC MODULE FOR DTCs - Ignition ON. - Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test- HVAC Module. Are any DTCs present? 2/18

3 For DTC B1081:11, GO to O3. For DTC B1081:12, GO to O4. For DTC B1081:13, GO to O5. For DTC B11E5:11, GO to O7. For DTC B11E5:15, GO to O9. GO to O2. O2 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR OPERATION USING ACTIVE COMMANDS - Start the engine. - Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. - Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger- HVAC Module. - Select panel mode on the HVAC controls. - Select the highest blower motor setting. - Monitor airflow while using the scan tool to operate the HVAC module active command LEFT_BLEND, increasing and decreasing the percentage value. Does the airflow temperature change between warm and cold when the active command is changed? 4 INSPECT for broken linkage or door. REPAIR as necessary. If no condition is found, GO to O14. O3 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND - Ignition OFF. - Disconnect: LH Temperature Blend Door Actuator. - Disconnect: HVAC Module- DATC (Dual Automatic Temperature Control) C228A. - Measure the resistance between: 4/18

5 Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? GO to O6. REPAIR the circuit in question. O4 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE - Ignition OFF. - Disconnect: LH Temperature Blend Door Actuator. - Disconnect: HVAC Module- DATC (Dual Automatic Temperature Control) C228A. - Ignition ON. - Measure the voltage between: 5/18

6 Is any voltage present? REPAIR the circuit in question. GO to O6. O5 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN - Ignition OFF. - Disconnect: LH Temperature Blend Door Actuator. - Disconnect: HVAC Module- DATC (Dual Automatic Temperature Control) C228A. - Measure the resistance between: 6/18

7 Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? GO to O14. REPAIR the circuit in question. O6 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER - Ignition OFF. - Measure the resistance between: 7/18

8 Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? GO to O14. REPAIR the circuit. O7 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND - Ignition OFF. - Disconnect: LH Temperature Blend Door Actuator. 8/18

9 - Disconnect: HVAC Module- DATC (Dual Automatic Temperature Control) C228A. - Measure the resistance between: Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? GO to O8. REPAIR the circuit. O8 CHECK THE SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT 9/18

10 - Measure the resistance between: Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? GO to O14. REPAIR the circuits. O9 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 10/18

11 - Ignition OFF. - Disconnect: LH Temperature Blend Door Actuator. - Disconnect: HVAC Module- DATC (Dual Automatic Temperature Control) C228A. - Ignition ON. - Measure the voltage between: Is any voltage present? 11/18

12 REPAIR the circuits. GO to O10. O10 CHECK THE REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN - Ignition OFF. - Measure the resistance between: Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? GO to O /18

13 REPAIR the circuit. O11 CHECK THE REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT - Ignition OFF. - Measure the resistance between: Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? GO to O /18

14 REPAIR the circuits. O12 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN - Measure the resistance between: Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? GO to O13. REPAIR the circuit. O13 CHECK THE LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 14/18

15 - Measure the resistance between: Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? GO to O14. REPAIR the circuit. O14 CHECK FOR CORRECT LH TEMPERATURE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR OPERATION - Disconnect and inspect the temperature blend door actuator connector. - Repair: - corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) 15/18

16 - damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins - pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary - Reconnect the temperature blend door actuator connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. - Connect all HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. - Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? INSTALL a new LH temperature blend door actuator, REFER to Temperature Blend Door Actuator - LH. TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO to O15. The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues. O15 MODULE ACTUATOR POSITION CALIBRATION NOTE: The purpose of the module actuator position calibration is to allow the HVAC module to reinitialize and calibrate the actuator stop points. - Ignition OFF. - Disconnect and inspect all HVAC module connectors. - Repair: - corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) - damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins - pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary 16/18

17 - Connect all the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. - Clear the DTCs. - Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test- HVAC Module. - Select any position except OFF. - NOTE: The HVAC module initializes and calibrates the actuators. Calibration of the actuators takes approximately 30 seconds. - Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? CHECK OASIS (On-Line Automotive Service Information System) for any applicable TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins). If a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) instructions. If no TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) addresses this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. The system is now operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a foreign object in the HVAC case or temporary binding that restricted actuator door travel. CHECK any actuator external linkage. If condition recurs, INSPECT actuator linkage and door for binding and CHECK HVAC case for foreign objects. 17/18
