1 3//2011 SECTION : Speed Control 2003 F-Super Duty /Excursion Workshop Manual DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING Procedure revision date: 08/01/2006 Speed Control Printable View (331 KB) Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 31, Vehicle Speed Control for schematic and connector information. Special Tool(s) 73III Automotive Meter 105-R0057 or equivalent Flex Probe Kit 105-R025B or equivalent Diagnostic Tool, Restraint System (2 req'd) 418-F088 (105-R0012) Principles of Operation The speed control system is designed to maintain a selected vehicle speed between approximately 48 and 200 km/h (30 and 125 mph). The electronic stepper motor (internal to the speed control servo) is controlled by turning the three phases of the motor on and off in sequence. The sequence determines the motor direction (open throttle or closed throttle based on vehicle speed). Whenever the system is engaged and active, a speed control set indicator will be illuminated in the instrument cluster. The brake pedal position (BPP) switch is a normally open switch. When the brake pedal is applied with the speed control system engaged, the BPP switch closes, putting the vehicle speed control in stand-by mode. NOTE: The deactivator switch is provided as an additional safety feature. rmally, when the brake pedal is pressed, the speed control servo will deactivate the speed control system. Under increased brake pedal effort, the deactivator switch, a normally closed switch, will open and remove power to the speed control servo clutch, releasing the throttle independent of the PCM. The clutch pedal position (CPP) switch is incorporated on vehicles equipped with manual transmissions. When the clutch pedal is applied with the vehicle speed control system engaged, the normally closed switch opens and signals the speed control servo to deactivate the speed control. The clockspring provides the electrical interface between the steering column wiring and the speed control switches in the steering wheel. The inputs to the speed control servo are: vehicle speed signal speed control switches brake pedal position (BPP) switch clutch pedal position (CPP) switch (if equipped) deactivator switch The outputs of the speed control servo are: speed control indicator speed control cable controlling the throttle position Inspection and Verification NOTE: If any concerns are noted with the speedometer or horn, address those concerns by referring to their associated sections before continuing speed control diagnosis. NOTE: When in speed control mode, initial depression of the clutch pedal may cause a normal momentary increase of engine rpm. NOTE: If the vehicle is a diesel, refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual. 1. Verify the customer concern by operating the speed control system. 2. NOTE: Any aftermarket modifications, including but not limited to those listed below, may cause the speed control to not operate correctly: Any wiring or lamp modifications affecting the brake lamp operation LED brake lamps n-factory installed trailer wiring Radios (speed sensitive, auto mute) Remote starters and alarms Lighting and electrical accessory modifications Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage: Visually inspect the speed control actuator and accelerator controls. Visually inspect the speed control cable without removing it to make sure of smooth cable Inspect the speed control cable connection to the throttle body.

2 3//2011 Visually inspect the accelerator cable without removing it to make sure of smooth cable Inspect the accelerator cable connection to the throttle body. Also check for cable interference with the carpet, bulkhead grommet, insulation and instrument panel wiring. Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Speed control cable Speed control cable not attached to throttle Electrical Central junction box (CJB) fuse(s): 27 (15A) 34 (10A) Speed control switches Brake pedal position (BPP) switch Clutch pedal position (CPP) switch (if equipped) Deactivator switch Speed control servo Circuitry Bulb 3. If the fault is not visually evident, go to the Self-Test Diagnostics. Self-Test Diagnostics WARNING: This test is a key on engine off (KOEO) test only that is conducted in PARK only with the emergency brake fully engaged. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the clutch pedal must be released in order to correctly carry out the self-test. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the transmission selector needs to be in the PARK (P) position. NOTE: Review the following steps before carrying out the self-test diagnostic procedure. NOTE: After entering the diagnostic mode, the module times out if the mandatory switch sequence is not completed within 5 seconds and each button is not pressed within one second of the previous button. If a module time-out occurs (speed control lamp stops flashing part way through the test), the procedure must be re-initiated. The self-test is comprised of 2 parts. The first part is a static check of the speed control electronics module and system. The second part is a dynamic pull-test to check the actuator motor and gear mechanism. To perform the self-test: Connect the scan tool to a power source that is not interrupted when the ignition switch changes positions. With the ignition switch in the RUN position, set the scan tool to monitor the powertrain control module (PCM) throttle position PID while the speed control actuator carries out the self-test. Enter self-test diagnostics by firmly pressing and holding the speed control OFF switch while quickly cycling the ignition switch from RUN-to-OFF-to-RUN, making sure the engine does not start and is not running. The speed control indicator lamp on the instrument panel will flash once to indicate that the speed control module has entered the diagnostic mode. Release the OFF switch. If 5 additional flashes are displayed at this point, a speed control subsystem concern exists. GO to Symptom Chart. NOTE: The module times out if each button is not pressed within one second of the previous button. If a module time out occurs (speed control lamp stops flashing part way through test), the procedure must be re-initiated. Firmly press and release the remaining switches within one second of each other in the following sequence: ON RSM (resume) CST (coast) SET/ACCEL The speed control indicator lamp flashes once after each of the first 4 buttons is successfully pressed. Firmly press and release each switch in the sequence immediately after the light goes out for the previous switch. NOTE: There will be a slight delay from when the last button is pressed and the lamp flashes diagnostic codes. If the self-test will not start or cannot be completed after multiple attempts, GO to Symptom Chart. Follow the list below for diagnostic flash codes, then GO to Symptom Chart. 0 flashes: flash after the last button pressed: suspect circuitry or speed control switch. 1 flash: Static test passed. 2 flashes: The stoplamp switch is damaged, circuit is damaged, or brake pedal is applied. 3 flashes: The speed control deactivator switch is open or the circuit is damaged. 4 flashes: The vehicle speed signal is out of range or circuit is damaged. 5 flashes: Speed control actuator internal failure. NOTE: Monitor the PCM throttle position PID after the last button is pressed. Within 0.25 second after the static test has passed, the speed control actuator carries out a dynamic pull test automatically by actuating the throttle lever from 1 to 10 mm (0.04 to 0.39 inches) of travel from the idle position for 3 seconds and then releasing the throttle. If the PID value does not change and holds steady for 3 seconds, GO to Symptom Chart. During the dynamic throttle pull, observe throttle movement to witness any binding or sticking of the speed control cable, verify the correct connection of the speed control cable to the throttle lever, and make sure that the throttle returns to the idle position. If incorrect connection and/or binding or sticking of the speed control is observed, GO to Symptom Chart. Turn the key to OFF and GO to Symptom Chart.
