1 Page 1 of 15 SECTION : Wipers and Washers 2000 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Workshop Manual DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING Procedure revision date: 06/21/1999 Wipers and Washers Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 81, Interval Wiper/Washer for schematic and connector information. Special Tool(s) Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) 418-F224, New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester 418-F052, or equivalent scan tool 73 Digital Multimeter or equivalent 105-R0051 Principles of Operation The windshield wiper system uses a two-speed, permanent magnet, three-brush electric wiper motor. When the multifunction switch is in the LO position, the common brush and the blue/orange wire brush are used. When the multifunction switch is in the HI position, the common brush and the white wire brush are used. Current bypasses a portion of the armature winding when the wiper motor is in the high-speed mode. When the multifunction switch is moved to the OFF position, the wiper motor will continue in low-speed mode until the wiper motor reaches the parked position. Then a switch internal to the motor will remove power to the wiper motor. The interval mode works with the low-speed position of the motor. The interval mode can be set from a 1-second delay up to a 17-second delay. The pause is decreased as the knob is rotated away from the OFF position. It is normal to be able to hear the relay clicking on and off in interval mode. When the washer system is engaged in interval mode or the windshield wipers are off, the wipers will cycle as long as the washer button is depressed. When the washer button is released, the washer spray will stop and the wipers will stay on for three to four more cycles. If the wipers are in the LO or HI position and the washer button is pressed, the wipers will not change speed or stop. The windshield washer system uses a nonadjustable nozzle jet to spray the washer fluid onto the windshield. The fluid is sprayed in a high-speed continuous stream across the windshield, making a fan-like pattern. A low windshield washer fluid warning is included on vehicles with an electronic instrument cluster. The LOW WASHER FLUID indicator will illuminate when the washer fluid is approximately one-fourth full or lower. The fluid level is determined by an internal switch to the washer reservoir. If the switch fails, install a new washer fluid reservoir. Inspection and Verification 1. Verify the customer concern. 2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Wiper blade missing or damaged Binding wiper pivot arm Binding wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft Empty washer reservoir Kinked or broken washer hoses Electrical Central junction box (CJB) Fuse 2 (30A) Damaged wiper motor Circuitry Damaged or corroded connectors Damaged washer pump Inoperative multifunction switch Wiper control module Thermal breaker internal to the wiper motor 3. REFER to Section TEST the system for normal operation. Component Test Windshield Wiper Motor CAUTION: Do not handle the windshield wiper motor abusively when diagnosing the wiper operations. Failure to do so may result in damage to the motor magnets and will make the windshield wiper motor inoperative. Rough handling of a new windshield wiper motor may also damage the motor magnets. Use Alternator, Regulator, and Starter Tester (ARBST) to test the wiper motor on the vehicle. To test the wiper motor, disconnect the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft from the wiper motor. For additional information, refer to Mounting Arm and Pivot Shaft. Disconnect the wiper motor connector. Connect the (A) green lead from the (B) ARBST to the positive post. Connect the (C) red lead from the tester to the wiper motor (D) common brush Pin 5 component side. Test the low speed mode by connecting a (E) cable from the battery negative post to the low speed brush Pin 6 and measure the current draw. If the current draw is greater than 3.5 amperes, install a new wiper motor. For additional information, refer tomotor Windshield Wiper. Test the high speed mode by connecting a cable from the battery negative post to the (G) high speed brush Pin 7 component side and measure the current draw. If the current draw is greater than 5.5 amperes, install a new wiper motor. For additional information, refer tomotor Windshield Wiper
