1 Timing Belt Removal CAUTION: Inspect the water pump when replacing the timing belt (page 10-9). Turn the crankshaft so that No. 1 piston is at top dead center (page 6-64). Before removing the timing belt, mark its direction of rotation if it to be reused. 1. Remove the splash shield. 2. Remove the power steering (P/S) pump. Do not disconnect the P/S hoses. 4. Remove the P/S bracket. 5. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt and pivot nut, then remove the belt. P/S BRACKET 45 N m (4.5 kg-m, 33 Ib-ft) 8 x 1.25 mm 24 N m (2.4 kg-m,17 Ib-ft) P/S PUMP P/S BELT 6. Remove the cruise control actuator and the P/S tank bracket. 7. Remove the engine support nuts. Loosen the mount bolt and pivot the side engine mount out of the way. 8 x 1.25 mm 24 N m (2.4 kg-m,17 Ib-ft) 3. Remove the A/C compressor adjusting pulley with bracket and the belt (with A/C), then remove the alternator belt. 2 8. Remove the cylinder head cover. 9. Remove the upper cover. 10. Remove the pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley. CAP NUT 10 N m (1.0 kg-m, 7 Ib-ft) 11. Remove the lower cover. 12. Loosen the adjusting bolt Push the tensioner to release tension from the belt, then retighten the adjusting bolt. WASHER 14. Remove the timing belt from the pulleys. D15B7, D15B8 engine: UPPER COVER 10 N m (1.0 kg-m,7 Ib-ft) LOWER COVER Remove the four bolts. TIMING BELT Adjustment, page N m (1.0 kg-m,7 Ib-ft) ADJUSTING BOLT For adjustment only; do not remove. SEAL RUBBER Replace when damaged or deteriorated. KEY CRANKSHAFT PULLEY PULLEY BOLT 14 x 1.25 mm Apply oil to the bolt threads, but not to the surface that contacts the washer. ADJUSTING BOLT For adjustment only ; do not remove. UPPER COVER 10 N m (1.0 kg-m, 7 Ib-ft) LOWER COVER RUBBER PLUG CRANKSHAFT PULLEY Remove any oil. PULLEY BOLT 14 x 1.25 mm Apply oil to the bolt threads, but not to the surface that contacts the washer. Install with concave surface facing out. RUBBER SEAL Replace when damaged or deteriorated. 10 N m (1.0 kg-m, 7 Ib-ft) KEY

4 Installation 1. Install the timing belt in the reverse order of removal; Only key points are described here. 2. Position the crankshaft and the camshaft pulleys as shown before installing the timing belt. A B Set the crankshaft so that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC). Align the groove on the teeth side of the timing belt drive pulley to the pointer on the oil pump. D15B7, D15B8 engines : Align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulley with the cylinder head upper surface. D16Z6 engine:align the TDC mark on the camshaft pulley with pointer on the back cover. D15Z1 engine:align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulley with pointers (triangle marks) on the back cover. 3. Install the timing belt tightly in the sequence shown. 5 Timing Belt Installation (cont'd) 4. Loosen the adjusting bolt, and retighten it after tensioning the belt. 5. Rotate the crankshaft about 4 or 6 turns counterclockwise so that the belt positions on the pulleys. 6. Adjust the timing belt tension (page 6-59). 7. Check the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley at TDC. CRANKSHAFT PULLEY: CAMSHAFT PULLEY: D15B7, D15B8 engines: TDC marks aligned with the cylinder head upper surface. D16Z6 engine: TDC mark aligned with the pointer on timing belt back cover. TD9 MARK (Painted white) D15Z1 engine: POINTER ON TIMING BELT BACK COVER 8. If the camshaft pulley is not positioned at TDC, remove the timing belt and adjust the positioning following the procedure on page 6-63, then reinstall the timing belt. Refer to page 6-60 for timing belt removal. Direction of rotation. After installation, adjust the tension of each belt. See section 23 for alternator belt tension adjustment. See section 22 for A/C compressor belt tension adjustment. See section 17 for P/S pump belt tension adjustment.

6 Inspection Replace the belt if oil or coolant soaked. Remove any oil or solvent that gets on the belt. 1. Remove the cylinder head cover. 2. Remove the upper cover. 3. Inspect the tinning belt for cracks and oil or coolant soaking. Tension Adjustment CAUTION: Always adjust timing belt tension with the engine cold. The tensioner is spring-loaded to apply proper tension to the belt automatically after making the following adjustment. Always rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise when viewed from the pulley side. Rotating it clockwise may result in improper adjustment of the belt tension. 1. Remove the cylinder head cover. 2. Remove the upper cover. 3. Set the No. 1 piston at TDC (page 6-64). 4. Loosen the adjusting bolt 180. Inspect this area for wear. ADJUSTING BOLT Direction of rotation. Rotate pulley and inspect belt. 5. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 3-teeth on the camshaft pulley to create tension on the timing belt. 6. Make sure the timing belt and the camshaft pulley are engaged securely. 7. Torque the adjusting bolt to 45 N m (4.5 kg-m, 33 Ib-ft). 4. After inspecting, retorque the crankshaft pulley bolt to specified torque. Specified Torque: 8.
