Lines Optimization for a TEU Container Vessel Operational life 25 years, price per ton fuel 600 US-Dollar RT / RT Baseline 24 kn, 14 m/14 m Each single red cross represents a full hull design and analysis approx in total 127,000,000 US-Dollar 72,000,000 US-Dollar 29,500,000 US-Dollar V/V Baseline No. 6 / Baseline 14 m/14 m The numbers in US-Dollars shows three different designs at the same displacement (100%) and the same speed (24 knots), which differ by resistance (lines optimization is done to reduce resistance), thus by the required power, i.e. by the fuel consumption, and the numbers give the additional amount of money the operator has to spend in 25 years at a price of fuel of 600 US$, on top of that to spend for the optimum design, which lies on the bottom border of the red cloud In other words, the US$ show the penalty the operator is charged by choosing the displayed designs instead of searching for the optimum on the above shown pareto-frontier.
Navigator Time for change Efficiency Defined Efficiency Practiced Conclusion
Ship performance strongly defined by its (more and more hostile ) nvironment operation costs: bunkering, crew, harbour, repair & maintenance insurances, fees shipping market: interest rates charter rates freight rates... politics & society: regulations, national/international IMO, MARPOL, green image... met-ocean climate: wind & wave climate, depths, temperatures, currents, sea ice, harbour constraints
Timeline for tightening of regulations for shipping *) estimated entry into force
With increasing transport demand, CO2-emissions in 2050 are estimated to be three times the emissions in The assumptions used in this prediction already account for novel technological and operational measures. Political and regulatory measures are expected in addition, incl. CO2-indexing (Design Index, Operational Index, ) emission trading The estimated additional costs related to CO2-emissions range from 25 to 70 $/t CO2 corresponding to 75 to 200 $/t fuel surcharge for one tonne of fuel.
Existing Ships facing Rising future Fuel Costs: Stricter regulations (Emissions) w/ impact fuel cost + Rising HFO prices + Existing world fleet designed and built during low fuel oil times Anticipated effective fuel costs for shipping until 2037 Source: Fearnley's Review, presented by Miiguel Palomares, Director, Marine Environment Division IMO, ITF2009

Optimization of dwt Bulk Carrier design Ms. Chen Xiaoying, Design Department Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard: Lloyds List, May 11 th, 2010 QTE Hudong Zhonghua orderbook grows SHANGHAI s Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, an offshoot of stateowned China State Shipbuilding Corp, has won five contracts for 10 panamax bulkers, including deals for its most popular 76,000 dwt ship, in the first five months of this year. [ ] All the ships are due for delivery between the fourth quarter 2011 and the first half of Hudong Zhoughua Shipbuilding has an order backlog of 71 vessels with a total of 4.8m dwt. The shipyard said it had increased its exposure to local shipowners following a drought in new orders last year. UQTE "Due to the introduction of FRIENDSHIP SYSTEMS software and services for hull form optimization Hudong Zhonghua has won several orders because of the better energy efficiency than all competing designs."
