DO NOT do the following: Do not lift people, or things over people. Do not wlk or work under lod or in the line of force of ny lod. Do not exceed the lod rting of the crne or ny other component in the system. To do so could result in filure of the equipment. Do not use more thn one crne to move lod tht exceeds the lod rting of single crne. A shift in lod weight could overlod the equipment. Do not use dmged or mlfunctioning equipment. To do so could result in filure of the equipment. Do not modify the equipment in ny wy. To do so could cuse equipment filure. Do not divert your ttention from the opertion. 4 pge 4 Owner's Mnul for Thern Model 548 Floor Crne 1.1 Assemling the Crne Inspect the crne during ssemly ccording to the Instructions for Periodic Inspection. This will give you record of the condition of the crne with which to compre future inspections. Sve ll oxes nd crtes tht the crne ws shipped in, use them gin if you need to repckge the crne. Contct the fctory immeditely if ny prts re missing or dmged. Do not overtighten fsteners, this my strip threds or cuse dmge to other prts. When the oom is relesed from its folded position, it moves rpidly nd with force. Keep the re in front of the oom (etween the crne legs) cler of ny ostruction when relesing the oom open crton nd thoroughly check contents ginst prts list Study prts drwings to understnd how the crne is ssemled. See pges luricte pins nd other components prior to ssemly. See Section 3.2 Luricting the Crne ssemle the crne in the following order: ssemle the swivel csters (item 2) to the crne with 5/16" x 3/4" cp screws (item 3), 5/16" lock wshers (item 5) nd 5/16" hex nuts (item 4). ssemle the wheels (item 6) t the ends of the legs (item 20 nd 21) using the xle olts (item 19). Be sure they re ssemled properly so the wheels re prllel with ech other. Secure the legs with the leg pin ssemly (item 7), which is ttched to the frme with cles. THE Crne is designed to fold up into compct pckge for storge nd trnsport. It is folded when shipped from the fctory. To relese the oom to its working position, turn the relese vlve counterclockwise until the oom pops out to its working position. Turn the relese vlve clockwise until it is tight nd use the jck hndle to operte jck to move the oom to horizontl position. Plce jck hndle in its holster. Assemle the swivel hook weldment (item 16) to the oom extension (item 23) with the swivel pin (item 17). Secure the swivel pin with two 5/32" x 1" cotter pins (item 18) Check crne to see tht ll olts re tight nd ll cotter pins ent to secure. See Figure 1.

Avoid shock lods creted y quickly opening nd closing the relese vlve s lod is eing lowered. Shock lods my overlod the hydrulic circuit nd cuse dmge to the jck THE INTENDED USE of this mchinery is to lift nd lower lods of its rted cpcity or less. It is not for lifting people or things over people The force required to move the lod must not exceed the lod rting of the crne. Consider the totl force required to move the lod, not the weight of the lod This equipment cn develop forces tht will exceed the lod rting. It is the responsiility of the equipment user to limit the size of the lod. Inspect the equipment regulrly for dmge ccording to the instructions contined in this mnul Performnce rtings of the equipment re ffected y the position of the oom. Lod rting represents the mximum lod tht cn e plced on new equipment. Lod rtings re ssigned vlues for specific oom positions. The lod rting decreses s you increse oom length. Lift height nd rech vry with the position of the oom Duty rtings refer to the type of use the equipment is suject to. 6 pge 6 Owner's Mnul for Thern Model 548 Floor Crne 2.2 Prepring for Opertion When determining whether the lod will exceed the lod rting, consider the totl force required to move the lod. Do not use the crne in n re defined s hzrdous y the Ntionl Electric Code, unless use in such n re hs een thoroughly pproved. Do not use the crne ner corrosive chemicls, flmmle mterils, explosives, or other elements tht my dmge the crne or injure the opertor. Adequtely protect the crne nd the opertor from such elements. Use the crne on rigid nd level surfce tht will support the crne nd its lod under ll lod conditions, including shock loding Consider the opertion. Do not egin until you re sure you cn perform the entire opertion without hzrd Inspect ll components of the system. Inspect the CRANE nd other equipment ccording to the Instructions for Frequent Inspection. The lod must e cler of other ojects nd free to move. Mke sure the lod will not tip, spin, roll wy, or in ny wy move uncontrollly Know your lod nd mke sure you do not exceed the lod rting of the crne or ny other equipment in the system Position the crne nd oom so the lod hook is centered over the lod. Avoid side pulls which could dmge the crne or cuse the lod to tip. See Figure 2. LOCK CASTERS on rer of crne to prevent movement during lifting djusting the oom. See Figure 2. Remove ny lod from the crne nd disengge hook from lod. correct Locte oom in horizontl position to mke djustment esier. oom extension pin center line c Remove oom extension pin nd djust oom extension to desired position, then re-insert pin. The oom extension pin must only e removed when djustments re eing mde. It must lwys e re-instlled immeditely To purge ir from the jck. incorrect c d e open the relese vlve y turning the hndle in counterclockwise direction two full turns. pump the hndle 10 full strokes. close the relese vlve y turning the hndle in clockwise direction until tight. pump the jck until the rm is extended to mximum height. if the condition seems etter ut is still detectle, repet steps "" through "d" until ll the ir is purged from the system.

Follow the recommendtions of the sling mnufcturer. Set the sling in the sddle of the hook with the hook ltch completely closed. See Figure 3. Center the lod on the hook so it will remin lnced nd not tip or rotte to one side. sling seted in sddle of hook 2.4 Moving the Lod lift the lod slowly nd smoothly. Mke sure the lod is lnced nd securely ttched efore lifting. See Figure 4. Oey stop signl from nyone. Appoint supervisor if more thn one person is involved in the opertion. This will reduce confusion nd increse sfety. When lifting or moving the lod, use tg line to keep the lod from swinging or twisting, while keeping yourself wy from the lod Operte the hydrulic jck to rise or lower the lod. c Rise the lod y smoothly pumping the hydrulic jck with the hndle. With new equipment, whining noise my occur when pumping. Lower the lod y slowly turning the relese vlve counterclockwise. Too mny full turns will unscrew the vlve nd relese oil. Close the vlve y tightening it clockwise UNLOCK CASTER t rer of crne Pull the crne ckwrd to move the lod, with the lod close to the floor nd tied to the mst nd legs to prevent swinging. See Figure Move the lod slowly nd smoothly, especilly when mking turns Move the crne y hnd only. Do not use powered devices to push or pull the crne. Operted in wet, dirty, hot, or cold surroundings. Clen the crne to remove dirt nd help prevent rust nd corrosion Clen the crne every six months or whenever it is dirty. c Wipe ll equipment to remove dirt nd grese. Leve light film of oil on ll surfces to protect ginst rust nd corrosion. Wipe off excessive mounts of oil to void the ccumultion of dirt Remove unnecessry ojects from the re surrounding the crne. 3.2 Luricting the Crne Mke sure luricnt hs temperture rting pproprite for the mient tempertures of the opertion. In order to prevent sel dmge nd jck filure, never use lcohol, hydrulic rke fluid or trnsmission oil in the jck. Use Hydrulic Oil (AW ISO 32). Luricte the crne properly to help protect it from wer nd rust. Red the following instructions crefully. Prtil disssemly my e required to luricte the crne properly to help protect from wer nd corrosion Luricte the wheels t lest every 6 months. Use grese rush to pply light film of NLGI #2 grese to the roller erings on the rer cster wheels. Apply 2 to 3 drops of 150 grde ger oil to the shfts on the front wheels, rotte the wheels to llow oil to penetrte, nd wipe off excess oil to void ccumultion of dirt Luricte ll pins t lest every 6 months. Use grese rush to pply light film of NLGI #2 grese to ll pins Luricte the swivel hook t lest every 6 months. Apply 2 to 3 drops of 150 grde ger oil, rotte the hook to llow oil to penetrte, nd wipe off excess oil to void ccumultion of dirt luricte the jck pivot pins nd other moving prts fter 10 cycles luricte equipment y following the mnufcturers recommendtions. it should not e necessry to refill or top off the reservoir with hydrulic fluid unless there is n externl lek. An externl lek requires immedite repir which must e performed in dirt-free environment y qulified hydrulic repir personnel who re fmilir with this equipment.

Keep written records of inspection. This llows comprison with comments from previous inspections so you cn see chnges in condition or performnce. 3.3 Inspecting the Equipment Do not use dmged or mlfunctioning equipment. Plce n OUT OF ORDER sign on the crne. Do not use the crne until the sign is removed y qulified mintennce person who hs completely corrected the prolem. Inspect the crne to detect signs of dmge or poor opertion efore they ecome hzrdous Consult pplicle codes nd regultions for specific rules on inspecting the crne nd other equipment Instructions for Frequent Inspection Perform frequent inspections: Before ech opertion. Every 3 hours during opertion. Whenever you notice signs of dmge or poor opertion. Visully inspect the entire crne nd ll other equipment involved in the opertion. Check ll equipment for crcks, dents, ending, rust, wer, corrosion nd other dmge. Mke sure the entire crne is properly luricted. Mke sure ll fsteners re tight nd secure. Mke sure the surfce under the crne is in good condition, nd cple of supporting the crne nd its lod under ll lod conditions. Test crne performnce y operting the crne with lod not exceeding the lod rting. Listen for unusul noises, nd look for signs of dmge s you operte the crne. Mke sure the hydrulic jck rises nd lowers the lod smoothly, without hesittion or strin. Mke sure the floor crne rolls smoothly nd freely, without swerving or inding.

Whenever you notice dmge or poor opertion in frequent inspection. Whenever you hve, or think you my hve, overloded or shock loded the crne. Figure 5 Lod Hook Inspection twist throt opening thickness The wire rope ssemly must e replced if the throt opening is 15% wider thn nominl, if the thickness is 10% less thn nominl, or if the hook is twisted 10 or more. To remove ir from the jck insert hndle onto relese vlve nd turn counterclockwise no more thn 3 turns. Plce hndle in hndle socket nd pump hndle 6 to 8 strokes. Repet s required. Completely correct ll prolems efore continuing. Use the Trouleshooting Chrt to help determine the cuse of certin prolems. See tle Instructions for Periodic Inspection Visully inspect the crne nd ll other equipment. Disssemle the crne s necessry to inspect individul components. Check the finish for wer, flking, or other dmge. Check ll equipment for crcks, dents, ending, rust, wer, corrosion nd other dmge. If the equipment ws overloded, or if you notice crcks nd other signs of overloding nd dmge promptly remove equipment from use nd hve it repired or replced. DO NOT CONTINUE TO USE DAMAGED OR OVERLOADED EQUIPMENT. Check ll fsteners for stripped threds, wer, ending, nd other dmge. Mesure the throt opening, thickness, nd twist of the hook. Replce the hook if it shows signs of dmge. See figure 5. Mke sure hook ltch opens without inding nd closes when relesed. Check the hydrulic jck for leks, ending, wer, nd other dmge. Mke sure the entire crne is properly luricted. Mke sure ll lels nd pltes re redle, firmly ttched, free of dmge nd clen. Replcements re ville from the fctory. Test crne performnce y operting the crne with test lod equl not exceeding the lod rting. Listen for unusul noises nd look for signs of dmge s you operte the crne. Mke sure the hydrulic jck rises nd lowers the lod smoothly, without hesittion or strin. Mke sure the crne rolls smoothly nd freely, without swerving or inding.

It is your responsiility to determine when to replce prts. When considering whether to continue using prt or to replce it, rememer tht replcing it is the est wy to void further equipment dmge. Appoint qulified person to e responsile for ll repirs to the equipment. 3.4 Repiring the Crne Get fctory uthoriztion for ll repirs. Unuthorized repirs will void the wrrnty, nd my led to dmge or filure of the crne Replce dmged or poorly operting prts with Thern repir prts Refinish res where the pint is worn or flking. A good finish helps to protect ginst corrosion nd wether dmge. Remove the finish from dmged res, down to the re metl. c Clen the re thoroughly. Repint with high qulity primer nd finishing cot To order repir prts, contct Thern, Inc. 13 Owner's Mnul for Thern Model 548 Floor Crne pge 13 Figure 6 Collpsing the Crne If you would like to purchse new jck for the crne, plese contct Thern, Inc. 548 crnes with seril numer of or higher re equipped with Norco ottle jck, P/N B6017. Crnes with n erlier seril numer require the purchse of B6022 replcement kit. 4.1 Collpsing the Crne djust the oom extension to its shortest length lower the oom, leving the relese vlve untightened push the oom tight ginst the stop which contins the hndle spring. At the sme time, tighten the relese vlve. Then pump on the jck hndle until the unit locks in collpsed position. Do not force the jck hndle. Forcing the jck hndle with the crne collpsed will quickly overlod the pump resulting in filure. Keep record of wht you ship, nd when you send it remove the leg pins, remove the legs nd slide them into the mst tues.
