3 Timing/Synchronizing/ Adjusting Specifictions MODEL 90/95/120 SPORT JET MAXIMUM 5000 RPM* 30 BTDC IDLE CRANK SPEED 32 BTDC RPM FULL THROTTLE RPM SPARK PLUG TYPE CHAMPION L76V CHAMPION QL76V FIRING ORDER 90/95 HP FIRING ORDER 120 HP WARNING Engine cn strt when turning flywheel to check timing. Remove ll sprk plugs from engine to prevent engine from strting. Specil Tools Description Prt Numer Service Tchometer * Timing Light * Sprk Gp Tester *My e otined loclly. Checking for Top Ded Center (TDC) 4. Check if mrk on flywheel ligns with mrk on pointer. NOTE: If mrk nd pointer do not lign, the flywheel key hs een shered. Checking Timing (At Crnking Speed) HP Timing Specifictions At Crnking Speed At Wide Open Throttle 90/95/ Remove sprk plug leds from sprk plugs, remove sprk plugs. 2. Attch sprk tester (Specil Tool No ) to engine. Attch tester leds to corresponding sprk plug leds. 1. Remove sprk plug wires nd sprk plugs. 2. Instll timing tool (Specil Tool No A1). 3. Turn flywheel in clockwise direction until TDC is reched s shown on the dil indictor Move towershft to wide open throttle position. 2D-1

4 4. Connect timing light (Specil Tool No ) to the No. 1 sprk plug led. IMPORTANT: The dvnce chrcteristics of this ignition system re such tht the ignition timing will retrd itself slightly t wide-open-throttle. Thus, setting mximum timing t 32 BTDC t crnking speed should result in retrdtion to 30 BTDC t 5300 RPM. Therefore, it is recommended tht to e ssured of mximum performnce ll timing djustments mde t crnking speed should e verified with the engine running. 5. Crnk motor nd oserve timing mrks. As Needed 6. Adjust timing. 7. Loosen locknut. 8. Turn timing rod to djust timing. 9. Tighten locknut on timing rod. IMPORTANT: The Turn Key Strt feture is dependent on closed throttle shutters. If the throttle shutters re even slightly crcked open the Turn Key Strt will e disled. COMPLETE THIS PROCEDURE IN SEQUENCE 1. Disconnect throttle link t towershft end. - Locknut - Timing Rod 10. Remove test equipment nd instll sprk plugs nd propeller. NOTE: If possile, test the motor nd check the timing under ctul operting conditions. - Throttle Link Turn-Key Strt Feture The Sport Jet utilizes n utomtic enrichner to strt cold engine. Advncing the throttle will disle the uto enrichner. Synchronizing Cruretors to Ignition Timing for Turn-Key Strt IMPORTANT: An engine idle speed of RPM is necessry to provide the engine with dequte cooling wter. 2D-2 ELECTRICAL AND IGNITION R1 JUNE 1996

5 2. Synchronize throttle movement on cruretors. This is done y : 4. Pivot throttle cm forwrd so it just contcts the roller. (90/95 HP Shown) - Mrk 5. Inspect position of mrk on cm in reltion to roller. NOTE: Mrk on cm must lign with the center of the roller, without moving it. - Tie Br Screw(s). Rotte throttle cm wy from roller on ottom cruretor.. Loosen tie r screw(s). c. Check tht the cruretor shutters re closed. d. Tighten tie-r screw(s). e. This djustment is mde with the throttle link disconnected from the towershft (Step 1). NOTE: Throttle cm djustments re criticl to low speed engine timing. If the djustment is off (too erly or too lte), the engine will not run properly t low speed. 6. If throttle cm pick up point requires djustment:. Loosen nut until screw cn just e turned. You should feel slight friction etween screw nd throttle cm. IF REQUIRED: 3. Adjust idle stop screw to specified dimensions following: c - Cm - Nut c - Eccentric Roller 90 HP Shown 90/95 HP: Set dimension () to 1/8 in. 120 HP: Set dimension () to 1/4 in.. Turn eccentric roller counterclockwise to correct djustment s descried in Step 3. c. Hold position of roller with screwdriver. d. Tighten nut. NOTE: When this procedure is done ensure tht there is clernce etween the throttle cm nd roller, so tht the throttle shutters remin closed. Setting Idle Timing 1. Connect the link rod to the tower shft. 2. Strt the engine. 2D-3

6 3. Check engine timing t idle. Idle timing is 8 to 10 BTDC. 4. If djustments re needed to otin the 8 to 10 BTDC specifictions, do the following:. Turn the tower shft screw in to increse timing, turn screw out to decrese timing. Check WOT Throttle Position with Engine Not Running 1. Advnce the tower shft to WOT nd check shutter position from horizontl, 5. c c - Tower Shft Screw. Disconnect the link rm to djust the clernce of the cm to roller ( in.). c. Re-connect the link rm. d. Re-strt the engine nd check the idle timing. - Throttle Shutter - Line On Throttle Shft Corresponds To Shutter Position IF REQUIRED: 2. Adjust the WOT stop screw to otin horizontl shutter position, 5. - Timing Mrk e. Adjust cruretor idle mixture screws for est opertion. 7 Check WOT Ignition Timing with Engine Running 1. With engine running t WOT, check the timing (28-30 ). Check WOT Ignition Timing with Engine Not Running 1. Remove sprk plug leds from sprk plugs. - Timing Mrk 2. If djustments re needed do the following:. Turn off the engine.. Loosen locknut. c. Turn timing rod: (1.) In to increse timing (2.) Out to decrese timing 3. Tighten locknut. 4. Re-check timing. 2. Remove sprk plugs. 3. Attch sprk tester (Specil Tool No ) to engine. - Locknut - Timing Rod 4. Connect sprk plug leds to sprk tester Connect timing light (Specil Tool No ) to the numer 1 cylinder sprk plug led. 2D-5

8 6. Hold towershft in the wide open throttle (W.O.T.) position. 5. Strting with top cruretor, turn ech of the idle mixture screws clockwise 1/8 turn t time, llowing 10 seconds etween ech turn, until motor egins to pop from len fuel/ir setting. 1/8 Turn (Wit 10 Seconds) - Tower Shft 7. Crnk motor nd oserve timing mrks. IMPORTANT: To ttin 30 degrees timing while the engine is ctully running, set timing t crnking speed to 32 degrees. Adjusting Idle Mixture IMPORTANT: Idle mixture screw djustments should e mde with motor in wter. Idle cnnot e properly set using flushette or dynmometer. 1. Turn idle mixture screws clockwise until lightly seted. CAUTION Do not force idle screws. Tip dmge could result. 2. Turn idle mixture screws out (counterclockwise) 1-1/2 turn. 3. Strt motor nd llow to wrm up to operting temperture. 4. Move throttle control to the lowest relile setting. IMPORTANT: Motor must idle for minimum of one minute to llow fuel recircultion system to egin functioning. IMPORTANT: The cruretors must e djusted together. As you turn one idle mixture screw, turn the remining cruretor idle mixture screws the sme mount efore proceeding. 1/8 Turn (Until Engine Pops) 3/16 Turn 6. Turn ech idle mixture screw counterclockwise (richer) 3/16 turn. This should e very close to the optimum setting. 7. Advnce throttle to W.O.T. to cler out the engine. 8. Return throttle to idle speed nd llow engine to idle for t lest one minute. 9. Quickly dvnce the throttle to W.O.T.. If the engine hesittes ecuse of rich fuel mixture, turn the idle mixture screws 1/6 turn clockwise to len out the cruretors nd repet step 7-9 until the engine ccelertes without hesittion. 2D-6 ELECTRICAL AND IGNITION R1 JUNE 1996

9 Check Oil Pump Adjustment 1. Move towershft to the Wide Open Throttle position. Inspect oil pump lignment mrk with the oil pump lever. Adjust oil pump link rod to lign with the lst mrk. - Oil Pump Lever - Alignment Mrk (At Wide Open Throttle) 2. Adjust oil pump link rod s required. 2D-7
