COMMAND: 1 Rear Mount Aerial Ladder 1 Portable Ladder Pipe (Note B) 1 Halyard and Reel (Note C) 1 Siamese 3" x 3" (Note A) 1 Single Gate and Gauge 3" 1 Source of pressurized water "Operate ladder pipe on Rear Mount Aerial Ladder" 3. OPERATIONS: 3.1 Place apparatus 25' to 30' from building with turn table centered for maximum coverage. 3.2 Chauffeur sets brakes, engages power take off, chocks rear wheel on his side, lowers tormentors and mounts turntable to prepare to operate the aerial ladder. (Fig. 1) Figure 1 1
3.3 Number 1 man: Mounts apparatus on side with hose crib. Proceeds to ladder pipe, releases ladder pipe clamps and mounts top of upper storage compartment. See Fig. 2 & 3 Number 2 man: Number 3 man: Mounts apparatus on side opposite hose crib, proceeds to the front of the apparatus and removes halyard and reel from tool bed, then mounts upper side compartment and proceeds to tip of ladder via top of upper compartment and cab roof. Proceed to street just below tip of ladder. Figure 2 Figure 3
January 1, 1997 EVOLUTION 21A REAR MOUNT AERIAL LADDER USED AS A WATER TOWER 3.4 Number 1 man: With the help of #4 man, lifts ladder pipe and places it on ladder rail closest to him. He slides pipe along rails walking on roof of cab until he reaches #2 man. (Fig. 4) Number 2 man: Number 3 man: Number 4 man: Straddles rail closest to him, passes the reel and halyard to #3 man in street but retains possession of one end of halyard which he drapes over ladder rail in front of him. Receives reel and halyard from #2 man. Places reel on ground and holds on the one end of halyard. Mounts same running board as #1, proceeds to spot vacated by #1 and assists him to lift ladder pipe. He feeds hose to maintain a slack behind #1 man. Figure 4 Figure 5 Figure Number 1 man: Passes pipe to #2 man, assists him in securing pipe to ladder, and attaches hose strap on hose just below ladder pipe inlet. (Fig 5 & 6) 3
Number 2 man: Number 3 man: Number 4 man: Receives pipe from #1 man and clamps it on rungs 1 & 2. Attaches halyard clip to ladder pipe handle, points tip of pipe toward ground. (Fig. 7) When ladder pipe is in position, attaches other halyard clip to collar of ladder pipe (Fig. 8) Removes remaining hose from hose crib and places it in the street. Proceeds to street next to hose crib. (Fig. 9) Figure 7 Figure 8 Figure 9
January 1, 1997 EVOLUTION 21A REAR MOUNT AERIAL LADDER USED AS A WATER TOWER 3.6 Number 1 man: Takes position vacated by #4 man, removes the siamese and gate and hands it to #4 man, and then proceeds to street and pulls hose to rear of apparatus. (Fig. 11) Number 2 man: Proceeds to street and assists No. 1 man in pulling hose at rear of apparatus. (Fig. 12) Number 3 man: Unreels halyards and proceeds to street near turntable on outboard side of apparatus and prepares to unreel halyards as ladder pipe is positioned. (Fig. 10) Number 4 man: Receive siamese and gate from #1 man, carries it to rear of the apparatus and assists to connect it to hose from source of supply. (Fig. 11) Figure 10 Figure 11 Figure 12 5
3.7 Number 1 man: Feeds hose onto ladder as it is raised from bed. Assists #2 to walk hose around turntable if fire is on the same side of apparatus as the hose crib. (Fig. 13) Number 2 man: Assists #1 to feed hose onto ladder as it is raised from bed. Assists #1 to walk hose around rear of the apparatus if fire is on the same side of apparatus as the hose crib. (Fig. 13) Number 3 man: Guides halyards as ladder pipe is positioned for use. (Fig. 13) Number 4 man: Tends gate awaiting orders to start water. (Fig. 14) Figure 13 Figure 14
January 1, 1997 EVOLUTION 21A REAR MOUNT AERIAL LADDER USED AS A WATER TOWER 3.8 Chauffeur Raises bed ladder, rotates turntable, extends fly to operating position, sets rung locks. (Fig. 15) Figure Number 1 man: Feeds hose as ladder is extended Number 2 man: Assists #1 to feed hose as ladder is extended. Number 3 man: Controls vertical direction of stream with halyards. Number 4 man: Turns gate on when officer gives command "start water". 7
4. NOTES: A. Hose is carried in crib in two sections, pre-connected and folded from the middle in such a manner that one section is connected to ladder pipe in front of hose crib and the other end is connected to the siamese to the rear of the hose crib. (Fig. 16) Figure 16 Side View CA F NY B. Portable ladder pipe is carried on top of upper compartment, in front of the hose crib with the handle attached. Gate & Siamese C. Halyard is wound double from the middle on reel, with a snap clip on each end, so arranged that the both ends unwind simultaneously. Care must be taken during raising and extending to keep halyards apart to prevent intertwining or snagging. D. Horizontal movement of stream is controlled by moving the turntable. Care must be exercised against sudden stops or jerks of the turntable to prevent excessive side stress on the ladder. E. Halyards shall be tied to turntable when ladder pipe is to remain in a fixed position. F. Maximum extension of ladder with 1 1/2" tip is 80 feet. Maximum pressure on nozzle is 90 psi for a solid stream nozzle. Pressures at siamese are in the table following this Evolution. G. Additional Notes in Evolution #21 shall be followed where applicable.
January 1, 1997 EVOLUTION 21A REAR MOUNT AERIAL LADDER USED AS A WATER TOWER ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR EVOLUTION S 21 AND 21-A A. Salt water shall never be used in drills. B. When it is possible to jack knife the truck, it is recommended that it be jack knifed with the cab facing the curb closest to the fire building. C. When the street has a severe crown, allowances must be made to insure ladder angle does not exceed 70 degrees. D. The portable ladder pipe is clamped to the center of the two top rungs of the top sliding section of the aerial ladder. E. The hose strap is secured just below the swivel of the ladder pipe, taking care to attach it only to the top sliding section. F. When extending the ladder, be careful to prevent the hose lugs from snagging on the ladder. G. When ladder is extended to desired height, be sure to retract sliding sections sufficiently to engage extension locks. H. When a change in ladder angle is desired during operations, the use of the hydraulic lock is indicated. Turn lock control valve to lock position, activate ladder control lever, crack lock valve permitting a slight flow of fluid thus providing a more sensitive control and a gradual movement of the ladder under severe nozzle reaction. Close lock and return control lever to neutral position after desired angle is reached. I. The force of gravity acting to lower the ladder and the nozzle reaction from the operating stream tend to neutralize each other when the water is flowing. If for any reason the flow of water is suddenly shut off, the ladder will be subjected to severe structural stresses and strains; therefore the recommended procedure is to supply a ladder pipe from two separate sources of water (pumper, fireboat). J. Drain hose lines immediately after use to prevent freezing and relieve excessive weight. K. In some instances, it is necessary to remove the ladder pipe before ladder can be completely bedded after use. 9
