3 Litter Collection Picking up litter & small items $ GENERAL PRECAUTIONS Airborne Rubbish Hazards Hit by vehicles Slips, trips and falls. Lacerations to hands/fingers when handling waste, broken glass, metal and other sharp objects Puncture wounds resulting in Hepatitis B and Tetanus Illness from breathing fungus and moulds Illness from contact with animal faeces and putrescent waste Foreign objects in eyes when collecting or throwing items onto truck Beacons and / or hazards lights actuated as soon as arriving on site Traffic plan or control if necessary Wear appropriate footwear Inspect site for hazards such as paths, kerbs and other obstructions prior to commencing litter pick up Wear appropriate gloves at all times when handling litter If picking up manually, position body as close as possible to litter Use can catcher where possible and ensure rotating of hands Avoid over stretching or twisting to collect items. Use disposable face masks when appropriate Wear approved safety eyewear when waste particles could become airborne Do not pick up heavy items use lifting equipment as fitted. Pick up dead animals, faeces and other putrescent waste using long handled shovel Place collected items in a garbage bag, small dust bin or wheelie bin and avoid repeat walks to vehicle reducing chance of tripping/falling. Do not overfill and make it to be too heavy to carry or manoeuvre. Public Safety If there are loose items in back of truck use nets provided on the trucks to contain items when travelling Trip hazards: items, tools, kerb and other obstructions Slips and falls on slippery grass Bites by spiders and insects when picking up discarded items. Ensure clear path to truck is maintained at all times. 4 Collecting large items $ Personal injury, back or hands Application of high force in lifting, rolling or otherwise manoeuvring large items to lift platform Lacerations to hands/fingers when handling waste timber, jagged metal and plastic, broken glass, metal and other sharp objects Jamming of fingers or hands Foreign objects in eyes when collecting or throwing items onto truck Beacons and / or hazards lights actuated as soon as arriving on site Attempt to park as close as possible to minimize travel distance Wear gloves at all times when handling waste Determine and assess the weight, shape and size of item, so that suitable method can be used (presence of hand grips, stability, etc), either by hand, the tailgate lifter or crane to place on truck. Remove or lock doors that can swing. Remove other attachments that make load awkward or unbalanced. Never attempt to lift large or heavy items by yourself if it is a 2 man lift Arrange for assistance if too heavy to be lifted, rolled or otherwise manoeuvred by two people Place into compactor hopper using lifting platform, heavy items should be lifted into hopper by lifting platform at all times. When picking up bags try to not place hand underneath, as bag could contain items of danger like glass or other sharp items. Wear approved safety eyewear at all times when collecting waste items that might tend to become airborne Avoid being entangled or snagged on items, Do not hold items onto platform whilst lifting into hopper. Place items flat onto platform to avoid any sudden movement or item falling or slipping off. Stand clear of items whilst lifting into hopper and ensure no other person is within lifting zone. Be aware that lifting platform when in the lowered position to avoid tripping. Lock away when not required. Do not compact any gas tanks / aerosol cans / paint tins or the likes refer to SWP Avoid / be aware of any items that could become projectiles or air borne when compacted stand clear. 5 GENERAL PRECAUTIONS - Compactor Hazards Sweeping debris with broom Shovel debris into compactor or Bin Damage to vehicle Personal injury or to others Slips, trips & Falls Muscular- Skeletal injury from sweeping / shovelling. Muscular-skeletal injury resulting from shovelling material onto back of truck Twisting and bending Striking pedestrian and members of the public Property Damage Bin lifter should be lowered when compacting to avoid damage to lifter or platform. Bin lifter should be lowered when large or heavy items are collected. Compacting cycle to be completed before raising bin lifter into travel position. Do NOT exceed the SWL of the bin lifter or the platform. Maintain a straight back when sweeping or shovelling. Do not over stretch your body or over twist or bend. Inspect site for hazard before commencing sweeping or shovelling. Check surroundings and vehicle movement, and use extreme caution when working on the road / gutters. Use signs or vehicle to shield from traffic as appropriate Use of overhead beacon and hazard lights and wearing high visibility clothing if working on or near a road in the open to passing vehicles Ensure sweeping / shovelling movements do not harm passing pedestrians. Eyewear & dust masks may be required if dusty or windy. Sweep debris in small piles rather than applying force to create a large pile. Do not try to manoeuvre broom into tight areas, i.e. between vehicles and gutter. Only sweep where can be reached without the need to over extend your body or arms Shovel small piles rather than applying force to create a large pile. Do not try to manoeuvre shovel into tight areas, i.e. between vehicles and gutter.. Attempt to have vehicle as close as possible to the work site at all times, if not possible, the use of a bin could assist. Do not overfill bin as to create a manual handling issue. 6 OIL SPILLS Making Safe of Roads due to oil / fuel spills etc # Slips and falls Vehicle and property damage Danger to the public Ensure that rotating beacons are used Turn on headlights and warning lights if required Use your vehicle between the spill and oncoming traffic Call on other crews from Street Cleansing unit to assist either with vehicles or manual support. WASTE DISPOSAL Emptying / Tipping Load at Nominated Disposal Site ILLEGAL RUBBISH ASBESTOS Striking pedestrians workers and members of the public # DANGEROUS / HAZARDOUS GOODS (chemicals, liquids, etc) # SHARPS / SYRINGES Use mirrors when reversing Plan shortest reverse path Use passenger as a spotter whilst reversing if applicable Ensure firm and level ground Use safety props if need to clear out items from rear of compactor. Wash out truck from the side, do not go enter area when rear door is raised.
