2 Mobile Plant and Vehicles Use of Mobile Plant and Vehicles # $ Refer to SWP 001 Driving Trucks General Precautions for Manual Work Activities All Manual Outdoor Tasks. # $ Refer to SWP 011 Manual Handling; SWP 004 Working Outdoors Travel to Collection Area Travel to site Waste Collection Commence on site Perform task, driving and pick up bins Personal injury resulting from collision with other vehicles and property Collision with other vehicles either stationary or moving Collision with property, shop awnings, poles, flags, street furniture Collision with pedestrians and other vehicles when reversing Refer to SWP 001 Driving Trucks Seat belts must be worn at all times when vehicle travelling Activate warning lights on arrival at worksite on commencement of waste collection. Ensure that CCTV cameras are operating correctly Zero blood alcohol at all times Provision of training on drug use and alcohol consumption and documentation Driver refresher training to be provided each year All incidents reported, reports analysed Audible reversing warning operating SWP 207 Key OHS Public Health and Safety # Environmental $ Quality Page 2 of 6
3 Driver leaves vehicle to collect inaccessible bins Muscular strains, slips and trips when driver exiting truck to collect bins Driver struck by moving vehicles and plant Training 3 points of contact to be maintained at all times when entering or leaving the truck. All staff issued with safety boots with slip resistant soles Refer to SWP 011 Manual Handling Trips and falls over kerbs Struck by protruding objects from parked vehicles Attacks by animals Muscular-skeletal injuries caused by dragging bins over kerb and uneven surfaces Unhygienic bins Muscular strains, slips and trips when cleaning up spilled waste Spilled waste bins over filled by citizens High visibility clothing to be worn at all times when not in vehicle Maintain high level of awareness of traffic movements, animals in vicinity, ground conditions, kerbs Crew are issued with leather gloves and are required to wear them Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling food Crews are offered Hepatitis B and Tetanus vaccinations Spilled waste picked up using shovel and broom, placed in bin for lifting into truck Over filled bins not emptied if unsafe to do so notice placed on bin Crew must not put hands into bins or removed bagged rubbish by hand Cuts, puncture wounds from broken glass, jagged metal and sharps in waste SWP 207 Key OHS Public Health and Safety # Environmental $ Quality Page 3 of 6
4 Tipping waste into truck Striking/entanglement in overhead electricity and telecommunication leading to fire, electric shock and loss of service Dust Check for overhead power lines and other obstacles Implement emergency response procedures if entangled and unable to safely break contact. Drivers to remain in cabin until power isolated unless unsafe to do so such as a fire. Hazardous substances in bins resulting in fire, release of toxic gases, vapours and fumes Soft tissue injuries to shoulder, neck and back from swivelling in seat to view bins and grabs Bin falling from grab - personal injury to passersby and property damage Spilled waste bins knocked over during collection Muscular strains, slips and trips when driver exiting truck to reposition bins Training provided to drivers on safe exit techniques. Check in top of bin before tipping. Do not tip if loose dusty material present Where source can be identified provide educational material for citizen awareness dust to be securely bagged before being placed in bins Notices placed on offending bins Check in top of bin prior to tipping. Do not tip if hazardous materials suspected to be present Education for citizen awareness hazardous materials must not be placed in bins Notices placed on offending bins Routine inspection and maintenance on grabs Truck must be stationary until bin is placed on ground and arm retracted Driver training 3 points of contact to be maintained at all times when entering or leaving the truck. Waste Disposal Drive to Landfill Empty truck at landfill Collision with pedestrians, other vehicles and property Overturning uneven ground, slippery ground, soft ground Drivers wear appropriate gloves (leather) when cleaning up spilled waste Refer SWP 001 Driving Trucks Refer SWP 001 Driving Trucks Driver to maintain high level of vigilance at landfill site Keep within maximum landfill site speed limit Check that body is empty Hit by moving vehicles Maintain safe buffer distance from edge of landfill Remain in truck until tipping is complete Wear high visibility clothing whenever out of truck Maintain high level of awareness at all times SWP 207 Key OHS Public Health and Safety # Environmental $ Quality Page 5 of 6
6 General Precautions General precautions to be implemented at all stages of each job Foreign objects in eyes when collecting, dismantling or throwing items onto truck Wear approved safety eyewear at all times when collecting waste items Refer SWP 011 Manual Handling Slips and falls on slippery surfaces Wear appropriate safety footwear Trip hazards: items, tools, kerb and other obstructions Ensure clear path to truck is maintained at all times Check ground for hazards Bites by spiders and insects when picking up spilled waste.
