1 NG 15, loco no. 134 Last repair book whilst in use by SAR from Humewood Road Mostly translated from Afrikaans, by Martin Coombs, with help from members of the SAR-L group including Pierre de Wet, James Smith, Aidan McCarthy and Keith Simmons. Further assistance from the bilingual diagrams in the SAR Handbook on the Steam Locomotive for Enginemen and Running Shed Staff, and from the online Afrikaans-English dictionary at < Notes: Repair books tend to be written in a hurry by drivers at the end of their shifts, using whatever writing implement was to hand. In addition drivers may not be particularly literate or good at spelling, and may use colloquialisms. Thus translating such a document is not easy and there have been one or two times when I have had to make a guess at what was written. However, in 99% of cases I think the general meaning has been clear. Key:??? or Illeg. implies that there is a word or words that cannot be deciphered. Text in red remains in Afrikaans for lack of a translation. Text in blue is comment by me. Implications: As one correspondent commented, most of the minor problems will be sorted during the normal processes of restoration but the references in the later pages to serious leakage from stays or foundation ring rivets on the rear left of the firebox need to be taken more seriously. I think klinknaels means rivets rather than stays (= ankers) but drivers might have used the term indiscriminately. Was any work done on the boiler in SA after the loco was staged? In order to get it to work easily from Sandboxes taken off and repaired the cab you must open (the handle) and RH sandbox valve tightened tug and pull to get it open, and you must Sand valve replaced and repaired tug and pull to get it closed.
