1 1. Introduction VDF (Vortex Dynamic Filter) Instruction Manual CL-MR-series models Thank you for purchasing our product, NIKUNI VDF (Vortex Dynamic Filter). Please read this manual carefully and thoroughly before using the product to ensure correct and safe usage of the product, then keep the manual safe in a convenient place for future reference. VDF is the centrifugal solid-liquid separator. Several types, such as the basic VDF unit with no accessories, VDF with an adapter and legged VDF, are available so that you can select the most appropriate VDF for your application. Features of the individual models are as follows: CL-MR-series model: Have an underflow pipe submerged in water; it is suitable when bubbles forming in liquid are undesirable. (VDF UN with no accessories) Optional sludge pod enables batch processing of dirty concentrate. 2. For Safe Use In this manual, safety instructions are classified into two levels (Warning and Caution) to ensure correct and safe usage of the product and prevent injuries to the operator and bystanders as well as damage to property. Instructions for Installation and Operation Instructions common to all VDF types 1) Install the underflow pipe vertically with its outlet pointing downward. 2)When installing this, use piping joints to connect it to the liquid inlet and underflow. Attach support equipment such as U-bolts to the joints and main body to prevent rotation and toppling. If using a sludge pod, attach support equipment to the main body of the valve so that a load is not placed on the VDF or sludge pod when operating the valve. 3) If connecting screwed piping joints, use sealing tape and take care not to deform the areas on the main body where the screws are attached. Also, be aware that liquid may leak if the screws are too loose or breakage may occur if they are too tight. 4) Use only the fluid whose kinetic viscosity does not exceed 2 cst and whose sludge specific gravity is equal to or greater than 2.7. Fluid with higher viscosity or smaller sludge specific gravity will impair the sludge-removing performance. 5) Take extra care in selecting a pump. Pump performance would affect the amount of clean liquid and the sludge-removing performance even if the same type of VDF is used. The recommended pump supply pressure (to VDF) is between 0.15 and 0.25 MPa. 6) Bore diameter of the overflow pipe should be equal to or greater than the bore diameter of VDF connection. Immediately down to the next short nipple and elbow. When connected to a vertically upward, clean fluid flow decrease in, fluid will increase the underflow. 7) Be aware that the amount of clean liquid and the sludge-removing performance will change if a cartridge filter is directly connected to the overflow pipe. All the fluid will be drained through the underflow pipe once the cartridge filter starts clogging. 8) Install a pressure gauge immediately upstream of the feed and make a monthly check to assure that the normal supply pressure is maintained (i.e. an abnormal pressure of less than 0.15 MPa or equal to or greater than 0.25 MPa is not observed) and both overflow and underflow run smoothly. 9) Liquid may not be discharged from the underflow if the level of the liquid in the VDF underflow container is higher than that in the clean tank, as shown in the reference flow chart below. In this case, the solutions in the table below are recommended. Situation (Example) If a sediment tank is installed but there is no overflow from the sediment tank. Reference flowchart 3

4 Recommended solutions Install a valve for adjusting the underflow liquid volume on the VDF overflow pipe and adjust this. When doing so, install a compound gauge immediately before the valve and check that the pressure differential between the areas on either side of the VDF is between 0.15MPa and 0.25MPa. *Attach support equipment to the pipe so that a load is not placed on the main body of the VDF when the valve is attached. Solution flowchart 10) Be aware that if the level of the liquid in the VDF underflow container is lower than that in the clean tank, the underflow liquid volume (dirty liquid volume) may increase while the overflow liquid volume (clean liquid volume) decreases, as shown in the reference flow chart below. Avoid connecting an adjustment valve to the underflow to adjust the underflow liquid volume (dirty liquid volume). Strong VDF vortexes may wear out the valve and cause an imbalance in the adjustment, or sludge may accumulate and block the valve. 5 Instructions for Basic VDF UN 1) Do not reduce the bore diameter of the underflow pipe. Ensure that the hose connected to the underflow pipe does not bend in any way. 2) Install the underflow pipe vertically and ensure that the shortest pipe length is achieved to prevent sludge accumulation in the pipe. Such accumulation will impair sludge-removing performance. 3) Submerge the end of the underflow pipe between 200mm and 500mm below the surface of the liquid in the tank. If it is not submerged, air will enter, reducing the overflow volume and creating more bubbles. If it is submerged less than 200mm below the surface, air near the surface may be sucked in. If it is submerged further than 500mm below the surface, this will decrease the overflow volume. 4) Be aware that liquid will be siphoned from one tank to another if the liquid level differs between the two tanks at the time when the pumping operation stops. This may cause sludge to be transferred to the clean side. Take measures to prevent this such as installing a siphon break. Options Sludge pod A sludge pod achieves the reduction in the amount of underflow by concentrating separated sludge. An example of how a sludge pod is used Overflow (Clean liquid) Pressure gauge Supply port Instructions for sludge pod 1) If you want to mount an optional sludge pod to your VDF, select a sludge pod whose bore diameter is equal to or greater than the bore diameter of the underflow pipe and connect the pod to the underflow pipe. 2) Open and close the underflow pipe outlet on a regular basis by using a valve. Too much sludge accumulation in the sludge pod may lead to clogging. 6 7. Repair and Warranty Information If you need repair or warranty service for the product you purchased, contact us or the distributor from whom you purchased it. The free-repair warranty we offer is as follows: 1. We offer free repair within one year from the delivery date. 2. If a product has any defect or damage caused by NIKUNI s faulty design or poor workmanship within the warranty period while it is being used properly, it will be repaired for no charge. 3. However, repair will be charged in the following cases: 1)Any defect or damage that manifests itself after the expiration of the warranty period 2)Any defect or damage caused by abnormal use or storage 3)Any defect or damage due to fire, natural disaster, or other force majeure 4)Any defect or damage resulting from the replacement of any parts by the customer 5)Any defect or damage resulting from repair or modification by the customer 4. This warranty does not cover any other expenses associated with the defect that has occurred during the normal use of the product. If you suspect/detect an abnormal condition during the use of the product, immediately stop the operation to check if there really is a defect. If you find any defect, contact us immediately and state the type name and serial number given on the nameplate as well as details of the defect. 5. Differences in the warranty for products used in Japan and those used in foreign countries or region are as follows: 1) If a product has any defect or damage caused by NIKUNI s manufacturing fault within the warranty period while it is being used properly, repair part(s) will be provided for no charge. 2) Defective part(s) shall be returned to us for our investigation of the problem; however, replacement part(s) may be sent prior to receipt of the return depending on the circumstances. In such a case, defective part(s) should be returned later for our investigation. If the investigation proves that we are not responsible for the defect, replacement part(s) will be charged.
