5 Early History: The first owner was Fred Schraegle of Lansing, Michigan. Fred purchased the car as a demo vehicle from Volkswagen Lansing on July 18, The original purchase price was $ tax and title included (see attachment 1). At that time Volkswagen Lansing was located at 5122 N. Grand River Avenue and was owned and operated by Paul Kovar Sr.? The building is still in existence and is now a garage door sales and service facility. The building is located next to Brooks Import Cars, a venerable old Lansing sports car shop. Brooks was principally a British sports car shop specializing in MG s and Triumphs although they did service Alfa Romeos. The original Volkswagen Lansing shop on Grand River were the car was purchased.

7 Shortly after Fred purchased the car in July 1956 he began racing the 356 around the upper Midwest with some success. On September 2, 1956 Fred took a first place at the Superdome in Grand Rapids a second first was to follow as well as a first overall in the Economy Class in a SCCA-SSCC sponsored event in The Grand Rapids Speedrome was originally a ¼ mile dirt track see for additional information see Throughout 1956 Fred competed in a variety of events with the Porsche. In September 1956 he entered the Chicago Region SCCA Lake Michigan Miglia as well as the SCCA Central Western Michigan Region Mid-Summer Night Rally which he also entered in That autumn also saw the Porsche at the Johnson Park (Grand Rapids) Hillclimb in both 1956 and Winter didn t stop Fred from racing in February 1957 another first place in sports cars at a SSCC sponsored Ice Run held at Crystal Lake, Michigan. Later that year a 4th place I the SCCA Rally to Ithaca. I m fortunate to have the trophies and memorabilia from these events. Fred also participated in some of the first road races to be held at the newly constructed Road America track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, which replaced the former street circuit. In September Fred competed in the Road America 500, a professional race, sponsored by the Chicago Region SCCA and finished 5th. Sometime in the mid to late 1950 s Fred purchased a Porsche 550 Spyder which he began campaigning in SCCA regional and National events. I suspect that the 356 was used strictly as a road car after that, although I haven t been able to confirm this. A L U X U R I O U S AUTO S AL O N

8 I m not sure what happened to the 550 Spyder, I was told that Fred sold the car to a fellow pilot and professor at Michigan State University. The car was garaged at the Lansing Airport and the son of the professor took the car out on the roads surrounding the airport and crashed the car killing its young driver. This is not confirmed, but the source is creditable. Fred was later purchased a black 1968 Mustang fastback which he continued to race. I believe in the mid to late 1970 s Fred was diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis which would ultimately take his life. Fred s wife Dee Schraegle keep the car, refusing several offers to sell the car. I first saw the car sitting outside of Dee s house on fall day while I was walking our dog Cooper. It was the perfect 356, clean, a lovely metallic green and not restored and with this simple Nurburgring sticker on the side window. It was fate, my first Grand Prix was the 1963 German Grand Prix and the start of my love for racing that still exists today. After several years of talking and trying to purchase the car Dee called one day and asked if I was still interested in the car. Now, Dee is a sharp women, especially when it comes to cars, and their wasn t going to be any bargains had if I wanted the car. So with a payment plan in hand and a more than understanding wife we were able to purchase the car which we did in February 2000.
