6 Presidents Message To all members of Motor-Stadt Region, please attend the Dec. 7 dinner meeting at 5:00 at the Coral Gables in East Lansing. This is a annual event, where members can come up to speed, with other members. Relax, and enjoy the evening. There was a Chicago Region Concours Judge Training Seminar held on Nov. 2, in Highland Park, Illinois. Jackie & I attended this well organized event, the 10th produced in Chicago. Patrick Yanahan was the Chief Instructor. Pat really knows his stuff, regarding the inspection procedures for Concours Judging. There is a very complex system, yet more simple when broken down into separate components. When the photo s are ready, a full article will be in the next newsletter. Best to all. 7 Motorstadt Annual Membership Meeting The Motorstadt Region will hold it s annual membership meeting on December 7th at Coral Gables Restaurant. There will be a meet and greet between 5:00 and 5:30 with a cash bar. Appetizers will be provided by the club. We will begin dinner at 5:30 and each family is responsible for their own tab. This is a great time to share your summer driving stories and catch up with friends. The election ballot for this years board is below for your review. 9 Street Survival Donna sponsored her nephew (Cody) to attend the Street Survival driving school put on by the SCCA and BMW clubs of southeast Michigan. These are driving schools for beginner drivers, 16, 17, maybe 18 years old. Tirerack is a corporate sponsor and I think some of these schools are on their property down in Indiana. This was nothing like it in any high school drivers ed program. There were 20 kids, about equally male and female. Getting the kids up for an 800AM grid tech was the hardest part of the day. Cody was driving Jeep Cherokee. The school was held in an enormous parking lot on the campus of Oakland University. Gathering by 800AM students emptied their everyday drivers of all loose items, cell phones included. SCCA coaches directed the kids to check tire pressures, oil levels, and even brake pads and rotors. The kids were divided into two groups 1 and 2 just for convenience, none of the kids were experienced at this. The parking lot was set up with a couple of lanes defined by cones. Before anything but introductions they set out to accelerate over about 100 yards, then hit the brakes! Over a few attempts most had managed to hit the ABS, but many still hadn t realized how much brake there really was in the pedal. Half went to classroom and half stayed at the course half way through the morning the groups switched. Those on course sped up the braking until they got into the ABS assuming they had ABS. Only a very few cars didn t have it. The range of cars was great: Jeep Cherokee, Lincoln, Impala, Volvo, a big Chevy van, BMW, Jetta, Nissan Versa, etc.; they were to bring the car they would be normally using. (None of them were normally driving a Porsche but ) After they got into the ABS or at least a sense of the maximum straight line braking, the coaches had them turn a little while braking. SCCA volunteers were there to gather up the cones knocked aside by the skids. You can t ask your tires to turn if you re already asking them to brake as much as they can! None will forget this. Next came a rapid lane-changing exercise, at speed, then brake. Some cones went askew with this one too. Cars were encouraged to do a rapid two lane change, SUVs were limited to one. These kids didn t know each other before and all were a little timid, probably pressured to try this by parents or aunts and uncles. But, the smiles were coming out. Frankly, several looked too young to drive! They were teenagers. One kid had a Mohawk but was flogging a Prius (I thought incongruous but why not ) and the geeky kid with an old Jetta complete with aftermarket wheels and 30-series tires really wanted to be drifting. The girl in the Nissan Versa loved doing 270s whenever she had a chance; that car rotates too easily in my estimation!

10 At noon the driving stopped and the pizzas showed up. While almost everyone was feeding, the SCCA volunteers were putting cones in a circle about feet in diameter. Then, the fire truck showed up. They hooked up a hose and the volunteers began wetting the skid pad (around the outside of the circle of cones), adding big jugs of Dawn dish soap to lubricate the circle. The coaches drove the cars first to show the kids how to control the vehicle with judicious application of throttle. About this point I was wishing I was one of the kids. The Nissan was still the spin champ, but they all learned how to control a vehicle under less than ideal traction conditions. After the wet skid pad the kids went directly over to the lane changing and braking lanes to try out their wet brakes. At 400PM the kids got to take their parents/sponsors out on the skid pad and show off. It was hard to tell who was smiling more the kids or their parents. Maybe the parents were also thinking of the insurance discount they were likely to get for having their kids take one of these programs. Want to know more? Go to: Written by Bruce Pigozzi
