1 2360 Rainwater Road College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences 229/ or 229/ Tifton, GA Cooperative Extension Fax: 229/ Shipping: 115 Coastal Way (31794) or UGABeef.com October 26, Tifton HERD Program Report 1 To: FROM: Tifton HERD Consignors and Other Interested Persons Jacob Segers, Extension Animal Scientist Beef Cattle The 18th annual HERD program at the Tifton Bull Evaluation Center in Irwinville is under way. On October 3, we received 197 heifers. Thanks go to members of the HERD Team for their outstanding help. Although drought and dusty conditions have given rise to some incidence of pinkeye, overall health has been good. Once again, we tested all heifers for the presence of Persistently Infected BVD. We re pleased to report that all heifers were negative. Since this is the first report you have received, some explanation of the terms is in order. Actual Frame is the frame score based on the hip height at the October 25 weigh day. Estimated Mature Weight is calculated from actual frame score. This is only an estimate, but it will give you an idea of what size these heifers should be. Target Weight is calculated from the estimated mature weight. For optimum breeding, heifers should weigh at least 65% of mature weight by the time they are 15 months of age. In addition to the HERD Team (a committee of County Extension Agents) and the Georgia Cattlemen s Association, there are agribusiness supporters who play an important role in the HERD program. These agribusinesses have contributed products either free or at a much reduced cost. We owe Henry Jones with Zoetis a huge thank you for helping the HERD program in this regard. Our synchronization program includes the use of CIDRs, GnRH, and Lutalyse. The HERD Team made the decision to use MCR Horizon 081 as the primary sire and SS Niagara Z29 for those heifers closely related to Horizon. The synchronization program will be as follows: November 9 November 23 December 9 December 12 December 20 CIDRs are inserted. CIDRs are removed. Lutalyse is injected. Time breed all heifers; inject GnRH at breeding. Cleanup bulls are placed with the heifers (52 days). There is still time to send in your entries for the Calhoun HERD Program Deadline is November 1 st. Rules and entry form can be found on our website. The Evaluation Center is open for visitors on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. You are welcome to visit the station during these hours. If you wish to visit on the weekends, please call Mike Keeler at 229/ Feel free to visit our website ugabeef.com for early posting of reports and a complete schedule of activities planned for the program.
