2 Join the Russell RTK Precision Farming Network Get the most accurate RTK 2.5cm satellite correction signal without installing your own radio base station Precision farming through the use of GPS guidance, variable rate seeding and yield mapping has been regarded as the future for arable farming for a number of years. Here at Russell s we have been involved in Precision Land Management (PLM) development throughout Yorkshire right from the start. The Russell RTK Network is a unique collaboration between Russell s and a group of our customers. The Network provides cost effective access to incredibly accurate RTK GPS precision farming, covering an area from Sedgefield to below the M62. What is RTK? The simple signal from a GPS satellite is fine for car navigation systems but is not accurate enough for precision farming operations. Each field task needs a specific level of pass to pass accuracy, which varies from 20cm for free to use EGNOS down to 2.5cm RTK. Historically RTK required investment in a radio base station. The Russell RTK network now offers farmers a very cost effective way to have a 2.5cm auto guidance solution for any make of tractor or machine for a small annual subscription. Richard Metcalfe runs the contracting arm of Metcalfe Farms in Leyburn. Five of his fleet of New Holland tractors now have auto guidance equipment and operate using the Russell RTK Network. Richard moved from using a basic EGNOS system and has seen great benefits in accuracy, work rate and less stress on drivers. Switching to RTK three years ago has increased our accuracy and that has led us to using it in more applications. Our main uses in addition to cultivation and drilling are mowing, raking and fertiliser spreading. We also use RTK for slurry application. Our operators are now able to concentrate on watching the machine and monitors to apply what is needed and therefore get better results. Work rates have risen, we no longer waste time and money with overlapping and the operators are less fatigued. Russell's RTK network base station coverage Jonathan Rycroft farms 1250 acres via various farming agreements from his family base at Stugdale Farm, near Flaxton, York. He and his father John invested in their own base station fitted by Russell s two years ago after having GPS auto guidance fitted on a tractor three years ago. Jonathan's base station is now part of the Russell RTK network. I was very sceptical about PLM but our sales rep David Bradley kept telling me life would be much easier with auto guidance and he was right. It has made a big difference to drilling, spraying and spreading. I don t have to concentrate on keeping my lines straight as the tractor, sprayer or spreader is driving itself. I can now look for patches where I need to plus or minus and I can keep going far longer. It also allows me to be on the phone organising the other lads. It s now what I call my green office. Cost saving is one of the main advantages of PLM. Accuracy of RTK auto guidance is now down to 2.5cms and Jonathan understands the benefits. We have no overlap where previously we would have been overapplying. If you ve a man on a machine and he s overlapping half a metre or a metre every bout is costing more than is needed. That also means he or you are on the tractor seat longer, you re wearing metal out quicker, using increased amounts of diesel and tractor hours are going up leading to earlier servicing and parts requirements. When you add up the savings you can make across 1250 acres there s no way you will want to be without it once you have it.
