9 Initiated Property Letter Planning and Development Department Land Use Planning Division January 11, 2012 Regents of the University of California c/o Real Estate Services Attn: Gordan Schanck 1111 Franklin Street, FL 6 Oakland, CA Re: Property Owner Notification of Initiation of Landmark Designation of 2626 Bancroft Way This letter is to inform the owner of the property located at 2626 Bancroft Way (University Art Museum) that on December 1, 2011, the Landmarks Preservation Commission initiated consideration of the property for designation as a City of Berkeley Landmark or Structure of Merit. A public hearing on the designation is scheduled to be conducted at the February 2, 2012 Commission meeting. You will receive a notice informing you of the public hearing. In addition, a tour of the property is scheduled to take place in a publicly noticed Special Meeting of the Commission on Thursday, January 19 th at 3:00 p.m. Pursuant to Berkeley Municipal Code (BMC) Section , each designation shall include a description of the characteristics which justify designation and a description of the features that should be preserved, and shall include the boundaries of the site. The property included in any such designation shall upon designation be subject to the controls and standards set forth in the Ordinance. In addition, if imposed by the designation, a publicly owned Landmark or Structure of Merit shall be subject to review of proposed changes in major interior architectural features. If this property is designated a City of Berkeley Landmark or Structure of Merit, it is because the Landmarks Preservation Commission wishes to honor the property by recognizing its architectural and historic significance and its contribution to the urban character of Berkeley. If this building is designated by the City of Berkeley, this property may qualify for financial incentives for the continued preservation of this resource, including use of the State Historic Building Code. Therefore, it our hope that the property owner will accept the honor of having 2626 Bancroft Way initiated in the spirit in which it is bestowed and that the building will benefit from the designation if it is approved. Please contact Senior Historic Preservation Planner Sally Zarnowitz at or szarnowitz@cityofberkeley.info if you have any questions regarding this initiation. Sincerely, Sally Zarnowitz, Secretary to the Landmarks Preservation Commission Cc: Jennifer McDougall, Physical and Environmental Planning, UC Berkeley 2120 Milvia Street, Berkeley, CA Tel: TDD: Fax: planning@ci.berkeley.ca.us
