Due to the President's Council offering no advantage or benefit to the Johannesburg Chapter and from various members feedback received, the Committee have taken the decision to withdraw our affiliation. THE COMMITTEE AND MEMBERS OF THE JOHANNESBURG CHAPTER OF STEELWINGS M/C WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT TENDER OUR RESIGNATION FROM THE PRESIDENTS COUNCIL. STEELWINGS JHB WILL CONTINUE TO OPPERATE AS IT HAS ALWAYS DONE SINCE 1991, AS AN INDEPENDENT CHAPTER AND WILL ABIDE BY THE ORIGINAL CONSTITUTION AS ADOPTED AT A MEETING OF THE COMITTEE HELD AT JHB ON THE 14 JANUARY IT IS OUR INTENTION TO UPHOLD THE RECIPROCITY BETWEEN CHAPTERS AND TO RESPECT THEM AS LONG AS THEY ABIDE BY THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STEELWINGS M/C AND ADHERE TO THE VARIOUS TRADE MARKS GRANTED. 2 Last Sunday Breakfast Run was to the Hornbill Lodge in Magaliesburg. There will be no official Breakfast Run this Sunday as it is Africa Bike Week in Margate Africa Bike Week The long awaited Africa Bike week is on 24 April to 27 April A schedule of all activities for Africa Bike week is available on A reminder that the pose is leaving from the Total garage just outside Alberton on the freeway at 08:00hrs sharp. It is suggested you insure you are there at 07:30hrs latest if you want to grab coffee & something to eat as the next time you will eat will be lunch at Nottingham Road Hotel four hours later. After lunch we make our way to Kingsway our last stop before Margate. As you already know, we are bringing our Steelwings Big Banner which we hope to hang outside the Mugg & Bean downstairs from the Boulevard & Rendezvous Hotel the site of our HQ for the rally. We will be leaving Margate at 07:00hrs sharp on Tuesday 27 April Don t forget to bring your cameras as this will be an event you will definitely want to remember!! See you there

5 DULLSTROOM One Nighter There is a weekend away ride on 5 & 6 June 2010 to Dullstroom. Mishka is reserving rooms at the Transvaal Inn. More details will be sent out to after ABW. MAGOEBESKLOOF Weekend Away Ride As stated in the last newsletter, here is a reminder that we have reserved rooms at the Magoebaskloof Hotel in August from the 7th - 9th August for a weekend away ride. Details to follow! Merchandise We making simple black & white t-shirts with our Steelwings Logo on the back & a small one on the front, long sleeved for winter & short sleeved for summer. It is important to understand the dynamics behind cold tyres vs. hot tyres. The most important factor is friction/traction. Above a certain minimum speed, a two wheeled vehicle is stable as long as adequate traction is available. This can be demonstrated by standing beside a bicycle & walking it slowly ahead while leaning it to one side, the handle bars will automatically turn in the direction of the lean. That effect sufficiently provides stability above a certain minimum speed provided that the adequate traction is available. Gyroscopic effects add to the stability. The two forces work whether the two-wheel vehicle is going straight ahead or turning. When turning, the tyres must have sufficient traction to resist the radial forces, or else the two-wheel vehicle will not remain upright. There is a difference between a car s tyre & that of a bike when it comes to traction, contact area & heat build up. A bike tyre (BT) is much more unforgiving in the cold than a car tyre (CT). A BT has tread area to better support consistent traction at high lean angles. The rounded shape results in a very small area of contact with the road at any lean angle. The small contact area results in much higher pressure on the small BT contact area than on the much larger contact area of a CT. Small contact area & high pressure result in a higher normal operating temperature due to the higher *hysteresis* loads on the small contact area. BTs are made with harder rubber than CTs in order to allow

7 reasonable wear on that small contact patch, & this harder rubber is formulated to provide the best traction at a much higher ideal operating temperature than a CT. For best traction, a BT must maintain a higher operating temperature than a CT. As the harder rubber on a BT has a pretty horrible traction when cold compared to the soft rubber on a CT, the BT is much more sensitive to the cold & will slide out from under you and put you on your bottom if you re not careful. It is well known that to warm up a tyre on a summer day, takes about 20 minutes or 50km & obviously it takes longer than that in winter. There is also a question about whether weaving will warm up a tyre to the extent that it will be safer on the road. Interesting research was found on the following link: *Hysteresis* refers to systems which have memory: that is, the effects of the current input to the system are not felt at the same instant. Such a system may exhibit path dependence, or rate independent memory. Hysteresis phenomena occur in magnetic materials, ferromagnetic material & ferroelectric materials, as well as in the elastic, electric & magnetic behaviour of materials, in which a lag occurs between the application and the removal force or field & its subsequent effect.
