2 News from the sidecar What s all this talk about the Branson Rally. If you have you ever been to the Missouri District GWRRA Rally in Branson, you know it s well worth the ride over. From past experience, I can tell you it s kinda like the Missouri Spring Fling, our Chapter Fun Run, the Crawfish Run and a big family reunion all rolled in to one - on steroids! Ask any Chapter I member who has been to this rally and they will tell you of the FUN, the FOOD and the FRIENDS that you will enjoy when you participate in Branson. Many of us go year after year. We get the same room in the same hotel. We even make our reservation for next year as we check out. What goes on at the Rally? To begin the event, if you pre-register, you get a ticket in your packet for a FREE early bird dinner at the local Cracker Barrel Thursday night! On Friday and Saturday, they have various seminars, and guided and self-guided rides around the area. Free lunch is provided both days, plus you get two $7 coupons good at some great local restaurants! Friday night there is a Light Show at the Branson Landing outdoor mall. All of the bikes which attend the rally usually participate in the event. What FUN it is as all the bikes ride down the center of the street while the shoppers applaud, cheer and take our picture! It makes a great Motorist Awareness event as the shoppers look at our beautiful Gold Wings and talk to us about our love of riding. After the day s events, the evening might be spent sitting around the parking lot in smaller groups visiting with friends from near and far and telling tall tales of our various motorcycle adventures. At night many take advantage of discount coupons and attend the various shows and attractions in Branson. If you tire of looking at all the Motorcycle stuff for sale, or visiting with old and new friends, then you can go ride some of the best motorcycle roads in the country! George and Carol White, Donna and Dennis Albee, Bruce and Jan Watkins, Ernie and Cindy Deason, Jerry and Sherry Goodman, and Johnnie and Kathy Haupt, just to name a few, return year after year to participate in the fun and visit with friends they have met from all across the USA. We hope to see some new Chapter I faces there this year! NEW this year... Chapter I has one Free Missouri District Rally registration to give away to a Chapter I member! You must pre-register for the Rally to be eligible to win this prize. Note: the current Chapter I Couple of the Year, Individual of the Year, or anyone else otherwise compensated by the District, are not eligible for the FREE registration. Plan to participate, participate, participate at this FUN event.you will be glad you did! It s not the Destination... it s the Journey!!! Bruce and Jan Ride safe...
3 MAY IS MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH Each year, May is designated Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. States, cities and motorcycle organizations across the country conduct a variety of activities to promote the importance of motorist awareness and sharing the road with motorcyclists. Motorist awareness is an important component of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations comprehensive motorcycle safety program. Over two-thirds of fatal motorcycle crashes involve a motorcycle and another vehicle. The motorist either does not see the oncoming motorcycle at all, or does not see the motorcycle in time to avoid a crash. It is important for motorists to know that their actions affect the safety of motorcyclists. A motorist and a motorcyclist may take different actions for the same driving or highway situation. For example, a motorist may ignore a piece of road debris; however, that same piece of road debris may be deadly to a motorcyclist. As a MOTORIST or PASSENGER, there are some steps to become more aware of motorcyclists: RESPECT the motorcyclist. Remember the motorcycle is a vehicle with all of the privileges of any vehicle on the roadway. Give the motorcyclist a full lane of travel. LOOK OUT - Look for the motorcyclist on the highway, at intersections, when a motorcyclist may be making a left turn, and when a motorcyclist may be changing lanes. Clearly signal your intentions. ANTICIPATE a motorcyclist s maneuver. Obstructions (debris, potholes, etc.) that you may ignore or not notice can be deadly for a motorcyclist. Predict evasive actions. ALLOW plenty of space. Don t follow a motorcycle too closely. Allow enough room for the motorcyclist to take evasive actions, because Ultimately, we are responsible for Arriving Alive Marlene Cloude, Ch I M. A. P. D. Marlene Cloude MAP Director Simplicity From A Simpleton We all have gas. We all need gas. It s just one of those things we have to live with as owners of motorcycles and other things with engines. But, what kind, of the many fuels offered, is best for your machine? If you have a favorite gasoline manufacturer, supplier or gas station, there is no need for you to make any changes. All are fine for your engines even though some may have slight differences for those of you who are particular about such differences. Continued on next page
4 The main differences between gasoline choices are clearly labeled on the pump when you start pushing buttons on the panel. You are offered three grades of gasoline on most pumps. Here is the simplest I can make it for you to suggest which grade to use: Choose the cheapest grade and if your engine does NOT spark knock while using it, you have made the best choice. I ll not go in to spark knock in this article. If you don t know what it is, ask someone you trust and let them explain what it is and why you should avoid it. Unless you have a Special engine, the cheapest of the three grades normally offered is going to give you the performance you expect. Gasoline manufacturers add extra chemicals to their product to keep it from spark knocking in engines with special needs. The more anti-knock chemical they mix into their product to control spark knock, the more they charge for it. The less they mix in, the cheaper it is. If you don t have spark knock with the cheaper choice, stay with it. The higher fuel grades from the same manufacturer do not have more energy in them or make your engine run better. You will just be burning more of their chemicals trying to solve a problem you don t have. Dick McClard GWRRA Missouri Chapter I ps: There are two schools of thought about motorcycle safety. #1. The other drivers on the road do not see you and are going to run you over. #2. The other drivers on the road see you and are going to try and run you over. Motorcycle Tire Safety How many of you get down on the ground and really check the tread on your tires on a regular basis, checking for nails, screws, cracks, cuts, etc? How about the air pressure? I know I don t check mine as often as I should. As we age, it gets harder to get down and even harder to get back up, but it is something that has to be done. One day in late March, I was standing beside the bike in the garage after a ride. The sun was shining in the window just right and I just happened to look down at the front tire. Something caught my eye that I probably wouldn t have noticed during a straight-on inspection. There was a tiny bulge on the edge of the tread. If the wheel had not been in just the right position in the sunlight, I probably wouldn t have seen it. It was so small at first, that when I would ask someone to look at it, sometimes even I had a hard time finding it. I kept a close watch on it, but continued riding on it, with my thinking this tire is almost brand new, it must be just a blemish. I did, however, have it looked at by someone with more tire expertise than I, and was told that it would only get bigger. This week, after our Old Man s Ride, I noticed that it had, in fact, gotten a bit bigger. So, I went ahead and put a new tire on. My point is that we need to get down on the ground and really inspect the tires on our bikes, not just give them a quick glance. And do it regularly. Little problems can become big problems in a hurry, if we don t catch them. Norm Lake Assistant Rider Educator Norm Lake Assistant Rider Educator
