3 Presidential Perspective The San Diego Jaguar Club, like many other Jaguar clubs around the country and the world, thrives when members participate in club events and share their passion for the marque. This is especially true for members who can devote time and effort to assisting with club affairs and management. It is in this light that I would like to welcome the newest member of the SDJC Board of Directors, Dave Allen, who will serve as your treasurer in 2016, and hopefully beyond. Dave, Marie and son Mathew joined SDJC in June, 2014, and immediately became involved with club activities. The family owns three Jaguars, one being a near perfect, Driven-Class 1987 XJS as judged at the 2015 SDJC concours. New members bring a fresh perspective to the club, especially when they join the Board of Directors and help frame the future. Thanks, Dave, for jumping in with both feet. A quick read of the minutes from the first Board meeting of 2016 in this issue will reveal that we are undertaking new initiatives in the months ahead. The first of these, spearheaded by Mark Hodges, has been to set up PayPal as a means to pay for club events. Having the option to pay via PayPal, with a few clicks on icons and a very modest fee, is another step in providing convenience for club members. Of course, I don t see the club turning down cash or checks anytime soon. We ll always accept your money in any form! While on the topic of money, your Board is continuing to assess ways to ensure your dues and payments go as far as possible to help provide the maximum value for your money. One or more initiatives will be proposed in the months ahead to meet this challenge. By the time you read this, the drive to and overnight stay at the Borrego Springs Resort and Spa on January will be a pleasant memory for the 40+ participants now signed up. I personally like to think of this as the Grant Rummell Memorial Drive since he and Nedra organized a similar drive a few years ago that was memorable for all of us who were there. Hopefully you have also signed up for the San Diego Safari Park Tram Tour and Buffet Lunch on Sunday, February 7, made possible by Ray Waite. As of the time of writing this column, we have close to 60 members participating for what I m sure will be a unique view of the Park. Plans for March are still in the development stage, but will likely center on Balboa Park and the San Diego Auto Museum. Check sdjag.com for details in the weeks ahead or, better yet, wait for one of Bob Proctor s catchy s. I only wish I had his sense of humor. 7 Dealer Display News Dave Kingston s 1966 Jaguar Series 1 E-Type OTS Recently totally restored two owner car. The original 4.2 liter engine has been completely overhauled. It has been fitted with a billet crank shaft increasing the stroke and engine capacity to 4.6 litres. The pistons and connecting rods are light weight, and the intake and exhaust manifolds have been tuned. The dyno tested engine produces 340 hp and 380 ft lbs of torque. This compares with the original factory spec of 265 hp and 280 ft lbs of torque. To handle the added power, the brakes, clutch and cooling system have been upgraded. The original 4 speed gearbox has been replaced with a 5 speed box. To add to the excitement, a genuine Abarth exhaust has been installed. As might be expected with all this power in car that only weighs about 2,600 lbs., things really can get exciting sometimes! We hope that more members will consider providing their cars for our Dealer Display Program to help promote our club. If your classic Jaguar is just doing garage time during the off season, perhaps you should consider displaying it on the showroom floor of our sponsoring dealer, Jaguar San Diego. Owner David Murphy and General Manager Richard Farler would greatly appreciate it. In the past two years, more than a dozen of you have participated in this program. The cars are safe and secure in our SDJC corner of the showroom along with our trophy case. Please contact our Dealer Display Representative and Jaguar Tracks Editor, Jim Hallameyer, if you would like to participate. He can be reached at jimhallameyer@cox.net or February 2016 Jaguar Tracks 7

11 The British Invasion News from the San Diego Automotive Museum article by Jim Hallameyer The San Diego Automotive Museum has been a fixture in Balboa Park for as long as I can remember. They change their exhibits every four months. The month of February marks the beginning of a new exhibit which may be of interest to San Diego Jaguar Club members. The exhibit will be called, The British Invasion and will feature cars of the post WWII era introduced to the U.S. by our soldiers as they returned home from the war. Many of us recall the Jaguars, MGs, Triumphs, Mini Coopers, Morgans, (the list can go on seemingly forever) that our GIs fell in love with. They became quite common in our towns and on our roads. Three of our SDJC members have provided cars for this exhibit. Dick Cavicke will make available to the museum his black 1953 XK 120 SE FHC. Dave Putnam s silver 1950 Mark V saloon will be there as will my Primrose 1969 E-Type OTS. Various members of the British Car Club Council will also have cars in the exhibit. An attempt by member Pete Pickslay, our SD Auto Museum Rep, and myself to put together a formal event for our club at the Museum in March failed due to logistical reasons. But there s nothing to prevent interested SDJC members from getting together in groups and setting aside a relaxing Saturday or Sunday between now and the end of May in order to get acquainted, or re-acquainted, with Balboa Park and its beautiful attractions, especially the San Diego Automotive Museum! Go to to see all the restaurants and attractions available in Balboa Park. Some of the cars you may see at The British Invasion. The following page contains a map of the Park with the locations of some of the attractions. Special note is made of the Automotive and Air and Space Museums. Information about parking lots and tram service is also noted. February 2016 Jaguar Tracks 11
12 The British Invasion (cont.) Balboa Park has parking lots in various locations. In order to help visitors get around, trams are free and move people who may not be able to walk the distances between the buildings. 24 The green and red lines on the map are the routes of the trams that operate every ten to thirty minutes. The red circles with a T in them designate the tram station stops. Parking lot A is directly in front of the Auto Museum (number 2 on the map) and the Air and Space Museum (number 1). 2 A Most of the other Museums can be accessed from the Tram stop at the Plaza de Panama (number 24). Restaurants are also in this area. 1 In good weather, there are places to picnic on the expansive lawns. Access to the parking lots is off Park Blvd. which is easily reached from Interstate 5 and State Route 163. Nuts & Bolts Some members have reported concern about garage door security. There are reports of thieves snaking a stiff wire, with a hook shaped on the end, through the rubber seal at the top of the door in an attempt to snare the rope pull attached to the release lever of the trolley. If successful in releasing the trolly from the large acme screw it rides on, these guys can then raise your door. If there is no handle on the door, they ram a tire iron or piece of rebar through the soft aluminum at the bottom of the door and use it to leverage up the door. Cars, tools and other valuables have disappeared due to this creative thievery. Removing the rope still leaves the possibility they can snag the lever itself. A better solution is to put a large zip tie through the hole in front of the lever on the trolley. This prevents release of the lever. See the photos below provided by LLoyd Prosser. If none of these solutions apply to your particular make and model of garage doors, Lloyd suggests loud audible alarms, large four legged creatures that bark loud and bite, or perhaps a higher level of security consisting of Smith & Wesson or Colt 45. 13 By Paul Novak, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club This article provides information about the Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) Concours d Elegance Program to help you understand more about this interesting aspect of Jaguar ownership. If you are a seasoned concours Entrant, I hope this article will help you enjoy it more. If you have never participated, I hope this will encourage you to join in the fun and excitement Concours Judges Training. Preparations have begun for our Sunday 17 July Concours being held at Spanish Landing Park. Provided below is a summary of the three types of Concours related training that I will offer again this year. Watch for the announcements of the dates and locations in future issues of Jaguar Tracks. Concours 101. A classroom presentation, show and tell, and informal discussion of JCNA concours for those unfamiliar with concours but interested in learning about it. No experience is required, you only need an interest in learning more about JCNA concours. One weekend session is planned. Concours 201. A session to get Apprentice Judges and Judges whose certification has expired up to speed so that they can participate as Certified Judges at our 2016 Concours. Experience as an Apprentice Judge or former JCNA certified Judge is required. Hands on judging of Jaguars using official score sheets, JCNA Concours Rule Books and JCNA Judge s Guides will be emphasized. One weekend session is planned. Concours 301. The formal annual Judges Refresher Training required each year by JCNA to recertify Judges for the cur rent concours year. Includes a classroom presentation, a review of the more important aspects of the JCNA Concours Rule Book, and discussions of the Rule Book changes for The written 2016 Judges Test will be administered. Everyone is welcome to attend. This is an excellent way for Judges and Entrants to learn more about JCNA Concours Rules. Two weekend sessions are planned. JCNA Concours Champion, Driven, and Special Divisions. Each JCNA sanctioned Concours d Elegance provides for Entries in Champion Division, Driven Division and Special Division. Champion Division is the most demanding since it challenges its Entrants to research, prepare, and present their Jaguars in their original, authentic, and factory-delivered configuration and condition. Interiors, exteriors, engine compartments, and trunks (boots) are judged for authenticity, condition, and cleanliness. Tools and owner s manuals are judged. Driven Division also challenges the Entrant, however the Entries do not have engine compartments or trunks (boots) judged and some convenience and safety related authenticity exceptions are allowed. Exteriors and interiors are judged to the same standard as Champion Division Entries. Tools and manuals are not judged. Special Division includes factory and non-factory prepared race cars and limited production Jaguars, production Jaguars privately prepared for racing, modified production Jaguars and Jaguar powered vehicles with replica Jaguar bodies. Special Division cars are judged only for condition and cleanliness JCNA Concours in the Southwest Region. Here are the established 2016 JCNA Concours for the Southwest Region. I will update this list as JCNA approves the Concours sanctions requested by the individual clubs. 3 April International Jaguar Festival Concours Scottsdale, AZ 15 May Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles, Fullerton, CA 17 July San Diego Jaguar Club, Spanish Landing, San Diego, CA 19 August Jaguar Club of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM Looking for a Few Good Women and Men for Concours Judges. Preparations are underway for our 17 July 2016 Concours d Elegance and we are looking for members interested in becoming Certified JCNA Concours Judges. We would like to grow our current list of 12 certified Judges by a few more prior to Concours day. We are definitely looking for a few good women and men to become Concours Judges.
