Jersey Expansion Program Restructured, Genetic Recovery Enhanced By More Information At its March, 2015 meeting, the AJCA Board of Directors acted to change rules for two of the Association s animal recording services: (1) the Jersey Expansion program, identifying animals with both Jersey and other-breed genetics in their pedigrees, and (2) the Genetic Recovery program for unregistered, purebred animals exhibiting Jersey characteristics. Genetic Recovery was created by the Association in 1975 to record unregistered but purebred Jersey females and, owing to its success, has been adopted by other dairy cattle associations across the world. Jersey Expansion was implemented in 1999 to identify animals with both Jersey and other-breed genetics in their pedigrees, allowing offspring of first-generation females sired by Registered Jersey bulls to be recorded through Genetic Recovery. Action on Jersey Expansion. Jersey Expansion was separated from the Genetic Recovery program retroactive to program implementation January 1, It was restructured to provide accurate identification for breed of origin across multiple generations and define a clear pathway for animals to be recorded in the AJCA Herd Register. Under revised rules for Jersey Expansion, six continuous generations sired by Registered Jersey bulls starting with the firstgeneration female (J1) will result in an animal eligible for the AJCA Herd Register (see table). Females will be recorded at all levels (J1 through J6). Males are only eligible at the J4, J5 and J6 levels, and only when the bull and both parents are genotyped. Offspring status will advance one level (a) when sired by a bull Steps in Jersey Expansion Program, Effective January 1, 1999 Pedigree Inheritance from Prefix Pedigree (JE designates AJCA Herd Register status) Jersey Other Breed J1 JE x Other Breed J2 JE x (JE x Other) J3 JE x [JE x (JE x Other)] J4 JE x [JE x JE x (JE x Other)] J5 JE x [JE x JE x JE x (JE x Other)] J6 JE x [JE x JE x JE x JE x (JE x Other)] HR JE x [JE x JE x JE x JE x JE x (JE x Other)] recorded in the AJCA Herd Register (HR status, no prefix) or (b) when one parent is three or more generations higher than another. For all other pedigree combinations, offspring status will be no higher than that of the lowest status parent. AJCA Herd Register status is achieved by offspring of J6 and HR parents. The descendants of J1 females now recorded by the AJCA will be assigned a new prefix according to their status in this recording system and replacement certificates issued to owners. Action on Genetic Recovery. Modifications to the Genetic Recovery program, effective March 14, 2015, now require an Original Animal (OA prefix) to have a Herd Register status parent (sire or dam) or else be qualified by genotyping. The lowest step at which a bull will be recorded will be at the third step, GR, provided the bull and both parents are genotyped. Genetic Recovery continues to serve the original intent of bringing purebred but grade Jerseys into the AJCA database, commented AJCA President Chris Sorenson. The changes made by the Board of Directors make it even stronger by adding another level of pedigree information or applying genomic testing tools. The result will be more complete pedigrees earlier and more accurate genetic evaluations. Action on Gratitude Descendants. The Board revisited decisions made in 2010 regarding the registration of OA Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude A numeric code in brackets is now part of the registration name for this cow and all descendants, with Gratitude labeled {1}, her progeny {2}, and continuing through six generations. This Board action gives Jersey owners the additional information they requested about extended members of this family, explained Sorenson. This evaluation release also implements the Gold Book for females and new presentation of reports. Because of the changes in AJCA animal recording programs and at the direction of the AJCA Board of Directors, many reports from the CDCB genetic evaluations have been divided by registry status: (a) Herd Register (HR, no prefix), and (b) Genetic Recovery (GR, PR and OA females, and eligible males) and Jersey Expansion (J1 through J6 for females, and eligible males). The All Summarized Bulls report remains a consolidated list sorted alphabetically by the first letter of the registration name, excluding any prefix. This also applies to a variety of reference and locator lists. The Top 10 Bulls by Category report is based upon all A.I. (code A) and foreign (code F) bulls marketed in the U.S., regardless of registry status. To accommodate this increase in information, only bull reports will be included in the Green Book and a Gold Book has been added for females. The cutoff for the female Genetic Recovery-Jersey Expansion lists is determined by the lowest qualifying Jersey Performance Index () or the maximum number of females included on the HR list, whichever is less. The Jersey Genetic Summary with monthly genomic updates is available 24/7 online at

DPR measures the percentage of non-pregnant cows that become pregnant during each 21-day interval where 1 in PTA DPR equals 4 fewer days open. HCR and CCR measure the percentage of inseminated heifers or cows that become pregnant at each service where 1 in PTA means more likely to become pregnant during that estrus cycle compared with an evaluation of 0. Expected Future Inbreeding (EFI): Estimate of future progeny inbreeding, assuming that an animal is mated randomly. Genomic G Codes: GT, animal has been genotyped using one of a variety of offered chip densities (e.g., GT13K with 13K chip); GI for genotype through imputation from progeny, but not genotyped; and GA, inclusion of information from genotyped ancestors. Genomic Future Inbreeding (GFI): Estimate of inbreeding in future offspring, based on parent s actual homozygosity and percentages of genes in common with the genotyped breed population. Genomic Predicted Transmitting Ability (GPTA): Estimate of genetic merit for indicated trait calculated from (1) information from genotypes or imputed genotypes of ancestors DNA analysis of functional genes inherited by a particular animal; plus (2) individual performance and (3) pedigree information. Jersey Performance Index TM (): Combines PTA or GPTA Protein,, Functional Trait Index (FTI), PL, SCS and three fertility traits (DPR, CCR, HCR) with the emphasis of 43 P : 15 F : 15 FTI : 10 PL : 6 SCS : 7 DPR : 2 CCR : 2 HCR. Ranks animals for combined genetic merit for production, type and fitness traits. Jersey Udder Index TM (JUI): Based on the Functional Trait Index (FTI) weightings for udder traits (refer to formula, page 6). Net Merit dollars (NM$, also CM$, FM$ and GM$): Expected lifetime profit as compared with the breed base cows born in 2010, for four production/economic conditions. Described at arsusda.gov/reference/nmcalc-2014.htm. Parent Average: Estimate of an individual s eventual PTA based on the average of the parents traditional PTAs. Percentile: A ranking relative to the population. For example, a bull with a 90 percentile ranking or a heifer that is a P9 is ranked higher than 90 percent of the population. Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA): The best predictor of genetic merit; specifically what a bull or cow is expected to transmit for a particular trait to their offspring. See also GPTA (above). Productive Life (PL): Time in the milking herd before removal by voluntary culling, involuntary culling, or death. Sire Conception Rate (SCR): Phenotypic predictor of bull fertility, expressed as a relative conception rate, measured for the first seven (7) breedings of the cow (no heifer breedings). Somatic Cell Score (SCS): Indicator trait for mastitis resistance based on the direct measure of somatic cells in milk samples. 4

2015 Jersey Performance Index () Calling Jersey Performance Index TM a strategy for breed improvement, the AJCA Board of Directors authorized updates including adjusted trait weights and the addition of new traits for implementation with the December 2014 genetic evaluations. The objective of Jersey Performance Index TM is to increase lifetime net income. The 2015 version of was developed from the most extensive evaluation of production, longevity and health data ever undertaken for a TM update, conducted by geneticist Kent Weigel of the University of Wisconsin Madison. In 2015, 58 of the index s value is placed Calculation of the Jersey Performance Index on production traits (PTA protein and PTA Beginning with December 2014 genetic evaluations, TM is calculated as follows: fat). The remaining 2015 = (43 x PTA protein / SD) + (15 x PTA fat / SD) 42 is contributed by + (10 x PTA Productive Life / SD) + [6 x (3 - PTA Somatic Cell Score) / SD)] six health, fitness and + (7 x PTA Daughter Pregnancy Rate / SD) + (2 x PTA Cow Conception Rate / SD) longevity traits: the + (2 x PTA Heifer Conception Rate / SD) + Functional Trait Index Functional Trait Index 2015 (FTI), and USDA where Functional Trait Index equals the PTAs of linear type traits weighted by their relative PTAs for Productive economic contribution to 2015 (see Table 2). Life (PL), Somatic Cell Score (SCS), and three fertility traits: Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR), Cow Conception Rate (CCR), and Heifer Conception Rate, HCR). Traits and their relative weights in 2015, with changes from the previous version noted in parentheses, are 43 PTA protein (+1); 15 PTA fat (no change); 15 Functional Trait Index (no change); 10 Productive Life (-2); 6 Somatic Cell Score (no change); and 7 Daughter Pregnancy Rate (-3), plus 2 Cow Conception Rate (new) and 2 Heifer Conception Rate (new) (see also Table 1). While most traits of the TM index have trended in desired directions since the previous update in 2010, fertility traits have not been improving, leading to the decision to increase selection pressure by adding the cow and heifer conception traits. Also, because the demand for and value of protein continues to grow in domestic and international milk markets, the slight shift of 43 protein to 15 fat puts additional selection pressure on protein yield. Regrouping by functional categories, production receives 58 of the emphasis in the new formula. Udder health at 20 is a combination of direct selection for lower Somatic Cell Score (especially important to capture quality premiums), plus udder traits included in the Functional Trait Index (FTI). There is 11 on herd life, through PTA Productive Life plus the body and feet traits in FTI. Lastly, 11 is placed on fertility. Selection for an index of economically important traits is the optimal way to achieve breed improvement, Dr. Weigel observed, however, the index must be updated periodically to ensure that it reflects current economic conditions on the farm, as well as current strengths and weaknesses of the breed. The 2015 revision focused on prediction of lifetime net profit from production, type, health, longevity, and fertility traits that are available early in life, with an emphasis on using the most recent cow population possible and achieving a balance between timely input prices and stability of these prices over time. Method Used For 2015 Updates Unlike previous updates, which included only cows with completed productive life, Weigel also analyzed cows from the current population. Records from 328,312 Jersey cows with first calving from January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2012 were provided through the cooperation of the dairy records processing centers (DRPCs). A total of 264,681 cows had left the herd at the time of analysis, and their lifetime profit records were considered as complete. An additional 63,631 cows were still in the herd, and their records were considered as in-progress, such that their profit totals to date were compared with those of contemporary cows in the same year of first calving. Up to nine lactations per cow were used, and lifetime profit records for cows that remained in the herd after nine lactations were treated as in-progress. Income sources considered were from protein, fat and total (continued on next page) Table 1. History of Traits and Weights () Used to Calculate PTI (1998) and Jersey Performance Index. Year Protein FTI PL SCS FUI DPR CCR HCR

solids, as well as milk quality premiums, salvage value and calf value. Expenses included feed for lactation, growth and maintenance during the rearing, lactating and dry periods, as well as breeding costs and replacement costs. Input prices for milk, feed, salvage, and calf value were from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, whereas input prices for replacement females were from the Jersey Marketing Service. Prices represented weighted averages from the past three years. FTI Updates, Presentation of Jersey Udder Index Of the eight components of TM, only one the AJCA Functional Trait Index captures the effects of type traits within production on lifetime profitability. It assesses how functional type traits are important to the Jersey cow s economic survival. As such, it pinpoints where improvement is needed and needed most, and where opportunities for further gains are possible. A new approach was used by Dr. Weigel to delineate the direct contribution of each type trait within the Functional Trait Index to Jersey Performance Index TM. In the geneticist s words, the relationships are now transparent. Table 2 shows that what will make the most difference in improving Jersey profitability going forward is increasing selection pressure on udder traits. But as always, some traits are more important than others, a fact clearly depicted in the updated Jersey Udder Index TM, which is derived from FTI. Udder Depth is the most important, followed by three traits (Fore Udder Attachment, Udder Cleft and Rear Udder Height) that have similar influence on cow survival and lifetime net income. Jersey Udder Index TM was previously reported in PTA form. Now the JUI number is simply how many points udder traits add (or subtract) from Jersey Performance Index TM. In short, JUI s meaning is linked directly to an animal s. To illustrate, A, F and G code bulls in the December 2014 evaluation averaged 10.6 for JUI. The average was 121. So for the hypothetical average Jersey bull at 121, 10.6 of those points are from JUI. Think of them as udder points. Fertility Traits Direct selection for fertility was added to TM in 2005 and has seen increasing emphasis with each subsequent update. In Table 2. Relative weights for specific traits and trait groups in Jersey Performance Index Relative Overall Trait Group Weight () Specific Trait (Direction) Weight () Production 58.0 Protein (+) 43.0 (+) 15.0 Health 27.0 Productive Life (+) 10.0 Somatic Cell Score (-) 6.0 Daughter Pregnancy Rate (+) 7.0 Cow Conception Rate (+) 2.0 Heifer Conception Rate (+) 2.0 Functional Trait Index: Udder 13.8 Udder Depth (+) 5.1 Fore Udder Attachment (+) 2.6 Udder Cleft (+) 2.1 Rear Udder Height (+) 1.9 Teat Placement (+) 1.0 Teat Length (-) 1.0 Rear Udder Width (+) 0.1 Body 1.0 Stature (-) 0.6 Rump Width (+) 0.2 Strength (-) 0.1 Rump Angle (-) 0.1 Dairy Form (+) 0.0 Mobility 0.2 Foot Angle (+) 0.1 Rear Legs (-) 0.1 Calculation of the Jersey Udder Index This index is the sum of PTAs for udder traits multiplied by their percentage contribution to the animal s Jersey Performance Index 2015 : JUI 15 = [(2.6 x FU / SD FU) + (1.9 x RH / SD RH) + (0.1 x RUW / SD RUW) + (5.1 x UD / SD UD) + (2.1 x UC / SD UC) + (1.0 x TP / SD TP) + (-1.0 x TL / SD TL)] addition to Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR), 2015 includes two new fertility measures, bringing total emphasis to 11 in the index. The first, Cow Conception Rate (2), measures the lactating cow s ability to conceive defined as percentage of inseminated cows that become pregnant at each service. A CCR of 1 implies that daughters of this bull (or cow) are 1 more likely to become pregnant during that lactation than daughters of a bull with an evaluation of 0. The second, Heifer Conception Rate (2), refers to the maiden heifer s ability to conceive defined as percentage of inseminated heifers that become pregnant at each service. An HCR of 1 implies that daughters of this bull (or heifer) are 1 more likely to become pregnant as a heifer than daughters of a bull with an evaluation of 0. Daughter Pregnancy Rate (7) is defined as the percentage of non-pregnant cows that become pregnant during each 21-day period. A bull with a DPR of 1 indicates that his daughters are 1 more likely to become pregnant during an estrus cycle than a bull with an evaluation of 0. Each 1 increase in PTA DPR equals a decrease of four (4) days in days open. For detailed information on USDA traits included in 2015, refer to the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) website at Summary Jersey Performance Index TM ( TM ) is a breed-specific selection tool that has been continually reviewed and updated based on sound science and relative to the economics of dairying includes eight traits as follows: 43 Protein : 15 : 15 FTI : 10 PL : 7 DPR : 6 SCS : 2 CCR : 2 HCR. Overall, 58 of its emphasis is on production, 20 on udder health, 11 on longevity, and 11 on fertility. Expected genetic response from 2015 is annual gains of 5.2 lbs. PTA protein and 6.2 lbs. PTA fat, 6.7 days of Productive Life, plus changes in desirable directions for somatic cell score and cow fertility. The Board action to update TM is grounded in science and the economics of profitability, commented AJCA President Chris Sorenson. We are confident that it charts the proper course for selecting productive, fertile, healthy, long-lasting and trouble-free Jersey cows. 6

AJCA Animal Recording Systems and Registry Status The American Jersey Cattle Association records animals under provisions of the Rules for the Registration and Transfer of Jersey Cattle. Animals are recorded under one of four (4) systems in the Association s permanent database. Herd Register. Established Animals with HR status do not carry a prefix. The Association issues a green-bordered Certificate of Registration for these animals. Genetic Recovery. Adopted This program provides for identification of purebred Jerseys with step-wise progression to HR status with the continued use of HR-status bulls: 1. OA (Original Animal), a female with a known HR sire or out of a known HR dam, or qualified by genotyping. This animal is recorded with the prefix of OA and issued a gold-bordered Certificate of Identification. 4. Offspring status will advance one level (a) when sired by a bull recorded in the AJCA Herd Register (HR status, no prefix) or (b) when one parent is three or more generations higher than another. For all other pedigree combinations, offspring status will be no higher than that of the lowest status parent. 5. AJCA Herd Register status is achieved by offspring of J6 and HR parents. The Association issues a blue-bordered Certificate of Identification for animals recorded in Jersey Expansion. Unregistered (UR). Animals with permanent identification that do not meet the requirements for any other registry status are recorded with the prefix UR and issued a gold-bordered Certificate of Identification. 2. PR (Provisional Register), the daughter of an OA dam and a known HR sire. This animal is recorded with the prefix of PR and issued a gold-bordered Certificate of Identification. 3. GR (Genetic Recovery), the daughter of a PR dam and a known HR sire, or the son of a PR dam and a known HR sire provided the bull and both parents are genotyped. This animal is recorded with the prefix of GR and issued a green-bordered Certificate of Registration. Jersey Expansion Program. Introduced This program provides for the identification of animals with both Jersey and other-breed genetics in their pedigrees. Six continuous generations sired by Registered Jersey bulls starting with the first-generation female (J1) will result in an animal eligible for the AJCA Herd Register. 1. The first-generation crossbred female sired by a HR Jersey bull or out of a HR Jersey female is recorded with the prefix J1. 2. Females are recorded at all levels (J1 through J6). 3. Males are only eligible at the J4, J5 and J6 levels, and only when the bull and both parents are genotyped. Required Information. The American Jersey Cattle Association requires the following information for all animals to be recorded: (a) birth date, (b) permanent identification in the form of tattoo in the ear or AJCA-approved double-matching tamper-evident eartags, and (c) parent information (pedigree). The animal name is selected by the First Owner. Use the following tables to determine the AJCA registry status of females or males based on the registry status of the parents. Recording Fees. Refer to the Fees for Programs and Services for recording fees. Lower Herd Register fees apply by being a member of the American Jersey Cattle Association and/ or submitting applications on infojersey or by electronic file. Registration is included in REAP (Registration Equity Appraisal Performance) for animals under six months of age. For complete details on programs and fees, contact Herd Services at 614/ or records@usjersey.com. Fig. 1. Registration Status for Females in Genetic Recovery Program Fig. 2. 10 The American Jersey Cattle Association Young Sire Program and Genetic Diversity Program Application for Enrollment Jersey breed progress depends upon breeders taking the lead in sampling highly qualified young sires. Do your part to continue the genetic improvement of the Jersey breed by enrolling qualifying young bulls in the AJCA Young Sire Program or the Genetic Diversity Program Young Sire Program (YSP) This program identifies outstanding young bulls at an early age to encourage early sampling for an accurate multi-herd proof. The nomination standard is a genomic PTA that equals or exceeds the 70th percentile for Jersey Performance Index, PTA pounds protein, or Net Merit dollars (NM$) of the NAAB G-code Jersey bulls. In the absence of a genomic evaluation, Parent Average may be substituted. Current qualifying levels are +167 or +36 lbs. protein or +434 NM$. Genetic Diversity Program (GDP) This program encourages the sampling of genetically diverse bulls. The genomic genetic evaluation of nominated bulls must equal or exceed the 50th percentile for Jersey Performance Index, PTA pounds protein, or Net Merit dollars (NM$) of the NAAB G-code Jersey bulls, and the bull's Genomic Future Inbreeding (GFI) must be less than 6. In the absence of a genomic evaluation, Parent Average may be substituted. Current qualifying levels are +153 or +30 lbs. protein or +400 NM$. Requirements for Both Programs Bulls must be no older than 15 months of age at the time of nomination. Inheritance from a designated carrier of Limber Legs or Rectovaginal Constriction must be less than Parentage must be qualified by genotyping and the bull listed with the AJCA. A minimum of 200 units of semen must be frozen and stored if the bull is kept alive until his first CDCB daughter evaluation summary, or a minimum of 1,000 units frozen and stored if the bull is to be slaughtered. For a YSP bull, the proving group must arrange daughter distribution to assure Reliability of at least 75 by the bull's second progeny test summary. For a GDP bull, the group must arrange daughter distribution in a minimum of 50 herds by the second progeny test summary. PROGRAM BENEFITS YSP and GDP bulls are designated on AJCA Official Performance Pedigrees and are also publicized through the Young Sire Availability Listing in Jersey Journal.
