If the test cards have printed correctly, you will see the numbers on the front of the page (e.g., 1, 2, 3) and the words on the other side of the page (e.g., bed, good, norf). Use the grey lines to cut out your test cards. If you are testing many children, you may like to laminate your test cards. You will need a copy of the Instruction sheet, Cover sheet, and Score sheet when you test a child. Once you have finished testing, you need to test each child s performance using the Scoring instructions and Norms tables. These can be found at the end of this pdf document. Sort the test cards into a single pile, numbered in order from and place in front of you on a table, numbered side up. 2. Ask the child to sit at the table, facing you. 3. Complete the child s details on front cover sheet. 4. Turn over the cover sheet to reveal the score sheet. Place in a clipboard if possible. 5. Say to the child: I am going to show you some cards with words printed on them. I would like you to read them out loud to me. Some of them are real words, that you will have seen before, but some of them are silly words, that are made up. Just do your best to read each one. The words get very hard at the end, so you probably won t be able to read all of them. That doesn t matter just read as many as you can. Are you ready? 6. Pick up card number 1 and show the test item to the child (with the colour and number facing you). Mark the child s response as correct or incorrect on the score sheet. If you wish, write their response if they make an error. 7. Continue presenting the cards one at a time, in numbered order, until the child makes 5 errors in a row in any colour. At that point, stop presenting the cards just in that colour by skipping over them in the pack, but continue presenting the cards in the other colours. For example, if the child gets 5 blue cards incorrect (irregular words), stop presenting blue cards but continue presenting red and yellow cards. 8. Continue in this manner, stopping testing in each colour once a child has made 5 errors in a row in that colour. 9. Testing is complete when all colours have been discontinued or when the child has read all the remaining items. 10. Count the total number correct (/40) for each colour and enter these scores into the spaces provided at the bottom of the score sheet and on the cover sheet.

89 Scoring instructions Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Example: Count the total number of correct items (/40) for each list and enter these scores into the spaces at the bottom of the score sheet. Go to the Norms tables and find the appropriate table for the child s age. The Norms tables are divided into 6-months age-bands (i.e., 6 years 0 months 6 years 5 months, 6 years 6 months 6 years 11 months). If the child is 6 years 8 months their age-band is 6 years 6 months 6 years 11 months. Look up the percentiles and z-scores corresponding to the child s total raw score for regular words, irregular words, and nonwords. If a child aged 8 years and 4 months has a total score of 10 for irregular words, find the raw score 10 in the table for children aged 8 years, 0 months - 8 years, 5 months, and read across the row to the columns that display the percentile and z-score for Irregular Words. What is a z-score? A z-score is a standard score with a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1. A z-score of 0 means average performance. A z-score from -1 to +1 is in the average range. A z-score from +1 to +2 is in the above-average range. A z-score above +2 is in the well-above-average range. A z-score from -2 to -1 is in the below-average range. A z-score below -2 is in the well-below-average range. What is a percentile? A percentile score indicates a child s rank in comparison to other children the same age. A percentile of 90 means that a child s score is better than 90% of scores of children the same age (i.e., a very good score). A percentile of 10 means that a child s score is better than 10% of scores of children the same age (i.e., a poor score). A percentile of 50 is average for age. So, a percentile of 50 means that a child s score is better than 50% of scores of children the same age (i.e., an average score).
