5 PREFACE AIP AUSTRALIA INTRO - 1 INTRODUCTION 1. PURPOSE. Designated Airspace Handbook is a publication issued on an alternating approximate 24/28 week cycle. The DAH lists, in tabular form, the lateral and vertical limits and other pertinent details of the airspace types listed in the table of contents. Further information is contained in AIP and MATS Chapter 2.4. The boundaries of Search and Rescue Areas can be found in AIP GEN 3.6. For ATC management purposes further information is contained in MATS Supplementary Procedures or Local Orders/Instructions. 2. CONDITION FOR RESTRICTED AREAS. An aircraft may only be flown in the airspace of a restricted area if the pilot in command has approval for the flight from the Controlling Authority mentioned for the restricted area. References to the Administering Authority are taken to be references to the Controlling Authority. 3. NOTAM. NOTAM are used to disseminate urgent changes to information contained in the DAH. Consult current NOTAM for latest information. 4. VERTICAL LIMITS / HOURS OF OPERATION Except when stated as AGL (above ground level), Lower and Upper vertical limits are promulgated as Above Mean Sea Level when at or below the Transition Altitude or as a flight level when above the Transition Altitude. SFC means the surface of the ground or water. NOTAM indicates that the vertical limits will be notified by NOTAM. The following code applies for Hours of Operation: AH AFTER HOURS D DAILY H24 CONTINUOUSLY E WEEKENDS (SAT & SUN) EXPH EXCLUDING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS HDS HOURS OF DAYLIGHT SAVING HJ SUNRISE TO SUNSET HN DURING HOURS OF DARKNESS JO MONDAY TO FRIDAY (EXC PUBLIC HOLIDAYS) JF SAT, SUN & PUBLIC HOLIDAYS MON, TUE, WED, THU, FRI, SAT, SUN DAYS OF THE WEEK W MONDAY TO FRIDAY WS MONDAY TO SATURDAY Z UNIVERSAL COORDINATED TIME L LOCAL TIME OT OTHER TIMES 5. Airspace descriptions will be preceded by a FIR identifier. These identifiers are as follows: Brisbane YBBB Melbourne YMMM 6. To reduce clutter, the following areas are not shown on Airservices charts because of: a. infrequent activation, or low level Oceanic area. b. the areas are wholly contained within Controlled Airspace. YBBB/R SAUMAREZ REEF 7. Under each FlR a restricted area number has been reserved for Air Defence Identification Zones (ADlZ) purposes. Procedures relating to the introduction of these Zones are contained in Flight Information Handbook Australia (FIHA). 8. Control areas are normally active continuously, but areas depicted may cease to be operative in certain circumstances. Areas identified by the word NOTAM may be activated or additional areas may be established to meet temporary requirements. These changes will be advised by NOTAM or specified on radio navigation charts, but pilots should plan their action on the basis that the depicted control areas are operative unless advised to the contrary. 9. In accordance with the provisions of CAR, aircraft operating in military CTR, whether active or deactivated, are not to use the surface of any military airfield unless specifically approved by the relevant military authority. 10. All CTR are active only during the hours of operation of the control tower. 11. Due to the possible variation of the hours of operation of civil and military towers, pilots should plan their operations on the basis that control zones are active unless advised to the contrary. 12. ADVICE OF ERRORS AND SUGGESTIONS: Correction and error advice is requested by the following three methods (in order of preference): a. Online at -correction-card/, or at docs.amend@airservicesaustralia.com or b. FAX: or c. 6 INTRO - 2 AIP AUSTRALIA PREFACE SPECIAL NOTICES The coordinates published in the Designated Airspace Handbook (DAH) conform to the following rules: the compass cardinal point is placed last; symbols are omitted; latitude is expressed as two digits for degrees, minutes and seconds (including where the value is less than 10); longitude is expressed using three digits for degrees (including where that value is less than 100 degrees) and two digits for minutes and seconds (including where the value is less than 10); one space is included between the degree/minute values and the minute/second values; one space is included between the latitude and longitude groupings; where a degree of accuracy of decimals of seconds is required, the decimal places are inserted immediately following the seconds digits and before the cardinal point (the number of decimal places is always consistent within the set); when two or more sets of coordinates are identified, each set is separated by a comma. Example Hundredths of a Second The most stringent ICAO accuracy requires some coordinates to be given in hundredths of a second. Thus, the delineation of five degrees, seven minutes and twenty-one point two-zero seconds South, sixtyfive degrees, twenty-five minutes and twenty-two point six-two seconds East will be presented as: S E. Tenth of a Second Should the above example be required to an accuracy of one tenth of a second, it will be presented as: S E. Seconds Should the above example be required to an accuracy of one second, it will be presented as: S E. Minutes Should the above example be required to an accuracy of one minute (i.e. 1NM) it will be presented as: 05 07S E. Exceptions to the above are the delineation of Certified or Registered Aerodromes Threshold Data (Section 17), IFR Waypoints (Section 21), Air Routes (Section 22) and Military Sensitive Areas (Section 23), where the latitudes/longitudes are expressed in the form required or where the cardinal point is placed first.
