1 City of Yokohama Press Release Yokohama Smart City Project (YSCP) Kicks Off! - A Week-long Demonstration & Exhibition Starts from November 7 th - YOKOHAMA, JAPAN Tuesday, November 2, 2010 The City of Yokohama will hold a demonstration and exhibition for the participants of APEC and media to coincide with the start of the APEC Leader s Week from the 7 th to the 14 th of November. This is the first step of the Yokohama Smart City Project (YSCP), which is a collaboration project between the City of Yokohama and private enterprises. With this exhibition, the City of Yokohama plans to explain in a simple way the smart city s spirit of innovation and comfort that YSCP is aiming to achieve and to appeal the City s overseas expansion possibilities in the future. 1 Accenture Japan Ltd., TOKYO GAS Co.,Ltd., The Tokyo Electric Power Company Inc., Toshiba Corporation, NISSAN MOTOR Co.,Ltd., Panasonic Corporation, Meidensha corporation etc. What is the Yokohama Smart City Project (YSCP)? The YSCP is the demonstrative project (FY ), implemented by the collaboration of the private enterprises and the City of Yokohama aiming for the new urban creation by a Japanese-model smart grid system, to significantly reduce CO 2 emissions and to achieve a dramatic introduction of renewable energy. The project has been selected as one of the Next-Generation Energy and Social Systems Demonstration Areas by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI). The YSCP is aiming to introduce the system in the existing downtown areas, where renewing the infrastructure is not made easy, by leveraging Yokohama s scale with 3.68 million citizens and diverse terrain. In Yokohama, there are urban central areas such as the Minato Mirai 21 district, Japan s leading port area, and the Kohoku-New Town, which is a large-scale development area, and the residential area where plenty of green and water resources are available. By assembling the local enterprises knowledge that is One-step away from the commercialization and by cultivating the sustainable social system in the city where citizens make a living, the City of Yokohama aims to work on establishing the smart city model ahead of the world and on developing the solution universally applicable to the cities overseas. Demonstration and Exhibition To provide a solution to the challenges of 21 st century, which are climate change mitigation and dependency on fossil fuels, the YSCP develops a comfortable eco-life style for citizens without any burden as well as a system in which the whole community can utilize the energy effectively. At the exhibition, each technological element of the YSCP is embedded in the model home where the visitors can image the real living space. The City of Yokohama will make the exhibition as visitor-friendly as possible so that the visitors would be able to hold great expectations for the future of the smart city by learning the outline of the smart city the YSCP provides, getting interested in the contents, and having real experiences of the smart city itself. 1
