3 What NEDO is doing in India As Japan s largest governmental organization promoting R&D and disseminating technology, NEDO has been carrying out demonstration projects under agreements with the Government of India. The main aim of the demonstration projects is to showcase Japan s advanced technology in India. NEDO s target areas for the demonstration projects are energy and environment. 10 projects have been successfully completed and 6 projects are ongoing. 3

6 1 Micro-Grid System with PV Power Generation The purpose of this project is to demonstrate a micro-grid system by using Japan s Energy Management System in Neemrana Industrial Park. The EMS monitors supply-demand of electricity for factories, controlling power supplies effectively from the grid, diesel generators and PV cells. 7 3 Smart Grid Pilot Project in Panipat The purpose of this project is to demonstrate Japan s smart grid technology and transfer operation knowledge and know-hows to UHBVN (Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam). The key features to be achieved in the project are To reduce AT&C loss (Project Start: 34%, Target: 15% ) To introduce peak load management and outage management To train UHBVN s employees to operate new systems properly Key Information Period: Cost: US$ 22 M MOU Signatories: DEA, MOP, UHBVN Tech Provider: Fuji Electric, Sumitomo Electric, TEPCO, Hitachi 7

11 Key to deploy Battery Energy Storage Unless appropriate incentives that reflect a correct economic value of batteries emerge, batteries will have a difficult time penetrating the electric system. By changing the market and regulatory environment, value of battery s services can be adequately remunerated.
