2 Background Several regions of the world are facing severe pressure on transmission line infrastructure, while the trends of the global energy system show a constant need for improving safety and quality of supply and an increasing impact of environmental issues. How to improve Transmission Systems? 27 April

3 Background When the construction of a new line is possible, the trend is to give priority to EHV and UHV Power Lines, both AC & DC, in order to reduce the losses, both of them with larger and increased number of multiple bundle conductors (6 or 8 bundle are pretty common on UHV). 27 April

4 Background When economic concerns and limitation on obtaining new right of ways for transmission line limit the growth of new lines, the solution is upgrade or replace the existing transmission line, mainly by reconductoring with use of new generation HTLS conductors, and in some case by using new design of towers. 27 April

5 The great expansion of EHV-UHV Lines A Smart Grid must be primarily a Strong Grid! STRONG GRIDS Electricity is not always used in the same place where it is produced need for transmission and distribution systems on long distance, but they involve significant energy loss. In order to reduce these losses, the recent trend of countries with the higher rate of energy development is to give priority to extra high and ultra high voltage power lines ( kv kv), many of which programmed to operate in direct current (DC). 8 Large Crossing Stringing Operations Large crossing means single span of km and above, as per large river crossing around the world, up to the fjord crossing, typical of Norway, in which the single span can be between 3 to 4 km. In correspondence of the large crossing, the bundle configuration of the line is sometimes shifted to a single conductor configuration, due to mechanical limits of the conductors and other environmental reason, bringing the conductor size up to 55 to 60 mm. 27 April

9 Stringing new generation HTLS conductors HTLS CONDUCTOR ACSS ACCR ACCC TACSR ZTACSR GTACSR GZTACSR ZTACIR 9 For new generation HTLS conductors the requirements from manufacturer for bull-wheels diameter are different depending on the kind of conductor typology; bull-wheel diameter move from 35 times to 40, 42 and also 45, while for blocks it moves from 20 to 26, 28 up to 31 or above. HTLS conductors are also very delicate on handling, due to the material selection, as soft annealed aluminum for outside layers and special alloy or composite core. They require care during stringing, in particular for the high fragility of the core under torsional loads. Bull-wheels material must avoid any over-stress of the conductor under stringing. 27 April

10 Stringing new generation HTLS conductors Hard bull-wheels surface is the optimal solution, because the low friction minimizes the torsional overstress and allow a smooth stringing operation preserving the conductor integrity. 12 Easy transportation of stringing equipment: Machines with DOT trailer Normally small or medium size machines, to be towed by regular vehicles or small trucks, as well as large machines, to be towed by dedicated trucks. 27 April

13 Easy transportation of stringing equipment: Detachable Helicopter Machines When the working area doesn t have any access road or doesn t have permission to made temporary road, the only solution is to fly the equipment by helicopter. Machines are made of detachable part with weight allowed for the specific helicopter to be used. 27 April

14 Easy transportation of stringing equipment: Detachable Modular Machines When the dimension of a machine will be larger than available traditional transportation resources, the equipments manufactures realized machines made by modular parts (normally operation unit and power unit); they are detachable machines not really for weight reason but mainly for dimension reasons. 27 April

15 Easy transportation of stringing equipment: Detachable Modular Machines The modular machine concept is based on the possibility to link a series of stringing machines, both at the puller or tensioner side, allowing the stringing of a large number of ropes or conductors. The machines on each operational side are linked in parallel and electronically connected and synchronized; however, they are operated by one operator from one main control. 27 April
