Meet Guido, a driverless robotic bar ready to mix-up a cocktail or two for urbanites anytime, anywhere. Think of it as the Uber of the bar world. 1/6

2 The concept is the brainchild of the Italian design and innovation house Carlo Ratti Associati who has worked with Makr Shakr, one of the global leaders in robotic bartenders, to help realize this project. In prototype stage at the moment, the plan is to develop the concept in the course of this year, in collaboration with various major cities, to offer a new on-the-go drink experience. The Guido bar unit is mounted over an autonomous vehicle platform, so that it can move independently on wheels using existing self-driving technology. A couple of mechanical arms serve as bartender, preparing any drink combination precisely to the recipe and in a matter of seconds. These days we can order almost anything on an app. Certainly in London where I live, most services are possible with a few clicks on the smartphone. Guido too can be accessed and ordered through an app to turn up to where you are and when you want - in theory anyway. All you have to do is order your favourite cocktail, the Martini of your choice for instance, the robotic bartender then sources the components from the bottles on the counter, turns up and crafts you your tailored mix. What's more, the system can verify your age through an ID scan and let you pay with your phone. 2/6

Guido is more than an experiment in combining new technologies and perfecting mixology. Carlo Ratti and Makr Shakr see this as an opportunity to re-imagine cities and form new possibilities for social interaction in otherwise neglected areas. Most major cities will have a few social hubs, leaving large areas generally empty at night and as a result soulless and possibly dangerous. Conceptually Guido will bring these areas to life so residents can enjoy their leisure time on their street rather than having to trek into town or drink solo at home. The creators feel it 3/6

A recent project saw a master-plan for an innovation district on the 2015 Expo Milano site to include streets and roads designed for a future of exclusively self-driving vehicles. Through the Senseable City Lab at MIT, a project directed by Ratti, the firm has carried out extensive research into the ways self-driving will alter the urban experience. The findings include designing Roboat, a self-driving vessel piloted on the Amsterdam canals to studying the impact of future shared mobility models. Guido is the application of a city-on-demand paradigm, says Emanuele Rossetti, Makr Shakr chief executive. By combining the robotic bartenders of her 4/6
