MODERN DAY ADVANCEMENTS IN GLOBAL RAILWAY TRANSPORTATION edition: 11 March 2014
edition: 10 February 2014 pg 01 Japan intends to outdo itself, rendering the sleek bullet train system that won it fame in the 1960s toward becoming so "yesterday." You can now look forward to the upcoming marvels of floating trains. The country known for its fast and efficient rail lines this month draws fresh attention after recently unveiling a magnetic levitation train that can travel at speeds over 310 mph (500km/h). eve of the Tokyo Olympics. But other countries have caught up. France and Germany developed high-speed trains that matched the Japanese speeds. China has built a high-speed network that surpasses Japan s in its reach if not quite its speed. China's Shanghai Transrapid has been blasting riders to Pudong airport since 2004, and once achieved a top speed of 501km/h (311 mph). The country is also constructing a 1000km/h vacuum-based train that it plans to launch within the next few years. Japan is looking beyond its bullet train system as rail developers seek to excel globally once again, by offering a nextgeneration, no-wheels maglev (magnetic levitation) system. The maglev trains are frictionless, faster and are quieter than trains that use wheels. In 2027, the new trains will connect Tokyo and Nagoya and will travel at about 311 mph. It takes 90 minutes for a conventional, speedy bullet train to complete the journey between the two stations but the new train would complete the same trip in 40 minutes. Japan has long been a pioneer in highspeed rail. It introduced bullet trains, or Shinkansen, to the world in 1964, on the
edition: 10 February 2014 pg 02 To stake its claim to leadership in a new generation of faster technology, Japan plans to begin construction of its first intercity maglev line next year, linking Tokyo with Nagoya and, eventually, Osaka. In tests, the Japanese maglev has reached speeds up to 580 kilometers an hour, or 360 m.p.h., the world record for a train with disabilities. The Japanese government has promised to lend the United States half of the cost of building the first "Super-Maglev" train, reducing travel time between Baltimore and Washington DC to just 15 minutes. Tokyo is so keen to show off its technology that it will provide loans for half the estimated $8 billion ( 5bn) cost of installing the tracks, Japan's Asahi newspaper said on Tuesday. The American federal government is keen on the project, according to Central Japan Railway Co., and state authorities are especially enthusiastic. "The national government has shown interest, a source at the company said. But a number of the states in the northeast corridor such as Maryland are particularly keen for faster rail links and more advanced technology. The 37-mile journey between Washington DC and Baltimore presently takes one hour by conventional rail link, and the Japanese government and Central Japan Railway Co. hope to use the project to showcase what it believes will be the transportation technology of the future.three elements stadium, arena and performing arts complex are developed as a family of forms that sit on a raised ground, with the park flowing around. Not only will this striking development raise the profile of Natal nationally and internationally, the
edition: 10 February 2014 pg 03 THE PROPOSED LAGOS RAILWAY SYSTEM The idea of developing rapid transit in Lagos dates from the 1980s with the Lagos Metroline network conceived by the Alhaji Lateef Jakande during the Nigerian Second Republic. The initial Metroline project was scrapped in 1985 by Muhammadu Buhari at a loss of over $78 million to the Lagos tax payers. The idea of developing a light rail network for Lagos was revived by Governor Bola Tinubu in the early 2000s with a formal announcement of its construction in December This initial $135 million proposal was part of the greater Lagos Urban Transportation Project to be implemented by the newly formed Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). [The Blue Line is now being built by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. The Blue Line will run 27.5 km from Marina to Okokomaiko, with 13 stations. End-toend journey time will be approximately 35 minutes. It is being built as a high capacity, electrically powered rail mass transit system. Most of the route will be on the surface, running east-west, in the central reservation of the rebuilt Badagry Expressway between Igbo-Elerin Road (Okokomaiko) and Iganmu. The line will run on elevated structure from Iganmu along the south side of the expressway passing the junction with Eric Moore Road, crossing just south of the National Theatre to Iddo, then south to Lagos Island with a terminal at Marina. Construction is underway between National Theatre and Mile 2. A Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF) will be constructed at Okokomaiko, with a track connection from the Blue Line to the depot. The entire Blue Line will operate over a secure and exclusive right-of-way,
edition: 10 February 2014 pg 04 with no level crossings and no uncontrolled access by pedestrians or vehicles. Eko Rail hopes the final section will follow on quickly, especially as it already has the cars. In the meantime, it expects commuters will change to express buses shuttling from National theatre to Lagos Island and running further to the new business districts on Victoria Island. Eko Rail looks forward to delivering a worldclass service to support Lagos s development as a global megacity.
edition: 10 February 2014 pg 05 GENERAL KNOWLEDGE TIPS ON HOW TO HANDLE WORK PLACE CONFLICT TEN TIPS FOR CREATING RESPECT AND CIVILITY. If each employee develops an awareness of respectful behaviors and necessary skills, it is anticipated that employees will serve as role models and that these behaviors will spread in the workplace and beyond. The following are ten tips to assist you in accomplishing this objective: 1. Before acting, consider the impact of your words and actions on others. 2. Create an inclusive work environment. 3. Self-monitor the respect that you display in all areas of your communications. 4. Understand your triggers or hot buttons. 5. Take responsibility for your actions and practice self-restraint and anger management skills in responding to potential conflicts. 6. Adopt a positive and solution-driven approach in resolving conflicts. 7. Rely on facts rather than assumptions. 8. Include others in your focus by considering their needs. 9. View today s difficult situations from a broader (big picture) and more realistic perspective. 10. "Each one influence one by becoming a bridge builder and role model for civility and respect.
