2 Automatic Supply Restoration (ASR) systems operate in two ways: Protection based systems that handle a fault in real time. Post fault restoration systems that deal with a fault after power has been lost. Schneider Electric Advanced Services Rail signal power solutions V4 2

4 Our history with post fault ASR systems We have been working with electricity supply companies since the 1990 s. Most 33kV & 11kV networks in developed countries use some form of Post Fault restoration. 6 Automatic Supply Restoration: Stage 1 The infeed and outfeed currents are continuously monitored at each FSP by Fault Passage Recorder (FPR) units 16A 16A 13A 13A 8A 8A Automatic Supply Restoration 17A 6A 6A 0A Signals on with healthy supply A near short circuit fault occurs between FSP3 & FSP4. The fault presents itself as a 55A current imbalance. 7 Automatic Supply Restoration: Stage 2 Within ~50ms, the fault causes the circuit breaker at PSP 1 to trip Fault Tripped The ASR locates the faulty section from the current readings stored by the FPRs at the time of the fault occurrence. It then isolates the faulty section by opening the contactors immediately upstream and downstream. Fault is now isolated Tripped Schneider Electric Advanced Services Rail signal power solutions V4 7

8 Automatic Supply Restoration: Stage 3 The ASR then resets and closes the circuit breaker in PSP1 And finally the ASR closes the normally open circuit breaker in PSP2. All signals are now restored to supply. Schneider Electric Advanced Services Rail signal power solutions V4 8

Commissioning no track side settings plug & play can be commissioned from the feeder s PSP or remotely No design change whenever the number of FSPs is changed. You can deploy the system at phase 1 of your project. No tripping elements along the feeder so you can optimize your PSP protection settings to suit your design. Easy to operate & easy to understand for the maintainer. Can be maintained in-house. When a fault occurs, the system identifies all of the L1 & L2 faults, so preventative maintenance can be undertaken High availability and reliability No risk of nuisance trip, because there are no tripping elements in the system. The system does not need high speed, low latency communications, and thus is able to operate using Network Rail s FTN network as a diverse communications route. Lower lifetime cost, standard components, no asset register of settings, low spares holding. All the ASR equipment fitted in the FSPs are identical, and can be easily swapped no specialist skills are required to set up the replacement equipment. No threshold settings are required, no effect from points heating machine inrush or traction power surges. The system never operates until AFTER the power is lost.
