2 SMART GRIDS WEEK I BREGENZ 2012 Introduction Doris Bures, Federal Minister Dear Sir or Madam! The aim of technology policy is to develop the technological basis in order to secure a safe, climate-friendly and affordable power supply for the future, together with industry, researchers and other strategic partners. For some years now, the development of our electric power systems has therefore been right at the top of the European agenda. Globally, too, great efforts are being made, above all to make this important infrastructure capable of handling a steadily growing share of renewable energy, in particular from fluctuating sources. Smart grids are aimed at supporting both traditional and new energy services efficiently in the future. More and more people want to play an active role in the power supply, and we are pinning high hopes on efficient, low-carbon electric vehicles. s innovative companies and research institutes are dedicated to help drive this development. The Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) acts as a partner to them, helping the process to move forward and supporting n initiatives with its entire funding portfolio. Started by BMVIT, the Smart Grids Week contributes to the debate within on this issue. In addition, the event has also become a globally perceived platform for exchange in international cooperation. I am delighted that illwerke vkw and the Province of Vorarlberg are helping to support this year s event and are actively involved as cooperation partners. What we can look forward to in particular are the results of the smart grids demonet project in Grosses Walsertal, which can also be viewed during the event. Doris Bures Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology, Introduction illwerke vkw Smart grids: the basis of energy autonomy. The Province of Vorarlberg s goal of achieving energy autonomy by 2050 has a huge impact on illwerke vkw s strategy and dayto-day work as the largest energy service company in the region. We advise our customers on how they can reduce their power consumption, we invest in new technologies such as electric vehicles and we rise to the challenge when it comes to developing renewable energy sources. There are various pillars of energy autonomy, but they are all based on smart grids that meet the technical challenges of distributed electricity generation and smart control of consumer loads, thus continuing to guarantee security of supply. With our demonstration smart grid in the Grosses Walsertal Biosphere Reserve we will gain initial experience and test innovative approaches to solutions in the field. It is all the more gratifying for us that this year s Smart Grids Week is being held in Vorarlberg and that we can also welcome international experts to the workshops here. We hope that you will feel at home here and find the appropriate environment to address the central issue of smart grids with a view to development at different levels. Dr. Ludwig Summer CEO, illwerke vkw (f.l.t.r.) Dr. Christof Germann Member oft he Board, illwerke vkw 2 Smart Grids Week I Bregenz 2012
