Sensory Laboratory at Brno Exhibition Centre Case Study - Day 1 OVERVIEW The solution we propose is built around the Seven Principles of Smart City Brno. Starting with openness, effectiveness, modularity, and diversity in mind, we have designed a four step development plan for developing the Sensory Laboratory, trying to minimize the initial costs and use the available resources as much as we could. We have also analysed the strategic partnerships to be created with companies and institutions in Brno and whole South Moravian region. Moreover, we designed a plan based on cleverness, crowdsourcing, and startup involvement, using knowledge, data gathered throughout research, and consultancy services as the main mean of generating revenue. CONCEPT After dozens of minutes of brainstorming on how to standardise our concept in a responsible way, we ve reached the conclusion that responsible people make use of what they already have. Starting from the existing power, water and air infrastructure the BVV has, we have deployed the Early Stage, also known as Phase One: market research (via crowd sourcing), a dashboard for interconnecting the citizens, the City Hall, the BVV, and the businesses, adapting the infrastructure to the designed standards, and setting up an IoT Wireless Communication System (LoRaWAN Server - LoRaWAN is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) specification intended for wireless battery operated Things in a regional, national or global network. LoRaWAN targets key requirements of Internet of Things such as secure bi-directional communication, mobility and localization services. ) In Phase Two, we took space usage into consideration - we will start by using only one hall, the Pavilion H that is rarely used for exhibition - so we can use as the first building from BVV which will transform to Lab. The entire infrastructure of the BVV used for fairs will be like a little City Simulator (it has roads, its own electrical grid, a bank, a hospital, a post - just like a real miniature city!), from where we can get real-time data for our Sensor Laboratory. After analyzing the results and seeing if it s worth it, we will build the second building in our Lab Suite on a parking spot (so we say) inefficiently used (see presentation for picture). That building will be designed to develop Test Facilities, with ultimate technology from companies that come and test their products. Also, we still need the parking, so the building will have underground parking. In the meantime, the BVV facilities will be adapted according to the data resulted in the crowd-sourcing process. 1
In Phase Three, the whole Exhibition Center is now adapted and we have already moved throughout it. The BVV also has some halls where they deposit unused materials and other miscellaneous things (temporary halls that were supposed to be demolished a looooong time ago), so in the n ear future all of them will be demolished and another storage facility, way better structured, will be built for this purpose. At this moment of time, we carry out the Beta Programme: basically, we bring in two start-ups previously incubated by STARCUBE - we are talking about Dronee (open source drones) and Tap4Parking (smart car camera for parking). This way, we empower Czech start-ups and benefit from their technology. The deal is that we provide the means and they provide the tech, which then they leave behind for us to use for future testing facilities. Thus we are sustaining Openness, and also we become Effective, by becoming able to sell technology or consultancy services to other cities wanting to become Smart Cities. Phase Four is more of an utopic phase, in which we eventually get the money we need to interconnect BVV to the tram public transportation system, in order to extend the testing capabilities of the laboratory, and get the Smart City Simulator closer to reality. LAB ORGANISATION Administration The Sensory Laboratory would be in the administration of BVV Veletrhy Brno and Brno University of Technology. Further shares selling is possible in order to raise money for laboratory extensions in stages 3 and 4. Economy The first investments into the venue would be made by BUT and BVV, in order to implement the first stage of the programme. In the early stage technology for event optimisation, data, and knowledge would be provided to BVV by our Laboratory, in exchange of testing space and infrastructure. The infrastructure, data and knowledge, would be sold to companies willing to test their sensors and Smart City Solutions. Moreover, we would be accepting payments in technology to be used by BVV. Technology The main aspect we had in mind regarding the technology is the transformation and standardising of already existing fair infrastructure. Power cable, media, and compressed air channels from outdoor spaces, tram and train rails, streets and pathways, BVV s own power substation, and BVV s television and radio station would be transformed into an flexible, and modular outdoor laboratory, where companies and innovators could easily install and interconnect their sensors, temporarily or permanently.. For such thing to be accomplished, we would start with a crowdsourcing campaign held among the big players in the Czech industry, in order to design de standards to be used in our facility. During peak periods, when large numbers of people attend the fairs regularly organized by BVV, companies having already functioning sensors installed, would receive live data, paying a rent for the infrastructure installed, and for the API access. Also BVV would benefit from crowd dynamics information, power consumption optimization data, waste management strategies, during big events. 2
During calm summer months, the streets of BVV would become a large testing ground for clients who develop the sensors, and who are willing to test prototypes such as autonomous cars, self driving trams/buses, smart traffic lights or even smart lighting systems. For the companies willing to conduct research programmes that require indoor facilities, we are planning to provide them at first the least used building, (H building). After organic growth of the laboratory, a Development center is planned to be built in the marked area, being dedicated to research purposes only. LAB USAGE In our laboratory we will be able to test the following: Power consumption optimisation (smart lighting on the streets, adaptive light systems inside halls, connection of the power substation to a future developed BRNO smart grid); Heating system optimisation (cooling system for smart houses, heating systems for large halls); Traffic optimisation & Crowd Movement optimisation (smart traffic lights mounted and tested inside BVV venue, bluetooth beacons for asset tracking during large expositions, crowd movement tracking using webcams); Autonomous vehicles (city behaviour simulation for self driving cars, trams or trucks - a course designed on BVV streets, with obstacles that could be found in a regular city); Sound pollution monitoring (sound sensors installed in street lights, in order to develop a sound propagation map inside BVV -> sound systems placement optimisation); Waste management (recycle bins with level sensors that will call the garbage disposal trucks only when they are full - the solution could be extended in the whole Brno city); Public transport testing (link the BVV internal railways with the tram depot nearby, in order to test self driving trams, smart bus stops testing ground, regenerative brakes for trams, etc); Pollution levels (install LoRaWan based sensors that could collect pollution data while various BVV events take place) Smart parking spot finders (LoRaWAN based presence sensors, mounted onto the parking spots, in order to create a live map of available parking spots. The map could be provided to fair attendees in order to reduce traffic caused by trying to find a parking spot) Two floors modular carparks CANDIDATES The possible partners that could be involved into the development of the lab are the following: BUT (Brno University of Technology) - one of the best universities of the world for several years in succession, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds Limited (QS) prestigious world rankings; GENERAL ELECTRIC - an American multinational conglomerate which powers the world with the cleanest, most advanced technologies and energy solutions. It is also already in partnership with BUT ; JIC STARCUBE - a Czech startup accelerator; SIEMENS - a global powerhouse focusing on the areas of electrification, automation and digitalization. One of the world s largest producers of energy-efficient, resource-saving technologies; 3
VALEO - a world-leading global automotive supplier operating in 30 countries and partnering with automakers worldwide FAB LAB - small-scale workshop offering (personal) digital fabrication; MONEY, MONEY, MONEY! When it comes to a project this big, the most essential ingredient for a recipe of success is...money! Since the City Hall is the 100% stakeholder of the BVV Trade Fair Center, we have decided to (at least) seek funding from Brno s City Hall. Also, since Brno is such a developed city, accessing European Funds might as well work for our financing goal. As we consider this project to be a feasible one, additional income might come from the early stages of the project, making it possible to carry on with it based on actual earnings. The revenue from the early bookings and rental of BVV facilities could be just perfect! Concerning the early stage - standardisation of the technology and the IoT Wireless Communication setup - the costs may rise up to euros (tops)- a LoRaWAN server s cost is not very high. RISK ASSESSMENT In order to find out how to carry out our business plan, we needed to make an analysis of every important step in it. Thus, we have outlined our strongest points, along with our opportunities, but also weaknesses and threats in the following SWOT Analysis: Strengths Smart City supportive Using simplicity as the new complicated - already existed tech Modularity makes it easily moveable Scalability Addresses a high range of businesses BVV can provide organisational materials (carpets, refrigerators, chairs etc.) Existing outside and inside fairs infrastructure Opportunities Can extend Empowering Local Start-ups Lower BVV operational costs Creation of new jobs Weaknesses The same building might not be available exactly when needed Some buildings are not multi-purpose Might cause lack of phonic comfort at times (but can be compensated) Threats Overcrowding of the facility at main events 4
TIMELINE It s common knowledge that these types of projects take a lot of actual time to be brought to life. Here is how our timeline should look like, represented by a simplified Gantt diagram: :(: You decide 5
