3 1.Introduction This guide was compiled to assist newcomers to the RC hobby with the Thunder Power TP-610C charger. It lists step by step instructions to charge LiPo, NiCd and NiMh packs. This guide is not meant to be comprehensive, refer to the manufacturer's manual for detailed operating instructions. Use at your own risk, the author shall not be made responsible for loss, damage or liability resulting in the use of this guide. The author has no affiliation with Thunder Power. Thunder Power is a registered trademark of Thunder Power RC CAUTION Always plug in banana jacks to the charger output prior to connecting you pack to an adapter. Always disconnect your pack from an adapter prior to disconnecting the adapter (banana plugs) from the charger output. 4 2.System Features and Specifications See 3.Buttons and menu navigation The SEL/MODE button and ENT/STOP button can be used 2 ways: short press and long press (more than 2 seconds). ENT/STOP is used to move from one field to another when setting charge rates and pack configuration. SEL/MODE is used to change menus. INC/DEC is used to change values or to change screens when displaying balancer information. 4.LiPo quick start Plug-in charger to a stable power source (12VDC power supply, deep cycle battery, etc...) (a) Select LiPo mode i. If LiPo is not displayed, hold down SEL/MODE for more than 2 seconds 8 April Draft 3 Marc Archambault

5 If not this LiPo CHARGE [Sel] 3sPACK C=2.10A then go here BATTERY TYPE NiCd ii. Use the INC/DEC buttons to select LiPo iii. Press SEL/MODE repeatedly until you can confirm the LiPo charge option LiPo CHG Option 100% Charge iv. Press the INC/DEC buttons to select 100% v. Ensure system timeout is set to at least 2 hours. This is the maximum time a charge cycle can run for SYSTEM TIMEOUT MAX TIME: 3Hour vi. Hold down the SEL/MODE button for more than 2 seconds to return to the LiPo charging menu (b) To create a memory i. Press INC/DEC to select a memory slot (1 to 25) LiPo CHARGE[M12] 2sPACK C= 0.55A ii. Press ENT/STOP to select the number of cells (1s to 6s) iii. Press ENT/STOP to select the charge rate (0.25A to 8.00A) iv. Press no buttons for 5 seconds to save your settings 8 April Draft 4 Marc Archambault

Never charge a pack at twice it's capacity (2100mah pack charged at 4.2Amps) unless the manufacturer recommends it. (c) To work in normal mode (no memories) i. At the initial screen, when [Sel] is flashing, press ENT/STOP ii. You can now simply select a cell configuration and charge rate without modifying a memory preset iii. To return to memory mode, either unplug the charger or start/stop a charge (d) Charging i. Connect the LiPo pack to the balancing board and to the charger output. 8 April Draft 5 Marc Archambault

7 ii. From the LiPo charge menu, hold down the ENT/STOP button for 2 seconds. (e) During LiPo charging i. Verify charge option / input voltage: press SEL/MODE ii. View balancer data: Hold SEL/MODE for 2 seconds, press INC/DEC to change balancer page. Hold SEL/MODE for 2 seconds to return to the main charging page iii. Change charge rate: pres INC/DEC to increase or decrease the charge rate (can be increased up to 125% of the initial setting iv. Stop the charging process: press ENT/STOP v. The charger will beep and the top left of the screen will alternate as follows when the charge is complete (F-- CG) F V 0.00A 01958mah 1:05:34 CG V 0.00A 01958mah 1:05:34 5.NiCd / NiMh quick start Charging NiCd and NiMh cells on the TP-610C is similar, both modes use autocell detection (V=auto). Ensure you use the right mode for the right battery type, as the charge termination process (delta-v) is different. (a) Select NiCd/NiMh mode i. If NiCd/NiMh is not displayed, hold down SEL/MODE for more than 2 seconds If not this NiMh CHARGE [Sel] V=Auto C=0.50A then go here BATTERY TYPE LiPo ii. Use the INC/DEC buttons to select NiCd/NiMh iii. Press SEL/MODE repeatedly until you can confirm the NiCd/NiMh Delta- V setting Delta-V Setting NiMh 5mV Delta-V Setting NiCd 10mV 8 April Draft 6 Marc Archambault

8 iv. Press the INC/DEC buttons to select the appropriate value (2 to 12 mv), the default is 5mV. A low value may not completely charge the pack. A high value may overheat some cells in the pack. v. Ensure the charging timeout is set for 3 hours or more if charging at ½ pack capacity SYSTEM TIMEOUT MAX TIME: 3Hour vi. Hold down the SEL/MODE button for more than 2 seconds to return to the NiCd / NiMh charging menu (b) Create a memory i. See LiPo quick start / Create a memory for button function ii. Only the charge rate can be set for NiMh / NiCd iii. C refers to the charge rate, not the capacity of the cells iv. 9 CAUTION Never charge NiMh packs at very low rates (less than 1/10 pack capacity). Charging a NiMh very slowly may prevent the charger from detecting the delta-v. CAUTION Never charge NiMh/NiCd packs at very fast rates (1 x pack capacity, charge 1500 pack at 1.5A). Charging a NiMh/NiCd without temperature monitoring at high rates can cause permanent damage to the pack. (c) Charging i. Connect the NiCd/NiMh pack to the charger output. ii. From the NiCd/NiMh charge menu, hold down the ENT/STOP button for 2 seconds. (d) During NiCd/NiMh charging i. Verify charge option / input voltage: press SEL/MODE ii. Change charge rate: pres INC/DEC to increase or decrease the charge rate (can be increased up to 125% of the initial setting iii. Stop the charging process: press ENT/STOP iv. 10 6.Charger options Option Applies to Description Delta-V Setting NiMh / NiCd A low delta-v leads to an early charge termination, a high delta-v leads to a late charge termination. If the pack is very hot at the end of the charge cycle, use a lower value. If the pack is under charged or completely cooled at the end of the charge cycle, increase the delta-v. Beeper Option All Turns on/off the key press, balancer and end of charge tones. Input Pwr Option LVC System Timeout Max Time All Charging Low voltage cutoff. If the input voltage drops below the specified value, the charger will shut down. The maximum time a charge cycle can operate. Applies to each charge cycle when cycling cells, not to the overall cycle program. Cycle Data NiMh / NiCd Use the INC/DEC button to review cycling data from previous cycling. LiPo CHG Option LiPo The charge end state for LiPo batteries 100% Full charge 95% Useful for flying in winter (temp below 0 degree C) 50% LiPo storage mode FAST Reduces balancing time at the end of the charge cycle LiPo Dchg Option CUT OFF Li/A1 InitCharge TimeOut LiPo LiPo / A123 Voltage of each cell at the end of a discharge cycle. Maximum time to initialize the charge. Applies mostly to very discharged packs (less than 3v) or out of balance packs Pb charge topoff Pb Maximum charge voltage per cell for Pb batteries. 12 7. Accessories Thunder power manufactures a few accessories you may find useful. Part No Image Description TP6P4E 6 pin to 4 pin adapter. Used to for charging 2 3S packs in series as a single 6S pack. Thunder Power The balancing tap of the second pack connects to the TP 6S plug on the board.
